That is a very dignified retort and I cannot say anything to that. But in this context though, I do not think Gavaskar was out of line. All the nasty comments on him are uncalled for, but such is life. In his defense, Gavaskar is a very articulate and well-read person - all the nasty comments about him not withstanding. Perhaps it is little known, but in a sport that did not pay much at the time he played, he was the first sports millionaire in India.
For all their protestations about being abused, the current Indian team are the very worst for it themselves. Classic case of dishing it out but not being able to take it when it comes back at you.

I don't think it was a bad decision at all. Gavaskar looked late clamping down on an off cutter that stayed low. You can't blame the umpire for giving it out. If they took the word of every batsman who was waving their bat around as if to say "I got an edge on that" then no one would be given out LBW would they.
any international cricketers who have played Australians in Australia, know what abusive words they used to upset the batsmen. THis is all done to unnerve them and win matches.

Plus i was on 2 and faced a good number of balls and was getting settled. Broke a bat myself, but you dont boycott the whole team

@mcnesta80 I sure hope Dennis Lillee feared and respected his parents. Would have liked to know how he addressed them - probably with the same set of expletives he used on opposition players? But I do understand the context in which this issue happened. Despite all the negativity - these incidents, Gavaskar walking off, Miandad raising his bat and Ranatunga taking his team off, are all miniature contributions to leveling the playing field. Asians are typically not nasty on the field.

@ajay1124 Some of the young Indians are ready to get nasty, and I love it to tell you the truth. But there is a line. Calling the opposition a cunt is fine, but not the umpire (or your parents). Racism (or any other kind of discrimination) is out of bounds. The funnier it is, the more acceptable. You can sledge hard and play fair at the same time. I might be giving a batsman a mouthful, but if he hits a cover drive on the rise for four I'll clap. Search Merv Miandad...that's how you sledge.

I don't think it was a bad decision at all. Gavaskar looked late clamping down on an off cutter that stayed low. You can't blame the umpire for giving it out. If they took the word of every batsman who was waving their bat around as if to say "I got an edge on that" then no one would be given out LBW would they.

any international cricketers who have played Australians in Australia, know what abusive words they used to upset the batsmen. THis is all done to unnerve them and win matches.
Sunil Gavaskar, took is partner off the field coz. some of the Aussie fielders used abusive words.

what a disgrace, i mean, i had a worser decision, where my bat was never near the ball, and it flicked my thoigh pad, went through to the keeper, then they appealed. I looked in amusement but then cheers rang around as i saw a finger go up. My laughter went to anger as i said it clearly flicked my thigh pad. Plus i was on 2 and faced a good number of balls and was getting settled. Broke a bat myself, but you dont boycott the whole team
