Chopin is the most amazing Pionist ever he will be remembered always as the poet of the piano his works are remembered even today by many people around the world if only we all had the chance to say thank to him for giveing us the gift of his works and showing us there are no limitations of the human soul and the wonders much like his work can bring to the world.

about 70% into the video Schiff says it used to be forbidden to use the thumbs on the black keys...how the fuck do you play without using your thumbs on the black keys...did mozart or beethoven encounter those problems? i found that incredible...to whoever invested that rule should i hope he rots in hell
you people are idiots, i'm quoting what Schiff said, and I agree with him that its a bewildering statement and Chopin came along and decided to use the Thumbs. which is what we all do today

"There are sentimental elements in Chopin's life but... no element of sentimentality in his music" - say what? only because he said that, I'm not going to watch the rest of it, what an ignorant imbecile, obviously he doesn't understand Chopin, and looks only at the notes, and not at his life. I'm outrageg about his words. Read history man- Chopin's music is mostly about sentiment....sentiment to his homeland which is Poland, and he was "banished" from it (not literally, but you could say that).
schiff looked only at the notes? well if you had seen the rest of the documentary you would have found that schiff in fact talks about the entirety of chopin's life.
i don't think he meant "sentimentality" in the same vein as you described. in fact in this video he reveals how chopin himself describes his music, ie with the polish word "jal".
what he meant by "sentimentality" would perhaps be to describe elements contained in the music of the other romantics of chopin's era.
chopin, as we now know, did not consider himself a romantic. he meant for his music to be played with the same purity and the same vein as bach and mozart, who were the only two composers he truly admired.
Chopin is great. His music is adorable! Charming! Inspired!
I also like schiff very much. He reminds me of Gould in many ways. His playing is very clear personal and soulful. When he plays, just like Gould, he is totally absorbed in the music. As a result the quality of his sound is incredible. I luv it =)
Schiff is a very good pianist who's terrible at documentaries. Not good.

Sentimentality in Romantic music is more 'excess'. Certainly Chopin's music is very emotional, but it is NOT excessive.
Haeronthegreat 2 years ago
I think he meant that there was no insincere emotions in his music.
