  • Am I the only lost or stupid soul that can't find part 13?

  • Watching the rest of them sing whilst Charlie just stares forward blankly at 7:10 just breaks my heart.

  • I am really shocked having watched it. Now I just don't know if I am too hard on my two sons or not. Sometimes I have to be hard on them because I think I am saving them from future troubles by doing so, but then later I often get a feeling that I was too much. And where is that fine line between being wisely strict and wisely gracious? It's so hard to see it.

  • Why didn't Neil hire a lawyer and emancipate himself? His father is rich, so he can afford a lawyer! I actually wanted to kill Neil's dad. He cost his son his life, he cost some students a best friend and also cost a teacher his job.

  • @Cinemadman Neil's dad isn't really rich. He just had to give his all to acquire such a living standard, and actually he invests most of his money into his son

  • haha i was half hoping for mr perrt to shout i will shove my foot up your ass

  • Fuck authority of any kind before it fucks you...

  • When I watched this in class I didn't cry at all, I was still sad but this is the first time I cried.

  • hahahah keep pressing 5 for "NO!"

  • :((((

  • Keating was more of a father to Neil than his father ever was until his son shot himself in the head

  • 2:55 that's what she said

  • OMG I'm crying this is so sad!!

  • the message and point of this film and art in general: live your life, look at what happens if you don't! Recognize the pattern and step beyond it!

Don't let this, or similar things happen to you or your friends.

    Be honest.

    How tragic <_<

  • @hezkyden Who decides what is best for an individual sentient being? Enforcing specific careers and goals is oppressive and destructive to the psyche of an impressionable adventurous mind. Life is not about obtaining hoards of cash becoming a PHD. It is about living in the moment, empathy, compassion and exploring the wondrous nature of existence. This is the prevailing spirit of the upcoming generations. The mentality you display towards this situation is fading along with the past generation.

  • @hezkyden he took away his sons joy, his freedom, his identity, so Neil made the only decision that was able to make himself

Don't let your kids talk, yell at them if they do something that isn't in your life plan for them and see how well it goes

  • @hezkyden A little heavy handed - his son just scored himself a headshot. And how was he right about what was best either? It takes a little more than a pet peeve to actualy kill yourself. It takes time to form the will to die. And only a mature mind can make such a decision. His father clearly doesnt know his son. And it is strange how such a mature old man couldnt put 1 and 1 together seeing as to what length Neil has went to defy him.

  • @hezkyden And if he couldnt see what he has done and to what lengths is he ready to go for that one goal, with all of his mental maturity and wisdom? Then how can this man be called a father ? Keating has no possible blame - he didnt encourage Neil to defy his father - he encouraged him to talk openly with him which i cant imagine he can be prosecuted because of.

  • Comment removed

  • Regardless of what his father wanted him to do, he could have defied him and followed his dream as an actor, shooting himself was a little extensive

  • @GetSqueaky this boy was a very sensitive character.....but i guess you have a point too!!!!!!!

  • @GetSqueaky Thats exactly what I keep telling myself...

  • @GetSqueaky What? Ungrateful?

    I don't get you.

  • @DKgirl94 yyeah.. hes got a good life, goes to a prestigious school and he clearly doesnt take that into appreciation when he decides to kill himself over that decision.

  • 7:30 what a terrible choir!! they shouldn't have been singing... :(

  • not long before a dog pissed in that snow :)... damn editing of movies they took that part out

  • Hi, I'm upset cause my friend died. I just threw up. Shove snow in my mouth please, that will help!

  • why the heck would he do something as pathetic as kill himself!?!?! Im well disappointed after all the strength he showed previously and encouraged in others.

  • @FMLdoodez because he was being forced to go to a military school instead of being able to live a life that he actually enjoyed, his abusive father had already decided his son's future

  • I'm pathetic cause I bawled like a baby lol glad I decided to watch it at home before watching the rest at school. This was an amazing movie

  • Its truly incredible what film makers can create in the viewers mind, really, none of us saw more than a bundle, and heard nothing but Neil's father waking up. Seeing once more nothing more than the gun and the hand, and heard his parents horrified reaction, yet everyone watching this movie saw Neil hold the gun to his head and heard a deafening shot ring out, and saw him lying in his blood on the carpet.

  • Look at 02:32. What is that, hovering above the desk on the right side of the screen?

  • @DragonStyler3117 it's smoke from the gun. his father smelled it immediately after that scene.

  • That's just too intense ffs.

  • i'm in teary eyes..T.T

  • no parents deserve to loose their son, no friends deserve to loose their best friend, but no human being deserves not being able to do what he wants to do in life....

  • @dancepasion1818 what about Hitler?

  • headshot 100XP

  • @husnain404 You're one insensitive son of a bitch. i don't care if it's just a movie. Shit like this really happens.

  • @husnain404 "Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."

That sir is my advise to you!

  • @husnain404 I wish to you that you'll never experience the pain nessecary to hate your self for saying that...!

  • Tuvan throat singers... you can't beat em for this kind of work.

  • Neil should have run away and gone straight to Mr Keating. This breaks my heart.

  • Neil is actually Hugh Laurie in disguise (a doctor and an actor).

    ....directed by M. Night Shyamalan

  • People totally don't get the message of this movie. So many people are all "Neil is so stupid for committing suicide, why didn't he just do what he wanted to do?". Throughout the whole film we see Neil desperately trying to do what he wants to do, and it just gets him in further shit with his Dad. 10 years at military school?? Imagine 10 years of hating life every day. Of course he shot himself rather than face that, and it definitely doesn't make him weak or less of a member of the DPS.

  • @mcollie1234 He could have shot his dad instead ... then again Im probably missing the point too. I see no point in suicide, far better to destroy what is in your way then destroy your self agonizing over it.

  • red fucking forman

  • Neil's Dad never accepted responsibility for what he did to his son. Just sad.

  • Whatever it is... dude it's just stupid to kill yourself.. just run away or something. Well, it's a movie anyway.

  • WHY DIDN'T HE JUST RUN AWAY AND BECOME AN ACTOR??! :S

  • He's not alright...

  • ...i didn't get a chance at harvard 'cause i was enrolled at huntsville state penitentiary...tough conditions are very relative...there was no reason for the suicide

  • @jethro035181 i disagree, i think there was plenty of reason for it. He had a good life, but he wasn't ever completely happy. He got a taste of what it was really like to live and be happy and it was taken from him, and that took all of the hope for happiness from him. he was sure he was facing a life of nothing but being "the dutiful son" and he knew he couldn't handle it. He got to a point where he was sure the only way his father would ever hear him, was if he went to this extreme.

  • @dancerbabe32 ...no one is really happy...90% of north americans are economic serfs, in life long bondage or victims of bad marriages...3/4 of north american kids don't have the comforts, upbringing or opportunities that neill squandered...i certainly didn't and would have envied neill...i realize that half of suicides occur for sillier reasons (kurt cobain fans)...the fault here lies with neill himself and not his father who cared too much...my fathers caring was expressed with his fists

  • @jethro035181 his fathers concern was not caring... i think it was more Fear of not having the son he always wanted than care at all

  • ... You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
  • To better understand the mindset of the father we need look no further than the comment "OH...MY SON" A common mistake amongst parents to assume they OWN " their sons or daughters. To quote Kahlil Gibran: Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. .....more,
  • @turtle669 well said, dude.

  • For some reason, I always believe that yelling 'Don't do it, Neil!' At the screen will help. It never does

  • I was enjoying this film, but the suicide was melodramatic and an unrealistic reaction. This film just lost points.

  • @Kjobbit I completely agree with you. Why was everyone so concerned about todds reaction??

  • @Kjobbit yep ur right on the money...

i like good will hunting better

  • @Kjobbit futility is unrealistic? we deal with it everyday. some just can't find a reason to anymore. suicide is no different than picking out a pair of socks from the top drawer. don't judge.

  • That was the last straw for Neil

  • That was the last straw Neil

  • 2:55, best scene ever.

    OH MY SOOOOOOOON

  • I watched this scene in English today and everyone knew he was going to commit suicide hence the long build up but when Reid woke up we thought it was a dream, then when he really was dead they started to laugh at the fathers "bad acting" when he finds him dead. Although I and the rest of my class thought it was a great twist and showed us how suicide can be just round the corner.

  • His death is so poetic. It's chilling

  • this is so sad

  • Neil !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -.-

  • so sad... after all, with all his delusions, his father certainly loved him

  • so sad...

  • lol - 1:24 scared the bejesus out of me.

  • Painting at @0:18 what is it? bcoz i have it...

  • ten more years of doing something he hated and not being allowed to follow your dream would have seemed like an eternity, so it is not that hard to believe that someone could suicide over it.

  • I'm sorry, but this movie is really a caricature of education. It makes students look saintly and innocent beings who are corrupted by the horrors of authority. It makes parents and teachers look crazy, controlling, and indifferent. Everyone who has been to a typical U.S. high school knows that the problem is typically too little parental and school authority, not too much. Having been in tons of school plays myself, I certainly do not agree with Neil's dad on that. But again, it's a caricature.

  • @hpd929 I respect your interpretation but disagree. Remember that the film also portrays the not-so-innocent side of teenage life in smoking, drinking, parties, etc. More important, however, this school is hardly a 'typical U.S. high school'. The benefit, perhaps, of locating the story within a private academy allows us to criticize the authority of capitalism and the class system much more prevalent sixty years ago. In any case, you're entitled to your opinion -- it remains a fantastic film.

  • In my opinion the suicide was not simply necessary, but altogether obligatory. I do consider it a horrid and tragic way to express a certain idea but Art in its way must move us beyond our understanding as this film does in order to get the message through. What else? What else was there to be done... As I come to think of it - Neil, as all poets (he's no a poet of course, you know what I mean), found his end prematurely and did what his soul urged him to.

  • What does todd yell at 5:06????

  • @soapsud14 NEIL!!!

  • what does todd yell at 5:07 ???

  • @soapsud14 NEIL!!!

  • The mum is so stupid.

  • i think alot of poeple are forgeting that this is a movie...the idea being that it exaggreats the truth..in neils situation if he couldnt do what he loved then he was already dead inside therefore suicide sint such a big deal...would you like to live if someone else was forever controlling your live

  • in my opinion, Neil's suicide is an exageration. it wasnt neccesary to turn the film into a tragedy. I know the father was an asshole, and deserved a beating, and i understand Neil felt like his life was over. But a Suicide??? Come on! Neil had to be mentally unballanced to go ahead with the suicide. The movie made it's point but there was no need to be so tragic.

  • Parents who act as in the preceding situation to this scene towards their children are acting as an executioner of their souls and a jailer for their minds...

    be free and Carpe Diem!

  • @HogwartsCastle

You are right about the scene not being totally believable. But it's a great message for parents not to push their children into doing something they don't want. Or even worse. To forbid to follow their dreams.

  • Neil should have shot his dad, not himself

  • Dude, seriously, just graduate from military school and then go somewhere and act. Daddy was a dickwad, but this is an over-reaction.

  • @eezysqueezy Yeah... I agree. I feel sorry for Neil Perry, but commiting suicide is really really stupid thing.

  • Damn... Neil become real Dead Poet..... If I were Neil, I'd rather run away from home not commits suicide..

  • I will never forget the flying desk set moment.

  • Neil's death was so emotionally tragic kind of ruined what could have been a really tremendous movie, did not fully approve of Neil's father such a very rude domineering faggot he just wanted to run his son's life and literally not care in the slightest when Neil felt unhappy and I personally think he should be held in total blame for what sadly transpired people like him should honestly I believe get punished and taught a real lesson Neil was a great character, who deserved a far better life

  • Idiot Fucking Neil. he should have spoken his mind instead of destroying his family like that. He should have at least tried to escape to make a stand, but not do that!!

  • niel DIED! :((

this part really made me cry

  • It's ironic how Neil becomes a full-fledged "Dead Poet" himself.

  • @kookykooky9090 i think that's the point :D

  • Mr Nolan reminds me of the Emperor Palpatine when he speaks

  • 2:45-2:50 = epic scene LOL

  • I wish that I had a teacher like Keaton and group of friends as shown in this movie.

  • This is my first time watching this movie - Oh my god Neil Killed himself :( So sad, im in shock and on the verge of tears. He was the one eho was so enthusiatic of carpe diem as well at the beginning... just goes to show how parents do effect their kids.

  • the end is good but still i hope we should saw that Mr. Perry would feel him guilty....

  • oh my god i just hope that my teacher won`t use either scenes here for my test tomorrow. cause i`ll start crying and then there is no way that i`m gonna be able to write a characterization.

  • i can understand Neil 100 percently...:/

I m near to look for a gun, sculpting is my life, i am good in it, but it s "forbidden" here at home....:'(

  • In order to suck the marrow out of life...you must stay alive. Neil did not try hard enough to live up to the DPS message. So sad, a beautiful young life cut short.

  • @lawman7117 It isn't that he didn't try hard enough. Have you ever felt the same way he did? These people try and TRY, Neil did try. He tried to earn his Dad's approval but his dad was just an ungrateful bastard. Even if the Dad didn't kill Neil himself, its still murder. The dad drove him to it.

  • @lawman7117

You're right, but I think Neil must have thought something like "I dont wanna spend my whole life the way you want; i want to suck out all the marrow out of life, or die if I cant have it my way" So in a way he sorta did act like a true member of the DPS.

  • @lawman7117 he broke free from his father's hold and ran free, even if for only a moment. but what a moment!

  • @lawman7117.CARPE DIEM.

  • Yes Mr Adminstrator...Did you learn anything by such a tragedy? no, probably not

  • And yet you're watching it on youtube...

  • One of my favorite movies!

  • I was sick to my stomach watching this. :( Terrific movie though...

  • Wtf?! Why does my favorite character ALWAYS die?

What a sad scene...I came very close to crying...

  • ur not the only one dude :(

  • Alternate ending:

He lived and became a doctor who would work alongside House. He also changed his name to Wilson, but he still dreams of what could have happened if he stuck to acting.

  • thats hilarious

  • An ending that is pleasing. But Wilson is quite different to Neil and people don't change that much. I hope.

  • @FadeLLW and he'd be unhappy .

  • Neil's father... one of the most hated fictitious characters ever

  • what neil did was sad and wrong but you have to realise how he knows that things will never get better and with his father he will never have a choice and things will always be bad

  • dad doing wat He thinks is best...nuff said

  • As much as people hate his Dad, he's only doing what he thinks is best for his son. Just look at his reaction when he finds him dead.

He really loved him, and was doing his best. Parenting has come a long ways, and that was pretty standard for the day.

People used to give human sacrafices to gods long ago, yet they were doing what was 'right'. You can't judge actions by current standards or the standards of a different culture. Or at least you shouldn't.

  • His dad didn't love him, and the reaction is shock, anyone would react that way. He probably felt extremely shocked and overwhelmed with guilt

  • we know he loved him but he was gifted student who would prmoise to fullfill his fathers request but he wanted to do something that he liked, its not like he would take acting up as a career maybe something to do in his freetime. He is a very smart student

  • "Parenting has come a long ways, and that was pretty standard for the day."

And it would still be the standard of the day today if it was left up to people like Neil's father. And indeed 90% of the public.

  • are u saying 90 % of the public would rather the customs of those days?

  • the end does not justify means

  • I don't condone his methods, but I can see he's got his families best intentions in mind.

If my son wants to be an actor, great. If he wants to be a zoologist, great. If he wants to work with the poor, great. As long as he chooses what he's passionate about, I'll be behind him 100%.

My father is a hard working farmer with different ideas so I never had that freedom. But I know his reasons and have great respect for him.

Don't judge from your vantage point. Use theirs.

    Peace.

  • This is soo sad! and so touching. I always cry when this bit comes on.

  • I can't believe they could sing. When i was at my grandpa's funeral i tried to sing but eventually just stopped and cried...

  • men always try and put on a front. even young men. but not all of them are singing.

  • Gee. I wonder just how nice, neat and orderly Mr. and Mrs. Perry's lives were after their son killed himself.

  • Our class studied this film. It was so good, this is my favorite scene.

  • in this day and time if something like this happend the school would be sued. I grew up around a few guys that i know thier fathers were insanely strict on them, it was sad because they were good kids but you could tell thier spirt was broken and they were meerly pawns for thier parents wishes...ive got a 7 year old but im rasing her in the lioght of the world is her oyster because i think good kids can find theings for themswelves, i cant contro her destiny or mine..sad yet wonderful movie..

  • I wonder how they got the cordite smoke to just hang in the room without post production editing.

  • Does anyone know what the song is they sing at the funeral? I know it's psalm 23, but what version? I can't seem to find it anywhere else...

I'd be grateful for any info;)

  • I believe it is the hymn "The Lord's My Shepherd" composed by Jessie S. Irvine =)

  • thanks;)

  • What the hell, they all signed the document? You've gotta be kidding me. Without a spine, its a wonder these kids are able to walk.

  • they had to sign and I don't think it would have made a difference to Keating's being fired anyway. Had they refused another way would have been found. There was no point in jeopardizing their own futures for no reason, Keating would not have wanted that either

  • He killed himself because he had no control of his life. He couldn't do anything he wanted and all the decisions were made by his father. I'm not saying he should have killed himself, I just mean he wasn't going through life without his own path.

  • DecayingGreyPlanets

    u just don't get it?

  • i think that neil killing himself was the only choice he has every made by himself and its ironic and sad that it would mean the end of his life.

however it is funny that this actor went on to play wilson in house - in this movie he didnt want to go to medical school but in house he's a doctor lol

  • To me the most heartbreaking part is how Todd reacts, how he can' t believe his dearest friend in the world, the gentlest, kindest spirit would kill himself and leave him. And when he screams for Neil and stands on that dock all alone with that gorgeous flute melody playing. My eyes brim with tears everytime.

  • What is it that Todd screams as he's running through the snow? It's my favourite scene in the movie. It's so beautiful and heartwrenching but I can never seem to catch that last bit.

  • Sounds like he's screaming "Neil"

  • he screams "Neil"
