  • Great song. Thompson at his best when dealing with challenging subjects. The words my God. So much heart and compassion and wisdom. Man, thankful to be alive

  • perfect bar song. 'specially for RT!

  • Damn, just realized that I was living in Seattle at the time and had intended to go to the concert, but for some reason I cannot recall, did not do so. Now I gotta kick myself in the ass really hard!

  • I had assumed this was of Sufi origin; thanks for the reference.

  • I was there. Mural Amphitheater wasn't it? I must have had a good time.

  • They can't hear the insults.

  • Why are the stupid audience talking shit all the way through this, maybe they are the paper shuffling fools thinking about driving back to there semis and pensions, HEY, shut up and listen to the artist at work, Bloody idiots...

  • God = group of drunks.

  • This is one of the greatest songs ever written, and you can't argue otherwise!

  • Hi Joni 36...I was there too! Thanks for recording!!!

  • Amen!!!

  • Ironic how at 2:38 some loud mouth drunk in the audience messed up your tape. Some people just need a foot planted between their teeth I guess. Killer tune, and so far it looks like the only live version out there of GLaD, so thanks forthe post. I still have this show on VHS somewhere...

  • @pumpkinhold No fucking shit man. I've followed Richard Thompson et.al. definitely should not be playing for cracker assholes like this. The guy is mellow and cool as shit, Humbleness in a talent of his caliber is rare I feel. an unbelievable genius, all these years and he's only gotten better and better. a thinking person's guitar fucking monster. so the kick in the teeth I'm there i'd hold drunken fool's head to that curb.

  • Amazing!

  • cracking fashion sense!

  • Apparently they worship him every night at the local pub.....

  • That a fact eh, pegleg? And what do they call the said public house? The Moribund Arms? Must have good taste then, I've seen him meself a few times live, hes a great folk writer. Liked some of fairport conventions stuff too. Hes converted to Islam, bloody Nora they're all at it these days! Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam, whatever next? Elton John in a diamante jewel encrusted Bhurka? LOL!

  • Richard Thompson converted to the sufi muslim faith in the early 1970's....

  • The song is based on ja-lal adin rumi's poetry which often used the alagory of the drunk. Rumi is the best known sufi poet.

  • @TomRAFC - Excellent piece of information that restores my faith in the idea of the youtube comment. I wish I knew more about Sufism. Thanks for that - I'm off to look him up.

  • @TomRAFC Is that right?? My favourite poet and my favourite song - can that be that true??

  • @piedpiperpianos completely true, richard is a dedicated sufi

  • @CaptainKubla or maybe Susan Boyle in a burqa?

  • But it's sung even better by Norma Waterson!

  • that's easy this man wrote it

  • some of the best songwriting I've ever heard.

  • AMEN.
