  • @froosh

lo wheres the head at! and how do you tune that thing?

  • Throw the pick in the Trash !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 1:13 to 2:28 must be erased...hey! teacher leave us kids alone

  • I understand that playing with a pick is a perfectly valid playing style, but I don't think it works very well for this particular bassline. Sounds a bit muted the way this guy is playing it.

  • Skip ad.... click 0:00 :/

  • Another one Bites (the dust).

  • you can't funk with a pick yo

  • i envy your backline. >.< most of all.. your cabinet!!! xD!!!

  • that pick is pretty white of you bro

  • Poor guy.:c

  • Good job!

    Check out mine....

  • fssssst ..fssssssssssssssssss

  • which bass is?

  • aww...he aint got no groove

  • Good, but the bassline always sounds smoother and slightly more legato without the pick. The pick makes the line sound a bit choppy.

  • Its not totally wrong, but not the right way.

Use your pinky, drop the pick and you´ll sound less as they call it as a white bassplayer. Add some feel to it, and then the chicks will definitly love it bro!

  • Bernard Edwards, Bootsy Collins, James Jamerson, Louis Johnson, Paul McCartney, Larry Graham, Dee Murray, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Flea, Robert "Kool" Bell, John Paul Jones. If you want to play bass, study the masters.

  • epic sound!

    *thumps up*

    keep on

  • Omg sounds cool

  • ...and the guys love it too, not just the girls.

  • Happy Man and Chic Cheer both have arguably the better baselines.

Either way lose the pick - what kind of bass player are you?

  • hay teach us how to play voyager by daft punk

  • u go boy

  • shit bass. really, learn to groove and FUCK UP THIS PIC IS JUST A PIECE OF SHIT!

get a real bass, learn to slap or play guitar.

  • @HitTheB4ss10

Slap is just a technique. It's cool, but slap doesn't define a bass player's skill all the time.

  • Stop telling dude how to play. Apparently he doesn't want to slappa da bass. He wants to picka da bass. Why does it bother you so much?

  • give the man a break..its just a small demo for begginers.. by now this shuold be the "Smoke On The Water" of basslines..for all you pros out there..the guy has still recognized something of value..yeah the pick and 80s equipment and circutry is flat and cheezy..he was still playing it...and wanted to share..

  • this is disgusting. maybe if he just didnt use a damn pick, or palm mute the shit out of it. disgrace

  • dull

  • wow that bass looks like a piece of shit

  • i don't like the picking sound and the palm mute, not for bass

  • Surely this man is the inspiration for the character ''Andrew Bernard'' on NBC's ''The Office''

  • I stopped watching as soon as I saw he had a headless steinberger...

  • i hate his bass so much ! though he sounds so nice.

  • A bass sounds best when played pizzicato and not with a plectrum.

  • That's an asinine statement because for the most part it comes down the style of music you're playing and the sound you desire. I'd never play fast heavy music with my fingers because it takes the edge off all the notes.

  • @mill0x Different people, different opinions. It depends on the song, on the style, etc. Remember, there is no 'the only one and true' wasy in music.

  • You are the "whitest" bass player on the planet!

  • @BadRedS10 so white

  • @BadRedS10 and your point is???

  • I think the bass line sounds better in E flat

  • Stop hating! He actually plays it pretty good.

  • yes it is the best bass line in the whole wide world!

  • you make it look so easy, man!!!!!!

  • it's easy!

  • You are darling...I am 60 and you are lovellllly!

  • this video made me get a bass

  • stop talking, throw away that pick and buy a decent bass.

  • the girls love it? well, I know they don;t love it when you say "whole wide world"

  • This is actually pretty decent

  • get rid of the pick for this line!

  • @lazzer7 Yeah man it sounds like small wood hitting! Just play it with your middle and index fingers and throw away that pick. Even though well done!

  • @lazzer7

u suck. picking is just a style of playing.. and if he can play better with pick....where is the fucking problem?????????? i wanna see u playing that song. come on! load it up

  • cock version

  • hahaha you made laugh hard, asi q cock version!haha

  • your bass maybe look cool, but sounds like a pile of shit.

  • thats because he's using a pick other the the original was all fingers from benard edwards

  • Correctuion:

    Bernard played it,

    Nile wrote it.

Actually Nile wrote it after having dreamed it.

  • vergognati

  • just no

  • nice job man

  • Great job!

Now take a look on my version!!

    Peace!

  • yr good, buddy.

  • damn that is a weird bass it has no head???

  • e dorian :D

  • wow...i sure am glad you responded in a language that 99% of the worlds population can't understand.

  • Je suis tout à fait de ton avis, au médiator ça sonne pas des masses... Et effectivement la fin du riff n'est pas tout à fait exacte. Je comprends pas pourquoi les gens jugent ton commentaire comme "sans intérêt"...

  • well, you cocked that up didnt you.

  • fuck all ya hoes! this guy is tight!

  • but who cares! the girls love it:P

  • hahah GIRLS LOVE IT haha

  • ah man don't play with a pic, you need to play with your fingers instead a pic,

  • there's nothing wrong with using a pick. But this should definitely be fingers... and the dead notes, wtf? Good video anyway! The girls love it, classic!

  • rapper's delight stole it, thats not sugarhill gang's AT ALL

  • stop trying to find shit wrong with his video

    this is good shit!

  • nothing wrong with playing with a pick.

playing pick gives a more aggressive tone and i think a slightly brighter sound for rock really

IMO it is a easier technique to learn because youre only training your wrist instead of two individual fingers

  • "IMO it is a easier technique to learn because youre only training your wrist instead of two individual fingers "

That is why most bass players despise them. They feel it is a "short cut" to playing.

  • Short cuts are better.

  • maybe for other things

never take a short cut in music

itll just end up in unsatisfaction

  • Wow he played the bass line completely wrong, unnecessary muting, missing notes, plus he's using a pick.

  • I don't agree. It's only Chic's song !!!!! Rappers delight copy Chic :p !!!!!!

  • Nice to upload something instructional but this is THE worst rendition I've ever heard! I hope Bernard is not hearing this, RIP.

  • great send me a tab plz

  • shut the hell up kkellybass youre a fuckin moron thats just like saying real guitar players dont use wah pedals you dumb ass. Although, on another note. How do you think he tunes that bass? I mean it doesnt have the normal end like every other bass. do you think its like a gibson robot version of a bass? Some please tell me!

  • no you tune it at the bottom, its a sternberg or however you spell it

  • there are tuning peggs near the rear of the body, by the bridge

  • Admit it. You regret saying that, right?

  • Cool!!

  • IT SOUNDS LIKE THE WHOLE SHIT!!!!

  • awsome!!!!!

  • Picks provide an easy way to produce a different sound on the bass. Many bass players (funk, disco, hip/hop) will opt to use a pick to produce that funky sound.

  • TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE

  • You should check out Deep Purple, Motörhead, Yes and a few other bands before you mock bassists for playing with a pick..

  • i love ur bass, i like how it doesnt have a headstock.

  • at least he knows to play the bass somehow.

this is youtube, everybody can upload everything.

    what can you do?

that was brutal man i m still crying ;D

  • what a shit of bass guitar have you got?

  • It's a Steinberger...

The tuners are at the bottom.

    It's actually a hell of a bass!!

  • bernard edwards please don t be upset this is just bullshit!!!!

  • OMG, YOU'RE AWESOME!!!! :DDDDD

  • same bass line on Another bust the dust by Queen

  • queen used it with conciderably less cool and in a kinda crapy way though.

  • at least Queen played it with their own instruments

but sugarhill had just copy the sample

btw, i like rapper's delight very much

  • Actually not true. The rhythm tracks on "Rapper's Delight" were played by actual musicians. In fact, I THINK it is Doug Wimbish playing bass on it.

  • well said

  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Watch my Rappers Delight!!!!!!

  • will you come work for me???! lol

  • The bass line was used without credit or royalty on Sugarhill Gang's "Rappers Delight" in 1979 - the first rap song to become a mainstream hit. The following twenty-odd years has seen it sampled by artists of diverse genres, from Rap to Punk and Techno to Pop. Duran Duran bassist John Taylor often played the song in homage during his solo performances, and cited Edwards as his primary influence

  • Awesome bassline. Rock on, or I mean, FUNK ON!!! Thanks for showing it to me.

  • yeah man COOL!

  • Cool ! ! !

  • Wow there are hundreds of comments here criticizing the bass playing - perhaps these people can upload a video of them playing it perfectly?

  • Of course they won't because they can't play it for starters. Plus you know there's always the haters who love to troll youtube.

  • There are two ways of playing this song, the way he does or another fill down a string, both ways are right just depends on how you like to play. Also just becuase he uses a pick doesn't mean he's a bad bass player, the bassist out of Guns n' Roses uses a pick...So think about what you say before you make retarded comments like that. Anywho nice video Froosh ^_^

  • sooooooo nice !

  • Damn....Dude, you are getting totally rape about that pick thang....but their all right though....I am drummer for a funk band and funk is thick and dirty and the more meat on the E string the better....but most of all you are not playing the part right....Benard would not be please....Peace

  • to be honest I dont think you're a "proper" bassist if you have to play with a pick because you cant play with your fingers. It just isnt showing any skill or talent!

If this was the case then any old guitarist could pick up a bass and use a plectrum and go "hey look, i can play bass"!

By the way I'm a guitarist but like fucking about on bass too, I never play with a pick though! Whats the point of playing funk with a pick anyway?

  • First off I never read on here or ever heard him say he was a pro or that he played in a band. I think he did a great job for what he knows. There's a hell of alot of people out there that can't even play that...

  • Goddamn you play a mean banjo! How about doing the riff out of "Every ones a winner" by Hot Chocolate?

  • O FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, please DONT USE A PICK!!

  • I second that.

  • nice bass!

thats only a simplified version of the riff tho!

  • I like to play it with fingers althought its more easy with the pick, and the pickup gives it a 'percussive feel' ...

also one of my favourite bass lines :P

  • For me, the funky bass needs some finger contact, not a pick. Theres nothing wrong with the way he plays it, but it lacks a certain flow to really be classified as funk.

  • this teacher rally sucks

  • ^^ great

  • yeah great bass song. but u deaden the strings 2 much.

  • Wau! Good boy!

  • OK.. Let's get off the pick vs no pick argument, cuz it's LAME! Anthony Jackson plays almost EXCLUSIVELY with a pick, and there is NO denying that man's funk, considering he wrote the bass part on "For The Love Of Money" by the O'Jays. Bernard used his chucking technique, which simulates using a pick to play "Everybody Dance".(check out my videos for a demo on this) The bottom line here is that he is not playing the right feel, leaving out important anticipations and adding notes. End of story.

  • Thats what I said, sometimes I do use a pick, just for more indie/punk/ska grooves but for soul-jazz- funk you get a better feel when you slide into the notes and not play it like a computer might! slap n tickle.

  • Sorry but the tone and attack is totally ruined by doing it with a pick. SFor The Love Of Money was written for and played with a pick, but Chic's tunes weren't, especially not Good Times.

  • Good tone from a headless. Would like to see without a pick and maybe some slappin'.

  • Someone should put a restraining order on this dude and that bassline! God it sounds awful with a pick! Bernard Edwards is churning in his grave I'm sure! Bloody awful!

  • i REALLY don't like this pick tone !!!

  • nice guitar pick. think about using those fingers.

  • i'm black and think he's awesome! don't be a hater.

  • no, you're a moron "highwayno9".

  • no he isn't.. the tone on that bass is alright and obviously set to funk but i don't think the pick tone is suitable for this.. i prefer playing it with my fingers

  • metrognome might not be how its spelled, but its what you need.

  • ??? Good timing!!??

  • I think that whatever the colour of the bass player, it just shows what effect Chics music had on music lovers of all races and colours all over the world and some of you need to just get off of the "race line" and just "let the music play". Chci weer just a classy damn good band and I love them always. Bernard(RIP)/Nile, you and Tony and Lucy made me so happy in the 1970s, thanks! I kept your music! and my five years old son loves you too!

  • Fucking terrible bass player. What else can you make sound shit!!!!!! Also don't try & explain that shit as it happens in a second with geniuses like Bernard Edwards etc. No thought or structure just feeling which you seem to be short of to say the least.... Cheers.

  • yea ..........it's not exactly like that...

close in off but not the same

  • Good job Whitman....

but you need to ad more chocolate tooda flayva.

We just tastin a lil 2 much vanilla.........

  • Thats funny, that's so true, you gonna add more chocolate.

  • NYCITY3; I know. Good job on the bass but I would add just a touch of luvvvv. Sounds a little too white-boy-ish. Add some brown sugar to dat tea. Add some cinnamon to da flava. Add some chocolate to dat plain ole milky white shake. Dammmm....

  • yea dude!!

    to white. dam right!!

le falta huevos vieja!!!!( need more testicles)

    ok!!

  • that bass is freakin sweet

  • Whitest sugar hill gang bassline EVER. hahahahaha. awesome.

  • ha ha ha - you're right!

  • Awesome...my son would love this...

  • did queen have that tone.......another one bites the dust

  • I've always thought that! wow!

  • no its not same but its close this base line on rappers delight come before queens another one bites the dust

  • My son is learning bass, I'll be sure to show him this clip. He's 10yrs he'll love this. Awesome!

  • best bassline ever!

  • awesome guy! :)

  • does it really fucking matter pick or no pick

  • Yes...it matters.

  • It Matters A LOT Actually.

  • Great ! I love it already.. even that i don't play with a pick, it works ;) Thank you for this nice bassrif

  • It could be a debate? That is why music is so interesting. My take:

The pick gives it to much treble/twap. It needs soft fingers/softened attack on this one. Try the Parliment bass riffs also.

  • paul mccartney only used a pick. and history clearly shows how much he sucks. pffff...you anti pick people are sad

  • lool. youre all n00bs. Who cares he plays with a pick? i can say that slap sucks and? Thats unfair. i prefer fingers, He likes pick. Ok. Its f..ing his choice the f..k!

  • there are many good lines and good players using pick. NOT THIS ONE!!!!

  • yeah but people are critisizing him just because he uses a pick

  • all pick haters are dumb

    what about great bassists

    like

john entwistle, chris squire, mel schacher all of them used picks!

  • john entwistle didn't use a pick, at least most of the time.

  • but he did use it

for a fact i know he used it on my generation studio bass solo

  • nooooooooooooo pick!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the pick ruins it your right

  • What's with the added notes? If it ain't broke don't fix it.

  • lol get yourself a better bass and drop the pick...
