  • If you expect low quality and low performance, run down this guys track. If you want reliability long lasting gear, spend a few dollars and you will be set for many many years to come. I run with msr as they have been proven time and time again. Anyone can make a budget cook system but they are just not effective nor reliable.

  • Thanks for the excellent videos Jason. I'm thinking about procuring the

Vargo Outdoors Triad XE Titanium Alcohol/Fuel Tab Stove

If you're familiar with this kind of stove system, any thoughts or suggestions you might have would be very appreciated.

    Kind regards friend -BRGZZ

  • would you put that over a fire too or do you think it would damage it

  • add rather use me ghillie cooker

  • hey, we just got back from RMNP (4d/3n). our 24oz can got a hole in it and we had to duct tape the hole before each boil. the kevlar tape is a very good idea.

there was so much traffic at our last overnight, Lake Odessa, i was hard pressed to find a clean spot to use the stove. i ended up "flaming" the points of contact where the stove parts touched surfaces before returning it to storage.

  • Jason - what is the time to boil ~16oz or one cup of water somewhere's around 5,000'?

i'll need to compare the boil times w/ the V8 burner i'm using. usually, when i decide to stop what i'm doing and eat, i'm in no mood to wait. i wanna eat and not wait.

i'll do this tonight and re-post with boil time results at 4,000'.

oh, the huge advantage to this would be the alcohol bottom could be punctured and we'd be on the trail. and yeah, trying to remember the edible plants in the area.

  • @roscogruen

Go to my website "Homemade Backpacking Gear" and click on the link called "altitude vs. boil times". It give you a chart with the boiling point of water for a given elevation.

  • Jason, this is the vid that got me started on this stuff. It's shot outdoors, which is huge. Nearly every other stove video isn't. It's just a really good practical shot of a good classic system. Thanks!

  • @kc7fys

    Cool, thanks man!

  • nice kit but why not just make a V8 stove it would burn a lot hotter and is just a little bigger?

  • Where's the V8 stove's plan? I'd like to see that one in action.

  • Nice little rig..small and lightweight, what happened to the beer...?..lol..

  • Hey, where can i get the tape, you used to wrap the can?

  • @doulos1129

    google the wick store

  • Where can I find Kevlar tape?

  • Thanks Jason. A will do for me!

  • that heiny can doesnt melt or bubble or....yknow...break down a little over fire?

  • nope

  • Were those humming birds that I heard in the background? Great system and great vid. I know changed your system since this video was made but this one is still very cool and seems very functional.

  • Close. My fridge!

  • Very funny! I hope that you and your wife have a happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for all of the backpacking/hiking knowledge. Out.

  • Same to you and yours.

  • You go Macgyver!!!! Thats some homemade shit!! 5/5 from me.

  • I am new to backpacking, and i plan to make it a lifestyle rather then a hobby... so point me in the direction of anything cool in that area guys.

That being said, where do i get Kevlar tape, and how well can you keep a tea candle from beng blown out?

  • ive been using my coffe pot for this its not ul but im not very ul for now but i like it because it rattles were i hike and camp its better to make noise so bears and moose know your coming and its large enough to feed like four ppl.and two dogs since they eat the same food as we do would like to lightin load a little but am working with what i have

  • Thanks for the vid.... I'm wondering, where I might find a side-cutter can opener?

  • Bed Bath and Beyond, Williams Sonoma, pretty much any cooking shop should have them. I got mine at the supermarket.

  • Good idea and video as well my camping brother.Just had back surgery and cant wait to get outside and try it. Thanks!

  • hey is this neer denver???

cuzz i feel like ive seen this befor?

  • Yes, just outside of Bailey, CO on Rolling Creek Trail. Good eyes!

  • hmm one gust of wind ,and thats gone! sorry but not for me.good effort though

  • Appalachian Trail: Ramen noodles and high mileage...until you get to the next town. Eat it dry if you don't want to carry fuel/cooker. Then once in town, consume nutrients in preparation for the next section. Repeat. Over and over and over again. Until you reach Maine. Yay!

  • what about the 100 mile trail?

  • whats the point of doin the AT if your not enjoying it??

  • geek#

  • wow where r u? love your videos

  • Thanks! This video was filmed in Lost Creek Wilderness Area in Colorado.

  • Where did you get the kevlar tape??

  • um....just for the record on the aluminum alzheimer's debate, new medical research actually shows that high levels of aluminum in the brain is actually a product of having alzheimer's, not the cause...I think the real hazard here is not the aluminum in the heiny, but the lining. Just because it doesnt burn off doesnt mean it's not leaching chemicals into the water. It may be ok at room temperature for beer, but at 212, not so much...

  • I beg to differ"homemadealcoholstove" Until 1979 alzheimer's did not exist not even by some other name. It started when lowfat low cholesterol diets arrived on the seen. The human brain's weight is 72%cholesterol(the good kind). Its called myelin which insulates the synaptic pathways in the brain and when deficient, causes memory loss. The Earth's crust is 13%Aluminum, common sense to those who know this says more people would have this physician-caused disease from low fat/cholesterol diets...

  • I believe that the accepted term in the old days that was used to cover all mental problems of older persons was 'senile dementia' we still use this term today as a catch all for when older people start having mental problems. To say that "alzheimer's did not exist" is not necessarily true, the DIAGNOSIS as Alzheimers did not exist, maybe.

  • "Alzheimer's disease (AD), also called Alzheimer disease, Senile Dementia of the Alzheimer Type (SDAT) or simply Alzheimer's, is the most common form of dementia. This incurable, degenerative, and terminal disease was first described by German psychiatrist and neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer in 1906 and was named after him"

  • so is tin foil safe or what? shagittome-I didn't understand a word you fucking said. Jesus, in English please.

  • JUST WAIT A SEC! if you go into your kitchen or your moms or your grandmas, you are bound to find pans or pots made of aluminum. (my grandma does). i wouldn't recommend using the aluminum though but there are tons and tons of people that use it right in there kitchen because its cheaper then cast iron and other safer metals.

    ya thats my thoughts....

  • Im a total fan of you Jason :) love the vids.

  • Where did you get the kevlar tape??

  • The video is excellent. I want to see a detailed video about making the cut in the Heine can safely. Your lisp is just like my own. I enjoy all of your videos.

  • Thanks! That's a good idea for a video. A lot of people have emailed me about that because it's a little tricky. Maybe I'll do one on that.

  • Look in to a home made wood gas stove. It is the same size and will burn any wood. thanks for the video.

  • Thanks for posting your videos.

Rather than filing down the cut wires on your pot stand you could simply bend them down on the inside to create a rounded surface for the pot to sit on.

Also, the "Aluminum pots give you Alzheimer's" stuff is phooey.

You might have noticed that nick promised to get some links to studies, but didn't.

My guess is that he actually looked into it and found that he was mistaken.

Please google it yourself and note the responses from actual studies, not hippies.

    Peace.

  • Ha, ha. Thanks for the advice!

  • How long does the tea stove cook for and what kind of fuel do you use?? Great Vid

  • It uses denatured alcohol and will burn for about 8 minutes or so depending on conditions.

  • that hand action at 2:10 looked pretty funny

  • thank you for pointing out such a random thing.. i bet you are one of those people that can spot the lude things in disney movies... lol.

ps. nick below is a tard.

  • Whoops I made the mistake of praising you earlier... Well sort of... I believe this is before you bought your titanium... NO ALUMINUM! (or ALUMINIUM for you European folks) For those of you who don't know.. aluminum causes ALZHEIMER'S which is a disease that causes loss of memory, and dementia. Meaning... say good by to everyone you know... you won't know them anymore (in time) I'm not saying that titanium is safe.. just that ALUMINUM CERTAINLY IS NOT! Never add heat to aluminum especially!

  • hmmm not sure where you get your info but i've never heard this before so i did some research im in the med field so i have access to some good peer reviewed research articles and everything i've found says that this has not been proven so stop posting this on all the alcohol stove video pages

  • Don't tell me what to post and what not to post.. I'm trying make sure people know that aluminum isn't safe for cooking, and dig a little deeper, just because you check out one source that is involved with the medical community doesn't mean it's correct, they have have found the higher levels of Aluminum in Alzheimer's patients brains. I like what your doing it's cool, but don't be so quick to move aside the research. I'll see if I can post a web address with the actual study results...

  • You have to burn the aluminum and inhale the vapors to actually ingest it. This happens at 1200 degrees farenheit. So it doesn't happen when cooking with aluminum, regardless of the connection b/t aluminum and alcohol. I doubt that will convince you though...

  • Actually no. because thats not what the study says at all, and you don't have to melt aluminum to have it affect your food, just like LED does't have to be melted "or burned as you called it" to effect you, Look do what you want, I don't care, just know that they don't make deodorant without aluminum just for fun, it's for a reason! (Tom's and Trader Joes brands, both make a note to say on the out side, ALUMINUM-FREE.)

  • if there have been studies that prove aluminum to be connected with alzheimers and those that prove that it don't why would you take the risk? you may be right but why even risk it, is it a huge deal to just not use aluminum? i know i don't think so...

  • Trader Joe's sells homeopathic cold medicine too...does that mean that homeopathy is real?

  • what does this have to do with anything?

  • this was a reply to nickothompson's claim that because Trader Joe's sells deodorant with "does not contain aluminum" on the label, that validates his claim that aluminum cookware is linked to Alzheimer's. The real issue will aluminum cookware is when cooking very acidic foods (tomatoes and the like), however, as back packers we're usually just boiling water in the aluminum and thus it's a non-issue.

  • you're an idiot. Besides that, even if what you were saying was true, elevated levels of aluminum in the brains of alzheimer's patients wouldn't imply the alzheimer's was caused by ingestion of aluminum at all. people with untreated hemochromatosis have elevated levels of iron in their bodies. Does that mean iron causes hemochromatosis? NO! stellar logic einstein. you're a scientist aren't you? How about those studies now?

  • This was meant for Nickthompson.

  • Nick may be suffering from Alzheimer's himself. Yes, there may be a connection, but it's an issue of degrees. Camping and making food in an aluminum Heine pot will not hurt you. Geez.

  • Great idea. I will be trying this soon.

  • Where would one get kevlar tape?

  • Aluminum can (beer/soda) have a thin liner of plastic on the inside to prevent corrosion and metallic taste. Doesn't this degrade and leach into your food when you repeatedly heat it?

  • Wouldn't it just burn off at some point?

  • it will only leach off if you stick it over a fire empty. Which isnt recommended for any pots as it can also warp it if the heat is great enough. Especially with nowadays lightweight cook gear.

  • Yeah thats another even worse Idea than to cook in aluminum, it's taking a step further and cooking a plastic lining that is NOT designed to be heated... and why do you think the Lining is in these cans? (to all of you saying aluminum is safe?) No, it's not to keep it cold, it's becasue there are questions about it's safety when used in contact with food!

  • I tried this setup and I had to use two full tea lights of fuel to get the boil. I did not a have proper stand though, I used a coke can cut up and it was a bit to close to the tea light. Was that the problem you think?

  • I'm using the heineken penny stove which would be a bit big for this pot, I'm using the open country pot. But I'm thinking a mini penny stove style made from the little v-8 cans would be good with this pot rather than the tea light. Only a touch bigger, would still fit inside, but probably more efficient, being pressurized.

I like the idea of the side-cut opener use for making a lid. Excellent idea. Now I'll have to dump out more heineken though, that beer's nasty.

  • could you do a vid on the back packing gear you carry and your first aid kit thnks

  • What do you use for fuel?

  • Denatured Alcohol. I use the S-L-X brand in the paint thinner section at Home Depot

  • Nice Tape!! Wow, where did you find kevlar tape. And thanks!! A+ production!

  • very innovative! thanks for sharing

  • nice system but the stove and stand is a bit under size ,I would go to a bit larger stove and a bit wider stand for sure the ones i make are are powder coated with 16 jets and on a once and a half fuel and thats incluiding primer fuel i can boil 26 ounces our 1 pint of water in just under 7 minuets and be eating in under 15 min thats with set up time with it.

  • The Heineken can is pretty ingenious. How long does this setup take to boil 500ml (2 cups) of water, and how long does the fuel last?

  • Depending on altitude, 10-12 min. The overall burn time is about 10-13 min. In certain conditions, you have to add more fuel to the stove before you get a good boil though

  • I enjoyed learning about your improvised cooking system. Very clever. Thanks for taking the time and passing on the inspiration.

  • Me too.
