  • RIP you absolute tank.

  • A Canadian... never knew and I was in stageband in High School and played this.

But in Canada out school history only involves that I was a mean white man and how we oppress the world.

  • maynard = legend

  • Damn, brings back some memories.. RIP Maynard.....

  • Maynard Ferguson is amazing!

  • i've been playing for 6 years and Ferguson could still play better than i do, in he's sleep!

  • 46 seconds - what a note!!!!

  • so I figured out the melody at 1:38

yeah. I took it up an octave :D

you know you're a trumpet player when you take every possible excuse to play a super G xD

  • @IrishLebaneseBeast So true. I was told a story about a recording by a big band. One saxophonist brought his daughter, due to a lack of babysitter funds. During a break, his daughter asked to play one of the trumpets. She played a few notes and everything was alright. Said saxophonist left to get coffee. He then heard his daughter screaming and crying, stamping her feet. He rushed back through to see what had happened and heard that she was screaming:

    "I WANT TO GO HIGHER!!!!!!!"

  • @MriCantRead now THAT'S a trumpet player beginning :DD

  • Where could I get the written sax solo parts from this version? It would be soooo great!

  • What's fun is to set up a tuner in front of your speakers and watch it play tennis at the beginning :D

  • I've been playing trumpet for about 7 years, and when i heard this on a recording in my jazz band class, my director said "you could do thid David" chyeah right... Maynard Ferguson is awesome

  • @TrumpeterDavid nova is crazy. just kidding. you could probably drop an octave though

  • last note of that solo. That is all

  • its only on like the 6th or 7th ledger line (idk how to spell)

  • it's so beautiful I almost started crying

  • non-milq-toast

  • this was awesome live too!!!!!!\

  • I heard him in concert twice... amazing... and a really nice guy too. One of the greats!

  • Maynard, I miss you bro =[

  • God, I could only imagine what Maynard would be like sitting on soprano in a brass band. It would be an absolute eargasm!

  • What the hell is going on here? I thought this space was for comment on the video best section is the shout chorus after the key change though...

  • @Syck0s0cial133 -i'm a member of a big band that play on a national standard and we have some damn good trumpeters and i can appreciate them. my boyfriend is our lead trumpeter so becuase of him and the other guys, i've actually learned enough to appreicate good trumpet music. so you just go stfu. Oh and btw, i play alto. does that bother you?

  • @chlob94

LOL xP you should be sucking his dick instead playing music

you play alto no all im saying is that ppl r like omg hes so great; i play tenor sax too and his stuff is so amazing

and it servs no purpose to say that

  • @Syck0s0cial133 oh i do both believe me ;)

  • @chlob94

    prove it then

  • @Syck0s0cial133 pahaha you wish hun

  • @chlob94

Oh so now you can tell me what Im wishing too? shit ur talented

  • @chlob94 A wild troll appeared. Let's not feed it.

  • I like how all these kids are like "Oh I play Tenor"

who fucking cares you dont know shit about trumpets then...just stfu

  • @Syck0s0cial133 I'm a piano player. How do you know we know nothing about trumpets? Piss off!

  • @SuaveTito exactly :)

  • @SuaveTito

    Cuz youre a fag

  • MAYNARD FERGUSON used SCREECH

    It's super effective!!

    Musicians fainted!

  • I wish I could make my clarinet out of brass just to play this D=, and no a soprano is not the same thing

  • Im a trumpet player in my middle schools jazz band and we played this! We all LOVEDDDDD iT! Its our favorite song to play haha! Of course its an easier version but still XD!

  • We're playing this song in Jazz Band. I'm the guitarist(and alto/tenor sax for concert) and even I know no one should play that high on trumper. Maynard Ferguson isn't a legend for nothing.

  • Played first trumpet in my senior year of high school! The beginning wasn't quite so high, but there is a ridiculous part later that was awesome to play! This arrangement is simply wonderful!

  • i play drum set and im 12. my schol got a excalent by playing this song. this arrangement is way better though

  • I play the alto sax and im 13.....i am playin this song in my jazz band at skewl

  • Playing this song in our jazz band and ive gotta say it is just great :)

  • For alot of us who grow up hearing Maynard perform its fun to see the comments of folks just discovering him.

  • Hearing someone playing these incredibly difficult notes with such great tone, I'm just shaking my head in disbelief at the moment. Jazz truly brings out some amazing musicians.

  • I wish our arrangement in jazz band sounded like this... This is beast.

  • I love Maynard Ferguson. I listened to this with a pair of cheap headphones, and they actually broke playing this.

  • @jjbrah120 lol. I listened with nice headphones (Sony MDR-V6) and I almost died of awe. If you ever get the chance, pick up a pair. They're like $70 on Amazon.

  • I just wish it had the bass trombone solo in it that I'm playing.

  • Great ending

  • Thank you Maynard.

  • playing this in jazz band

  • Played this is jazz band.

  • 2 people suck dick

  • @Dojorno Wow. Reeeeeeeeaaaaaaal creative.

  • the amazing thing isn't his range.. it's that he sounds still awesome at this range.

  • Solos ungodly notes on trumpet, then switches to euphonium. My kinda jazz.

  • Switches from trumpet, then plays euphonium almost directly after. Freaking amazing.

  • I've got a real long ways to go before i can even get close to reaching the octaves he was playing

  • RIP Maynard best trumpet player ever

  • woahhh, from 0:52 - 1:00 i thought an opera singer started singing, atleast thats what i think it sounds like.

  • @CallsignWhat omg when you mentioned that i totally would have thought the same thing! lol

  • he don't play trumpet.. he makes sing his trumpet !

Incredible ! I'm really ... waw this man is a master of trumpet !

  • nine years trumpet, and I have difficulty playing this 8va down :-S

  • if you don't get the chills at 1:09 there is something wrong with you!

  • óóó jeahhhh very very fantastic music

  • 5:21 is like amazing

  • so upbeat and mindbendingly awesome!

  • anyone know what album this is off of?

  • @93mr0

I have the song from his Masters of the Stratosphere album

  • @93mr0 "This is Jazz #16"

    I think

  • 0:49 does anyone know the proper term for what that is called? I wanna learn how to do it, and need to know its proper name

  • I think it's "shaking"

  • ha found out, the proper name is Lip Trilling

  • @guitarhero31333 not in jazz... Its called, "THE SHAKE!!!!!!" :)

  • @ChrisisBass13 It has many different names. I personally like to call it "I almost ran out of breathe." Accidently did it at my jazz concert on a Birdland solo, and it sounded pretty damn good after I heard recording.

  • very baritone.

  • reminds me of old cartoons like the pink panther

  • Yeah

  • sheer amazingness

  • is that an electric bass, or a string bass?

  • That's an electric bass. No way a string bass could have that kind of volume, sustain, and attack.

  • 17 ive been playing tenor for 7 yrs and im just saying holy jesus crap in all mighty...that trumpet made me cream my pants!

  • @WeAreTVXQ duh... it's maynard... hahahaha

  • @WeAreTVXQ That happens when you're 17 sometimes. Heck, sometimes happens to me at 40.

  • @WeAreTVXQ He's not called the King of Screetch for nothin'. :)

  • @WeAreTVXQ creaming in your pants is not a response to a trumpet video i would think should be on youtube...this is to the 33 people who liked it too. shame on you, publicly fulfilling your trumpet fetishes

  • Played this video for my 12 yr old 3rd yr Trumpet student son. 1st time Maynard played Triple-E, I had to put his eyes back in his head!!! Maynard, being Maynard, proceeded to take his Trumpet EVEN HIGHER!!! My son's jaw dropped again! This time bouncing 3 times Off The Floor!!! The Saxes BLEW his little Mind Too! LOL

  • Outstanding Bio in Right Hand Corner!!!

  • There may never be a player with Maynard's absolute Mastery of the upper register! He reaches heights other players can't get to without a piccolo trumpet! It wasn't just playing high notes! Lotsa guys can go high. It was the SHEER POWER & endurance Maynard displayed while up there that made people's jaw drop! I fear we'll never see or hear another like him.RIP!

  • Is the sax solo at 3:24 a Tenor or Bari solo? Towards the end, it sounds like either one. O_o

  • tenor

  • Baritone.

  • It is clearly a bari sax, tone wise, and range wise.

  • at 3:24 it's a bari. but at 3:50 it's a tenor. i THINK

  • i agree, different tone, and the second seemed more comfortable higher in the range

  • 3:50 is alto

  • Who cares, they are saxophones. :P

  • Baritone

  • I'm a trumpet player also and I am the lead trumpet for the PVHS jazz band and we are playing this song and it is so awesome, one of my favorite parts is, 5:21-5:40 which I play maynards high part, the highest note he hits there is a double E!!!!

  • not hard lol

  • in the original arrangement of these songs. maynard wrote himself into the fourth part for chair audition purposes. so technically your the fourth trumpet player. kind of depressing for most lead players

  • im a trumpet player and that is pratically impossible! I salute you maynard

  • So, ya.... Cry some more trumpet players! Maynard owns you all, lol. Don't complain about his intonality if you don't grasp the fact that those notes are fricken high. I'm a sax player and I know that. I think there's some trumpet inside of me tho.

  • I had a phenomenal range but one thing always remained. Maynard was always the standard......still is!

    We miss you boss!

  • I love this guy!!!! How great he controls those high notes.

  • 4:44 yeah man sax solo is killin

  • i play this in jazz band on bass trombone

  • Hey its Randy, lol yeah im the Bari sax in this same jazz band :D

  • i can't figure out the rhythm at 4:39, can anyone help out?

  • same tempo just a bit of upbeats that might of gotten you

  • One of the best key changes of all time. we played this song in marching band, and as a drummer (snare) i did not get to really experience it. but we played it in jazz band one year and on organ its AWESOME!

  • In my next life, I want to be Maynard Ferguson!

  • be him now!!!

  • no way. those notes don't xxist

  • i got first trumpet on this song in jazz band

  • were playing this 4 jazz band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • we're playing this 4 jazz band too....too many memories. Love this guy.

  • Im in my first year of my schools jazz band, so fills arent quite my thing yet, and when they told me to play this song, I nearly shat my self, fireshaker is a fun song to play on drums though, but still kinda hard at points

  • The beginning solo is musical theater, which you don;t see in this video. Imagine M.F. acting like a preacher gettin' DOWN with the congregation. It's actually pretty funny if you ever get to watch it.

  • lol @ the thumbs down. Trumpet players scare me with their cult following for Maynard.

I agree about the solo though. I think it's out of style. That's not to say Maynard plays it poorly or that it's easy, but he can play low notes well too!

  • chris eickemeyer

  • We're playing this in Jazz Band and I GET THE TENOR SOLO YEAAAAAAH!!!

  • If only you played trumpet.

  • lebltherebel we're alike lol i got it too! LOL

  • Im playing this in my jazz band TENOR SAX SOLO

  • WHOOOOO!!!!!! that song rocks. The solos rock.

We're playing this in jazz band and I just can't get enough of it☺

  • hey do u have the sheet music for it for trumpet

  • I could try to get it, it probably wouldn't have the solo at the beginning though

  • exept for the beginning solo it is an extremely easy song. But a good toon

  • Yeah it is, but it's really good fun.

My Big Band did it in concert a few weeks ago. The crowd loved it. Some of the impro solos we stuck in were amazing as well.

    Great piece though. Love it.

  • wowwowowowowow a very nice music oh yeah!!

  • everytime i listen to this song

i always get chills. its that good.

  • I was told to listen to this song from a friend. I'm glad I am listening to this!

  • insanely amazing!!! im playing this in jazz band... go piano!!!

  • he died not to long ago, rest in peace

  • 00:57-1:01 sounds like someone singing lol

  • wow he kicks ass.

  • nice

  • im in a jazz band right, and my music teacher wants me to play this on the drums. And im in a middle school jazz band. I know this is going to be hard

  • at :56 he hits that B (concert A) and I swear to this day it still sounds like a woman singing, just amazing...

  • this dude is amazing!

  • Nice bio malawolf85!

  • That's amazing.. wow!

  • so frickin high...

Maynard will always be the best.

  • his playing wasn't really unique so match as practiced. he studied the art of hatha yoga breathing with a master, for a very long time. Thus the ridiculous control.

  • I hope that someday I can play high notes with that kind of tone. Maynard Ferguson was absolutely phenomonal at the extreme altissimo register.

  • This guy is freacking awesome. I hope one day i can play that high. wow. Just amazingly awesome.

  • One can dream, can't they? No need to be such a stick in the mud. :P

  • yeah i wasn't trying to be jerk about, only stating how maynards tone/high note playing is unique, and nobody will ever be the same

  • Thank you for postin' this video. I remember back in high school playing a watered down version of this. Cheers.
