What happened in the past shouldn't stop a country/person from attempting to set a proper example. If you look back in history you'll see that slavery was commonplace.

Obviously it wasn't the same as in the US and in other countries during that time, but the point is change is possible, and that is only possible when one learns from the past and attempts to institute the knowledge gained from that mistake. What better person/country to make that change than the guilty? Now it doesn't always happen like that but it is and should be that way.
