Leaving apart the answer to "heylama2" -excuse me, it was a joke-. Now I want to know a detail: Can someone tell me what kind of Gibson Bass does Prescott play? Thank you in advance.
These guys looked like four upperclassmen from the Alpha Epsilon Pi house at the University of Illinois circa 1980. Such a pity that cancer got both Mr. Fieger and Mr. Gary, both apparently leaving no wives or children. Their lyrics were frequently not acceptable, but they prided themselves on their musicianship and BOY could they blow away anyone I'm hearing in that department in American music today.
@megafan31 It's not the same song. Doesn't even sound like the same song. You've been sucked into the 3 decade old feud they've had with critics who also think the album cover of "Get the Knack" looks like "Meet the Beatles." It's four guys on an album cover. Been done a million times.
@SuperDachshund I'm gonna list all the bands I know who've done that just for shits and giggles. Montrose, KISS, all the Beatles' albums, and that's all I can think off lol.
i had a girlfriend like this once. where can i find another.p.s. she had a girlfriend too....man they rode me hard and tried to put me up wet! but i wanted more!!
I have always thought the album cover for But The Little Girls Understand was COOL because we don't know what the girl in the picture is looking at! The moon? etc.
I was about 12 years old when this track was released as a single. Of course, I ran to the record store with my brother immediately to buy it. And I already had the "Get The Knack" LP!!! ; D
The summer of 1979 had a lot of great memories for me. Elvis Costello. Joe Jackson. Devo. Talking Heads. Nick Lowe. Dave Edmunds. And of course, The Knack. The group that killed disco!
Great song! I liked it better than "My Sharona." People think it's the same riff, but it's actually completely different. One of the best all time rock-n-roll bands ever! At least they could play their instruments!
Not too many people know Doug Fieger was in Triumverate, a progressive ELP-type of band, and Bruce Gary was in Jack Bruce's band, a total fusion-type thing, the bass player, Prescott Niles, was originally Niles Prescott, in a bunch of early '70's bands. I saw Doug in the Sunset Bombers at the Starwood.
...don't tell me...this must be the follow up to my sharona. the classic line-up of the songs of the 80's: 2 almost identical songs followed by a ballard.
One of many songs that was popular for about 3 months and everyone forgot about it (except us few who check it out!). I still have this song on a 45 RPM. Also "Good Girls Don't" is an excellent song. Unfortunate that "My Sharona" is th only song associated with the Knack today, though it is a good song, too.
"Back in the day", this tune was considered to sound too much like "My Sharona" and, as a consequence, didn't get as much airplay as it probably deserved. And the Knack was considered by many to be a One Trick Pony and thus ignored.
The Knack were great...very tight band. But the only thing Fieger didn't realize about a song like this is that he had zero sex appeal visually for a song like this to work. There were other things that sank the Knack ultimately, but if you are going to be so blatant about fetish sex in a song, you have to back it up with something other than goofy faces and groans.
The something other would be what Fieger couldn't do - have the camera focus or switch to a different visual other than himself. A hot girl comes to mind. Now I realize that videos were in their infancy at this point and in hindsight the solution looks simple, but that would have been the "something other".
Well put. I've been listening to their first LP a lot lately, and I'm just struck by how brilliant the songs and playing are. If Fieger had been a more compelling front man, and their lyrics were a little less obnoxious they could have been one of the greatest bands ever (well, they also seemed to run out of top material pretty early in their career too...)
agreed...the first LP is phenom....they were so tight during the recording that they basically played the sucker live and had it in the can within a week I think...
I was working at a big chain record store (a nearly by-gone entity, these days) when The Knack broke out! They were HUGE and we sold a ton of the records and even more 45's ( all you young 'uns who are clueless can Google
"45 rpm")! They were even hailed as "The Next Beatles",
Well, THAT never came to pass, but EVERY song on 'Get The Knack" is awesome...great lead vocal, tight harmonies. wailing guitars and a driving beat. Cool!
True, this song is from BTLGU. Sorry if my remark seemed misleading to you about which album this somg was from.
My mention of "Get The Knack" was in reference to my comments about their debut album and how every song on it is a true gem. While the songs on their follow-up album - BTLGU - were generally very good, not EVERY one was as stellar as those on GTK.
I remember this from april-may 1980 when me and my buds used to hang around mcdonalds and get drunk in the parking lot sitting in my buds mercury marquis.
Like the song...always have BUT if some band would re-do, update and remodel this song I think it would be a great choice. Solid bones but was never fully fleshed out. The fact it wasn't a hit will work in your favor because few people would associate your version with theirs. Trim the fat, add percussion and some counterpoint (third verse begs for it) and BOOM!
The Knack hit #38 in Billboard, 3-15-80. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! RIP and Shalom, Doug Fieger!
