do you use this method for all the clubs in the bag? From wedge to driver? And does it count for the full swing only or also for the punch, pitch, chip and lob shot?
Hi Shawn. I feel that club manufacturers are doing the average golfer a disservice by selling lighter clubs, both in terms of total weight and swing weight, in order to increase sales by marketing faster swing speeds. Trying to feel the whipping action you describe can be elusive with the lighter clubs. I think that clubs with greater total weight and more heft would allow one to have greater feel and could make it easier to produce a more effective swing and better contact. Do you agree?
@thehappyroman1 You Bet!! I play with the heaviest shafts (Dynamic Gold) and they still could be heavier! Obviously, there comes a threshold where the weight would be too much to handle;
There should definitely be a heavier shaft out there for those who want to swing easy and carry a heavy stick! :) Shawn
@clemshaw Now that I have re-watched your downswing weight shift and power sequence drills videos, I have better feel, even with lighter clubs. Working on your drills has helped me feel like I am loading the entire arm-club unit, of which the club is obviously a tiny part. I know what you mean about the dynamic golds. I was swinging one of my old Titleist irons (circa 1985) the other day and couldn't believe how heavy it was.
@thehappyroman1 U BET MAN ! go for blades /w heavy shafts !!! even I am a begginer golfer I really enjoy the feel of heavy blades!! these clubs force you tu swing and play better, cos they let you immediately know if something is wrong!
Hey Shawn! I love your stuff, I use your vids all the time to learn since I'm trying to become a good golf teacher. I have had forward press in my adress for a long time. I want to know if you like it or not and more important: when I press the club forward my club face seems to be open, some people told me that it's impossible to be consistent with that, but it feels for me that it's only open because of the press, but would be square if taking a neutral position. what do you think?
@danic18 Well, the key here of course is to be dynamically square through the hit; what you see at address is pretty much useless; check out "golf pro lesson weak grip or strong grip" and "golf pro lesson strike it pure" part 1 and 2; and you will get my drift! Shawn
Hey Shawn, great explanation of these down swing nuances. I'd like an additional clarification during the 'skip' or 'whip' portion. I realize from your youtube and DVD that gravity and axes is directing the arms and club. But sometimes I feel like I contract the shoulder and arm muscles as you would using a sledge hammer during the 'whip' - as if trying to crash through hard. Other times I consciously relax my arms letting gravity right their path, but this seems less powerful. Any advice?
Dude!! Very important question!! Very important answer here: Go to the "golf Pro Lesson Grip awareness" video; how firm would a tennis player's grip be through impact with a power forehand or a boxer at impact with his fist? Your instincts are always right in this case! The grip pressure will firm up big time through impact as there is the equivalent of 1 TON OF PRESSURE WITH DRIVER AT 100 MPH PLUS!!! See my videos on grip too "Grip 2 wrist hinge" and "proper grip"...Shawn
Hey shawn, thx again for your great talent to explain golf in a easy manner.>>>>Ive been hiting the the ball very well at the range but i dont really make those long nice appearing divots. Is that ok>? or should i apply divots during practice?
Is there any specific reason why you use the frisbee throw analogy solely for lefthanders ? I am a righthanded golfer (althought i can remember I wrote left in my first schoolyear, back in the fifty's). I feel that my left arm is doing the job in the downswing (frisbee like). Any overemphasing of powering from my right arm leads to stray shots (mostly hooked, some pushed). I once tried a lh 8 iron on the driving range, but this felt very, very awkward
See if you can't feel the swing as a "one unit swing from the shoulder sockets down to the club head; see "Golf Pro lesson Ball bearings and sockets" as well as the "Golf Pro lesson Nike Heavy Gloves" part 1 and 2; Shawn
Shawn. I always use the skipping stone. But I found myself on the back swing tilting my right wrist on the back swing more right and really really opening that club face. I hit a couple shanks. When I placed the club down and opened it up a bunch wow does the hossle really get closer to the ball. My question is. Can opening the clubface a bunch on the back swing actually cause this? :)
Sounds like you are manipulating the club instead of swinging the big unit; see the comment response of kenaOangin; and then see "Golf Pro Lesson golf swing medicine" "golf pro lesson momentum toss" part 1 and 2" and "golf Pro lesson Takeaway and starting the swing"! Shawn

my names hank and im afraid ive lost the love for the game. im a 6 hndicap and i play for score not for fun. i play to tell my friends, hey i shot 34 today. thats what i do. i was even having more fun when i was a 30 hdcp. im 15 ears old as well. any suggestions. and if you say take a break from the game, that aint happenin :p
i,m a lef handed person who plaqys golf right hande,,is that a positive or negative ...and why do ido that ...cheers shaun..love the videos,,just so logical
Have a look at my "Golf Pro Lesson right or left?" video and it will give you some insight; I love swinging in both directions as you will see from many of my videos like in the "100 episode from Pinehurst" video...Thanks for the question and all the best! Shawn
Hey Shawn...say (for example) if I were to give you a thumbs up, that would be a 12:00 analogy. During the backswing, should my arm and wrist (and thumb)rotate backward to 9:00 and then rotate back to 12:00 on the downswing and on to 3:00 on the follow through? Or...should by arms stay at 12:00 in relation to my body and let my body turn the club? Thanks.
This is a lot of positional thinking man! The swing is way too fast to be thinking this way; start be watching the perpetual motion drill video and then go to "Takeaway and starting the swing", "arm motion", "taut swing Philosophy" for the baseball comparison; also, keep in mind that the follow through will change depending on the shot (high, low, fade, draw), club lenth, lie (ball above and below feet, uphill and downhill) Your central nervous system does it all!
Thanks Shaun for this video. Being right hand dominant the stone skipping analogy works for me. I tried the frisbe motion with my left arm but it is but weaker than my right. The net result is I get poor results. However, when I have the short club in my hands for chipping and pitching the frisbe motion works very well.
Excellent vid again shawn! Small question: I know I am supposed to start the downswing with my hip. However, it often gets to fast vs. the hands then. If I only concentrate on starting and accelerating (the downswing) with my hands, I seem to get a much better shot. Interestingly, video analysis shows that my hip still starts first. Could it be that certain players get better rythm when focusing on starting the downswing with the hands? It also seems to increase my clubhead speed ...
hi shawn, if i was to use the skip stone analogy, then what's the role of left arm play? some pro say pull down hard with left, others say hit with right.. which way u advocate? i having hard time to pull with left honestly but it seem if i hit hard with right, i tend to be flippy at impact.. pls help..
You need to use your dominant hand to do this; but this will happen when you are focusing on assisting the momentum with a pulling action with the dominant hand; if it is the right, then so be it! You CAN pull through with the right side!! Watch "Right or Left Hand?", "Leverage Power", "Through the ball" and "Power Sources" videos
Shawn, you are the best. Would please consider doing a video on why some of us can hit a 7 iron 200 yds. and only hit a 3 iron 210 yds. The ratio of club/yardage does not hold true for me and some of my friends.
hi shawn.. i watch the recomended vids n tried out at range.. results are mostly good.. i can struck the ball more solidly.. all my irons are going high and with slight draw.. but i do realise they are travelling shorter.. normal 8 is 140yds, but its less thn 130 now.. y is it so..?? n i swear i'm striking the ball more solid than ever.. funny.. lol.. thanks..
