Really cool battle. Romans...erhhhm, Byzantines I guess, are my favorite faction in medieval II. The medieval Romans are probably my favorite period of history period. Glad to see them give it to the Turks!

Byzantine Infantry are *not* "throw-away" units, having the Byzantines be one of my favourite factions I use the as the backbone of my army. I've rarely lost with them, too!

the Ottomans are perhaps the based ranged faction, while the Byzantines perhaps the best melee. so by default you had the advantage, as both cavalry and range is pretty much negated in a siege battle, unless you insist on fighting on the walls(which neither of you has). also your opponent wasted way too much money on his cavalry, which is very useless inside city walls. that's the main reason his numbers were so small compared to yours, and why he lost despite a money advantage.

From my experience the heavy infantry should hold the walls while your spears should hold the gates, if your enemy has a battering ram, of course. Heavy inf on the wall can rout any unit pretty quickly, simply because there is lots of armored dudes and the enemy's soldiers come one at a time, and Spears can destroy any cavalry that comes through the gate while being able to slow down enemy heavy infantry for long enough.

Well, that is what I do in M2:TW, it may work for you differently. :-)
