I would definitely gift my left one to be there, somewhere in the front preferably, to see them do this. This is mind blowing music. The likes of which we will never see again.
I was saying about the same for years, this belongs to the past forever and it's behind us forever and then in 2000, these guys have been waiting for me to be in america to start touring together again! ;) and I had the hudge bliss to see them on stage, that night Down by the river was one of the highlights, Neil's torn moaning sent me goosebumps the whole song. They kept playing for three and a half hours, my longtime dream was there.
Me and my pops used to rock out some air guitar to this song on his over powered JVC at 3 in the morning. This is my favorite song of all time. I played it at full volume 2 hours after he passed away and felt nothing but joy as his spirit sat next to me. "This is usually a really long song folks. And we're gonna do it real slow tonight"
back in the day in the early 70's ,neil young was an icon,we dressed like him, patches on our jeans, work boots---boondocks,flannel shirts, shoulder length hair, neil was the man,it was all about the music
"Skynyrd understood Southern Man very well, the song is very generalized, not all southern men are guilty or have anything to repay."
Actually, producer Al Kooper, who knew both sides in the Southern Man- Sweet Home Alabama controversy, brokered the Skynard reference to Neil, who thought it was funny.
How do I know? I was alive then and heard a radio interview with Kooper while I was in Miami trying to score 'lombo Gold !
In this song, as in many others, Steve and Neit engage in extended guitar battles as their egos often clashed, beginning in the old Buffalo Springfield days. Listen carefully and you can hear them doing something like, "You think that was good, watch this!"
we always have these fools that want to be recognized for being born before 1960 and have been there? why? who cares? so was I....I don't need to glorify it...it's not only them....we have all sorts of jerkoffs that think their opinion matters....listen and enjoy
I was around when this album came out and critics panned it! Have worn out albums, tapes and cd's of this and it will always be one of my favs . Represents the wonder years of my life growing up in S.F. with fabulous music all around - growing up with the best people ever. Love was in the air.
Born in 1957...I along with the late Ronnie Van Sant hated the lyrics the "Candian" Neil spewed against some of my Southern brothers...The music overcame it all and all was forgiven...I was priviledged to have spent some time with Ronnie and other members of Skynnrd before that GOD DAMN plane crash.A couple of weeks before after a concert in La. at their after party at the motel...I asked Ronnie about Neil and the song...Ronnie said, all no hard feelings to Neil, it just fit Sweet Home right.
@1stSaintsFan At first do Ronnie the justice of spelling his name right it's Ronnie VanZant and as well spell their group name right it's Lynyrd Skynyrd not Skynnrd moron I dough you spent one minute with them and if you really did then shame on you for fucking up their name asshole...
@01skynyrdfan01 ...Drunk while typing Prick..Sorry I am an original fan..01...What are you a past groupie that got chained butt-fucked by the band...I bought the first LP brand new turd topper...first show I saw band live was Oct 73 , then 75, 76 and 77...Was security shotgun driver for Ronnie's car after show..He bummed beer and joints from us and invited us to his motel for the afterparty...He was broke and pissed off because of no money...I met them and party with them all...Free Bird !
Yes,'very aware that they were friends, remeber these songs were written in late 60's early 70's when the views of the culture were quite different and Neil was quite poignant in his commentary. Love all these artist very much, they have written many a Great songs. Four Way Street was one of my favorite albums for many years and still is very near and dear to me; Lee Shore, Find the Cost of Freedom, Black Queen, The Electric side ROCKS! Beautil mix of blues, rock, harmonies. Just Good music.
I have a Great Deal of respect for the individual memebers of Lynyrd Skynyrd, May the now passed RIP and the survivors live long and Happy lives, But Neil has the Balls to speak a truth no one wants to hear and that commands a whole other level of respect. Truth is what it is.....
@alexbruce9 Four Way Street was made from recordings of various concerts, so having video footage of all these songs would have a been a pretty huge undertaking in 1970. Skynyrd understood Southern Man very well, the song is very generalized, not all southern men are guilty or have anything to repay. Sweet Home Alabama was almost a comedic retort, the whole thing has been incredibly overblown by idiots thinking there was any sort of animosity between the bands.
Why is there no video to this concert anywhere..... I grew up with this album, Love this song in ways Lynyrd Skynyrd would never understand, Neil at his (1 of many best) saw them in concert 3 years later performing this and it was not the same, Good to say the least but not this...... A Southern Man.
Neil's unique musical style coupled with his insights on life and the boldness to speak out should inspire all of us to go against the grain when necessary.
I got out of the Marine Corps in 79 and gave away about 150 albums because I thought it would be too hard to carry them home to Cali from Hawaii. I figured they would be easy enough to replace. Been looking for this ever since. Just as well though? Most of what I've listened to that has been transferred to digital just doesn't sound as good as it did on vinyl in stereo. Glad I stumbled onto this today. There's a ton more great music like this out there that you just can't find anymore.
This music makes me wish that I was part of my dad’s generation. If they thought that Disco sucked back then, I bet they never would have dreamed that today’s music could suck as bad as it does.
I am from Massachusetts and I was stationed down south and I thought thought that the southerners were warm generous people. They liked to party and so did I. Thumbs way up to the South !!!!!!!..
@crazyasssurferdude You look like a northern cultureless american redneck to me. Just saying someone is a redneck means you got no brains in your head. The south will rise again.
@drugUros Soooo...since you called him a redneck, that means you don't have brains in your head. Good hypocricy. Way to prove why the south WON'T rise. Too stupid.
i remember seeing the movie with this song omg it was so strong with the KKK riding horses on the beach chasing a black man in shackles down.it brought tears to my eyes could anyone tell me the title of the movie?thanks
Average at best....is that with you head up your ass or out.....wait....with your comment being that ignorant, it really doesn't matter.....stick with Nirvana!!
I can only add to the glowing comments already posted. This is the best album of this genre I have ever heard. More specifically Southern Man. This version eclipse all others. I have searched for it in all the wrong places. Thank you YouTube very much. This makes my everything feel better. WOW! This is the best JAM I have heard ..what a collaboration. MAN OH MAN!
groups don't sell out...they just make music. they make music that lots of people like, and get paid for it, hopefully.
we are the sellouts....the millions of people that buy crappy music, because the radio station brainwashes us, or MTV convinces us these people are cool.
the problem with the music industry is.....the customers that will buy crap, just to be cool and trendy.
c'mon...who the hell said sellout? the 70's early 80's were a great time...albums like this, Zeppelin, Warren Zevon, oh and I should mention the Doors, and all of the southern rock bands...and what about Zappa?, did he ever sell out?...just cuz one or two "names" went commercial doesn't mean that the entire music world sold out...the 60's-70's and for all intents and purposes the very early 80's were the best times...I grew up then, believe me
I am twenty years old, end everyday i ask myself why couldn't i have been born earlier so i could have grown up in the seventies to see these great bands perform live.
@zackherskovitz agreed... but the 70s generation sold out big time, to corporations... we have to go underground to find some real music and the minute it starts to make money, it magically turns into shit. 70s was about 2 many drugs, not enough fighting the man. They all had their fun hippie one-world era, and then got their comfy jobs working for the man, leaving the mess for the rest....Thanks!
I've heard better versions...but this one's still great!!.."Southern man...when will you pay them back.....Southern man better keep your head...Don't forget what your Good Book said.......Southern change gonna come at last......now your crosses are burning fast.".........Classic lyrics.... & song.....
quite simply one of the best albums of all time, still have this on vinyl my original purchase 40 years ago, put this through on a decent set of set of speakers, crank up the vol, and wow, an object lesson in how to record live music.
I traded a allman bros album called eat a peach back in 1970 to my buddy for 4way street never considered it a bad deal because I like eat a peach or most anything from allman bros too not much music back then I didnt like.
one of my friends "borrowed" this album from his brother in 1969. Never heard anything quite like it back in the day (I was only 9) and couldn't get enough of it. Still have it with all the crackles and pops
I know this comment will attract some haters, but I can't help but look at CSN as just another backing group NY used. They never played so well as when he was with them, and their songwriting, IMO, was nothing compared to him either. They are amazing musicians, but they only seemed to reach their full potential when Neil drew it out...
I saw them in Kansas City in the summer of 1974. I was hoping they would play this, but they didn't. The only possible reason I can think of is that they were on the same bill with the Allman Brothers (and the Beach Boys), and opted not to play it out of deference to them.
@jazzgirl232 It certainly was, and I still find hard to believe I paid just $18 for the ticket--for three big-name acts. Even adjusting for inflation, it was a bargain.
Oh man, this is such a good version of the song, I mean how tight is the band in this recording? Especially when they return to the chorus right at the end! Mind blowing!
FINALLY! The absolute best version of this song, with over the top guitar playing by the group! Very few songs even come close to the energy put out here. Thank you times eleventy billion for posting this!
@dreymeek the lead guitar and drummer are thoroughly annoying throughout this tune and the harmonies don't make sense over "How long how long".. Neil is perfect as usual - the rest sound like stoned hippies... FAIL
I have bought this LP so many times and played it to death...thank goodness for CD's. Super cool

Oh man, this is such a good version of the song, I mean how tight is the band in this recording? Especially when they return to the chorus right at the end! Mind blowing!

Simply the best version of Southern Man ever produced. Brilliant is and understatement! A hidden gem? THE hidden gem!

FAIL

@dreymeek Yeah it's the best version for sure. Good one !!!!
