@thekilljoypotato sounds like the sugar hadn't melted or got hot enough. Make sure the butter and sugar are bubbling away for a minute or so before adding the milk.

Dear Sortedfood, I attempted this recipe today and when I was doing the icing it ended up more like glacé icing rather than butter cream icing. It was then too difficult to ice using an icing bag so I ended up just spreading the icing on. What do you think I did wrong to make it like that?

But as for the icing... if it does go a little too solid then just let it down to a piping consistency with a splash more milk. It's difficult to tell exactly as it will depend on how long you let the butter and sugar bubble for before adding the milk and then for how long afterwards.
@Bubblibee Cracking your eggs on the side of the bowl increases the likely hood that shards of egg shell will be sent inside the egg via the intruding bowl edge. Cracking your eggs on a flat surface GREATLY reduces this risk. Plus I just think it produces a crack that's easier to pry apart and less likely to crumble in your hands, but that's just me.

If you don't have a piping bag you can use a sealed zip lock bag with a corner cut off. You just won't get the pretty pattern.
