The only humor, which is to be expected in a comedy movie, is derived from the bizarre nature of Anna Faris's comment, and this was written to show how big of a disconnect there is between Seth Rogan and the rest of the world.
I understand your concern, but sometimes things are done for artistic reasons, and not simply to be offensive.
Just a tip, you may want to change the info part for this video and any others that have the Logitech QuickCam blurb. Because all you get in the related videos is stuff about the Logitech Quickcam.
That being said, I'm torn on this issue. You make a few good points, but on the other hand, it's comedy. Lowest common denominator comedy, maybe, but comedy nonetheless. It just seems not that there are bigger fish to fry, but you're going for the smallest fish in the pond.
Where do you think sexism comes from? Where do you think people get the idea that it's OK to rape women? They don't just pull it out of thin air. It is reinforced in movies like this. Sexism in the media is an important issue. It might be THE most important issue. It's where everything starts.
Yeah, and if she hadn't worn slutty clothing, or gone out on a date with a guy, or left her house, or had the stupidity to be born a woman she wouldn't have gotten raped either. I wouldn't be surprised if those were the things you told yourself in order to justify raping women, you sick fuck.
Anyone who can't tell what's right and wrong in that situation was fucked up well before they decided to let a funny movie decide for them, even though hearing what you said it doesn't promote date-rape in any way.
It's stupid to bitch at things because they "potentially might cause someone to do this or that", fuck, if you feel that way attack any movie that showed violence because "hurr durr viewers might think its OK after seeing it".
No. Violence is seen as much more black and white. People are taught very early on that it's wrong. I'm not totally absolving violent movies, but rape is different. As this video points out, a lot of guys (and girls) are very confused on what constitutes consent. This movie further confuses them by showing a drunk, unconscious girl giving "consent." Rogen even said in an interview that her drunken mumbling made the scene "OK." People don't need reinforcement on this awful idea.
So it doesn't promote date-rape why? Because she wakes up again? Not enough. You have to gain the magic word - consent, if you don't have it, it is rape.
Also, there are plenty of legitimate criticisms made of many violent movies. In order to make criticisms of one thing must one then criticise ever other bad thing in the world in order to make it legitimate?
wow, just look at all the rape apology here... not really a surprise being youtube XP
I'm really glad I don't go to these 'comedy' films. The US 90% of the time can't make anything I consider funny anyway so I'm glad I won't have to adjust my viewing habits in order to not see date rape portrayed as 'she wants it anyway so it's ok' wow, chuckles
It kind of bothers me that Seth Rogen is being singled for this when Anna Faris, too, agreed to be in the scene in question. Anna Faris was not actually raped. She consented to be in this scene which makes her just as guilty as Seth Rogen. They should both apologize as should the writer, director, and producers. They all share the blame equally.
That movie is absolutely disgusting. Remember, in a liberal/feminist world, people like Seth Rogen have a 1st Amendment right to produce filth like this. In a conservative world, this movie would be illegal and would not even exist.
David, in a conservative world, most of the rapes that happen would not even be considered rape, because the rapist was her husband or she didn't fight back hard enough. A conservative world isn't a hypothetical situation; it's already happened and it basically sucked for everyone who wasn't a macho, heterosexual white Christian male with money.
Can I be honest and say that I am not convinced? I am a staunch feminist, and I'm not sure that the distinction is so clear. We don't know what happened before the scene. She is quite drunk, yes. I have had sex very drunkenly, and it was not sexual assault.
I think what this shows is that consent is very complicated. If two people are very drunk, have sex, and consent isn't explicitly given, is it date rape? When I have sex, I don't explicitly give consent. It's not so clear cut.
No, were aren't sure if she is. She might have fallen asleep during, and she woke up during...it's not so clear. And he did look concerned that she was asleep or unconscious. I don't have any idea, really, I'm just saying that i don't know if we can judge it without more context.
I think there's a place for women's agency here. Do I think this is a feminist film, obviously not! Do I think this is poor taste? Probably. I'm just not sure it is promoting date rape.
If, as you say, this scene could be more complex then the trailer poses I think there's a bit of an issue in that the people putting the trailer together thought that this scene was so funny to include it in a trailer promoting the movie.
That in itself speaks volumes of how most of society doesn't take date rage seriously.
But she was obviously so drunk that she couldn't possible have given meaningful consent. Even if she agree to the sex beforehand, she was still out of her mind, and thus this is technically rape.
I think a central issue is, as stated in this video, that her consent (or not) is ambiguous, and that, being very drunk, she is not able to give clear consent. it seems that this scene glamourises such a situation as presents it as an ideal situation for young men to find themselves in, and this is very negative.
You're blaming the victim? Why is it that the only time we blame the victim is when a woman is involved? Why can men-myself included-get as drunk as we want but women are held to a different standard?
On behalf of men everywhere, I apologize for how incredibly oppressive my gender and patriarchy are.
Excellent video; I hope moviegoers stear clear of this lame attempt at comedy; just as you said, how would they feel if it was their mother or sister up there?
Nobody seems to like making comedy out of date rape, sexual assault, victim blaming, and real rape attempts like Seth Rogan and the people who helped make all his movies (superbad, this one, knocked up, anything else).
Just wanted to note that Seth Rogen is just an actor in this movie. It was written and directed by Jody Hill so he is the person to direct the criticism to.
I don't think it's that feministing doesn't have the guts to critique such issues. Hopefully most people are aware that actual date rape is not a good thing. However, there are potentially millions of people who will see this movie and think that scene is funny. Even worse, they won't consider it date rape at all. And that leaves the potential for people to reenact it without thinking they've done anything wrong.
Let me make clear that we absolutely agree 100% that turning date rape into comedy is NOT funny, and that we should make people aware that date rape scenarios NEVER play out like this.
That said, if Feministing does have the guts to critique fx FGM, trafficking, religious subjugation of women, etc, then why is it NEVER a video critisising these issues that pops up in my subscription section?
Thomas, Well, I guess I can't really say why they choose the topics they do. But they have talked about anti-choice issues, politics, LGBT issues (etc.). Do you ever check out their website? I know they have some articles about FGM, trafficking...
-Laura
P.S. I enjoyed your feminist/atheist video. I couldn't agree more! :)
She said we all know that Feministing is not uptight... correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure they made a vid saying fuck to a music festival in Texas...
...oh, and I would like whoever gives my rather respectful comment thumbs down to reply to me instead. We're all feminists here, and should be able to find some common ground.
If you'd actually visit their website, you'd see that they talk about those things ALL THE TIME. But I suppose trolling is more fun than actually researching.
I have been to their website, and it's all well and good. I even used to blog about the issues raised there. I did not say that the above video was not important in its own right; I am just saying that the topic of said video might not be the MOST pressing of all.
Besides, since they do blog about "those things ALL THE TIME" as you say, why is it NEVER that kind of video that pops up from Feministing in my subscription section?
I over'd the limit, so here I'll continue:
