I've the opportunity to borrow a cello for three years from a former cellist. I love the sound but most of all I love playing it. I'm in my 5 month of lessons and decided I better start searching soon for my own cello because I am sincerely hooked. I have a feeling my choice will take a while and my instructor has already agreed to help me choose when the time comes.
This is excellent advice! David's comments are not aimed so much at beginners and parents buying first cellos for children, though. In those situations I urge you to avoid shopping "blind" - instead, follow a teacher's advice. If you don't have a teacher, find a teacher first!
My problem is I live in a small town, and I've never played a cello, but with do have a community college close by. I don't have friends who play the cello and was considering to buy one online. What are your recommendations on the best online site to buy one? Or possibly Ebay could be best? I feel hopeless, please help.
I've been wanting to buy a cello for awhile now. I keep reading and hearing that I should take my teacher with me to choose, but I don't have a teacher. If I go into a store that sells them, should I try the people there on what they say is a good quality cello?
@white0nerdy , A good first step to finding a great cello is finding a really good cello teacher in your town, e-mail them and ask them where you can find a good dealer. These are some things I compared when buying my cello:
How it fits your body, how easy it is to play, sound quality (ex dark vs bright), change in color from lower to higher registers, etc. It's always a good idea to bring someone to listen to you because what you hear isn't necessarily what is sounds like to an audience.
Great Info! I have a modern German instrument. Over the last 15 years, I've noticed a gradual decline in sound. There is a hair-line fracture developing over the bass bar. Could this be the cause? Is there anything that help my "Bettsy"?

These are worth their weight in AAA Master Grade Spruce.
... which some people will acknowledge is worth far more than gold in the right hands.
For beginners, find something that interests you and appeals to you. A better looking instrument can have value if it helps you keep you active.
I learned guitar because I got an amazing deal on an amazing guitar.
I am buying a cello because I found one that I am excited about.
I stopped playing as a child because I got bored.
Fun is good.

I'm a bassist and a guitarist, and recently I've wanted to pick up the cello as well because I love it's sound.
Anyways, how do I know exactly what is a quality instrument?
Is there a certain kind of wood thats better than others? Is there a certain kind of string thats better than the others?
I've no experience with cellos, so any information I can get as to what is quality(aside from loudness, which you covered) would be appreciated. =)
