I liked the original series version of this scene better. More visceral, much more intense. With fewer lasers to boot. The fact that Unit 1 could take the angel's flesh to replace it's own arm was a clear indication to me at least that they were made of the same material.

This is the second part of the Rebuild of Evangelion series, the first one, "RoE 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone" was released in 2007 and the third part, "You Can (Not) Redo" will be released some time this year and the fourth part in 2013.
I like both Eva origins; tv series you had humans harnessing Eva without knowing what it is, rebuild they are repurposed or captured angels it looks like. Story wise I'm still a fan of both, it's like having a great house and just sprucing it up. Epicness is not lost in the reimagining. I cannot Waugh for 3.0 and 4.0

I definitely agree that the original version is far creepier, and in some ways better, but I have a different perspective. IMHO, Rebuild seems to be building to the point of taking all the complaints about the original eva ("why is shinji such a pussy?" "why wasn't there enough action?" etc. etc.), putting them in a setting where they play out, and showing how all those idealized scenarios all fall to shit.
This version of the fight definitely makes Shinji look a lot more bad ass, but I prefer the original just a little more. Watching Unit 01 eat Zeruel was one of the more disturbing things I'd ever seen (and heard). Everything about that fight just creeped me the fuck out.

That song with the drums and small piano "DUNG... DUNG... In the old version, when the angel sent his cloth hand thing, the eva also ripped it between her fingers. And yeah it was waaay more impressive to see the eva putting the arm back and devouring the angel at the end.
The way Eva 01 got its arm back and it going berserk were a lot more believable in the older version. Now it's just Super Saiyan, magic and laser eyes, goes to show how far anime fell over the years....
Gendo Ikari is so friggin' badass. He doesn't even care that he's covered in blood. And better yet are his planning skills: He got Asuka gravely injured in order to make Shinji resign from NERV just in time for the next angel to come and eat Rei (exactly as planned) so Shinji will rejoin and defeat the Angel, "unlocking" the Eva's godlike powers ready for Instrumentality. In his own words, "Just a little more until our project is complete." Oh my God, is this guy the SHIT or what?!
@hotelmario510 I sincerly doubt Gendo planned out all those events, to occur in that exact order, even in the original anime he acknowledges it was mostly chance that things played out to his favour.
@CaptHawkeye Exactly. He's a memetic badass. I was simply writing from a humorous perspective of his character, the same place from which "Gendo Ikari facts" and the "Gendowned" meme have risen. But in seriousness, it turns out he's an insightful examination of Rousseau's philosophy, that people are only evil when they are pushed towards it by their environment. The same goes for Shinji in the End of Evangelion, who in his own cowardice creates evil and injustice around him.

@BaronvonRichthofen He was more bummed that the EVA 01, which is based off of Yui's psyche when she was absorbed into it, was now rejecting him, rather than being upset that the Dummy didn't work, he was upset that EVA 01 was rejecting him personally, since it's decisions are influenced by his wife's psyche, so in a way, Yui was rejecting him.

@Dextiny "I am going to beat you and save my friend by RIPPING HER OUT OF YOU" is still up there. More so that Shinji's whole hearted desire to save Rei let him USE ANGEL POWERS. Imagine what went thought Zeruel's head when Shinji started breaking out moves only angels are supposed to be able to do. He then proceeds to utterly DEMOLISH Zeruel, punch a hole in the angel's soul and LITERALLY TEAR REI OUT.
And the best part? He succeeds. He doomed the world, but he succeeded.
That quota was filled with the remade Bardiel fight. Was made with 1006% more noms.
Besides, the Zeruel fight in Rebuild was that same concept. Except, you know, it required less than half the amount of synchro, it combined with an Angel AND a second Evangelion instead of just an Angel, and it casually set off a Third Apocalypse in the process.
Zeruel in NGE was almost the ending point. Here, it's the halfway mark. The shit hasn't even BEGUN to get real yet.
What the hell is all this glowy crap? The original kicked ass because of how visceral it was -- Unit 01 is a living being constrained by her armour and fueled by her desire to protect Shinji, and now she's awake and hungry and you're going to see exactly what that means.
As cool as all these new effect are, I find the original to be better. The way it roared and crawled and ate the angel showed it was truly a beast. A monster. Now this version merely shows it definitely made with angel DNA. Cool, yet not as cool.
@kagenohyou I'm with you on a number of those, but in particular the original series - used to have the VHS - had cooler roars for EVA-01 flipping out like a Viking. It sounded way more animal than the later ones - even the platinum-edition of the original series changed that. It's a pity.

But in seriousness, it turns out he's an insightful examination of Rousseau's philosophy, that people are only evil when they are pushed towards it by their environment. The same goes for Shinji in the End of Evangelion, who in his own cowardice creates evil and injustice around him.

@BaronvonRichthofen He was more bummed that the EVA 01, which is based off of Yui's psyche when she was absorbed into it, was now rejecting him, rather than being upset that the Dummy didn't work, he was upset that EVA 01 was rejecting him personally, since it's decisions are influenced by his wife's psyche, so in a way, Yui was rejecting him.

Unit-01 behaved exactly like that - a primate, devoid of any human wants or needs, moving specifically for the sake of survival.
She then proceeds to do what any animal would to a prey - eat them.

That quota was filled with the remade Bardiel fight. Was made with 1006% more noms.
Besides, the Zeruel fight in Rebuild was that same concept. Except, you know, it required less than half the amount of synchro, it combined with an Angel AND a second Evangelion instead of just an Angel, and it casually set off a Third Apocalypse in the process.
Zeruel in NGE was almost the ending point. Here, it's the halfway mark. The shit hasn't even BEGUN to get real yet.

As cool as all these new effect are, I find the original to be better. The way it roared and crawled and ate the angel showed it was truly a beast. A monster. Now this version merely shows it definitely made with angel DNA. Cool, yet not as cool.

@kagenohyou I'm with you on a number of those, but in particular the original series - used to have the VHS - had cooler roars for EVA-01 flipping out like a Viking. It sounded way more animal than the later ones - even the platinum-edition of the original series changed that. It's a pity.
