It was seized by the East India Company from the kaitalya kings.and became part of the British Crown Jewels when Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India in 1877. It was traditionally known as Shyamantha-mani and later Madnayak or the King of Jewels, before being renamed Kohinoor in 18th century by Afghan Ahmad Shah Abdali.Sure it changed hands a lot but it never left Andrapradesh or its rulers until the british came.
If only people would not get so emotional without really studying their history. Babur 'acquired' it from another ruler after battle and so on. The diamond changed hands many times and was purchased and then presented to Queen Victoria. Lets say it was returned to its original owner, who would that be? Then what would happen? Stuck in a museum? Better it comes out on a crown from time to time after all it is just a shiny rock.

Meh. British people and there royalty. Having to own this diamond is a cheapsteak. Despite the fact that Britain is responsible for 2/3 of the worlds diamonds they just have to keep it. Give it back to the Persians!
I can't believe the royal family still insist on keeping this diamond. It's not theirs, they stole it from India. But it's so convenient for their inbred brains to overlook that, isn't it?
koohinoor originated from india, but belonged to the persians, from there it was stolen by the russians i think, n somehowended up in the british crown jewerles

Indians should be aware that possession is 9/10's of the law, like Jammu & Kashmir for instance

Hi! I was wondering if you knew, how I could find out if I have a herimer diamond or an Indian diamond? I was told, it might be one or the other.
