Many things are said to be impossible to learn from a book, but I think that has something to do with the fact that today virtually everyone can publish a book, and the really good ones are getting drowned in trash, and secondly that in order to read any book, you must be a good perceiver as well.
A teacher can watch the students reactions, questions, personal background as a base of dialogue. Books can be carefully chosen and have its pages turned according to the reader. No difference
I have been practising the Transcendental Meditation-technique since I was 13 and in all these 35 years I never missed a meditation - that tells the whole story: if a young kid could like to practice a meditation technique regularly it shows, that the technique works: it makes Your mind clear, creative and enjoyable, keeps Your body health and effective, and even reflects on Your social network... . TM simply is wonderful because its so easy and at the same time so practical :-)
One thing I know is that I still haven't learned how to meditate correctly by watching these videos. So yeah, I'm going to look for an expert in my town.
How would you know if it couldn't be taught through a book if it has always been "traditionally" taught one on one? You paint a picture of it always being done one way, but in reality you don't actually KNOW that it couldn't be taught any other way. A well written guide or good DVD could cover most of what people encounter. Despite each person's uniqueness there isn't an endless list of "problems" that people could encounter.
@19justme51 mayb it can b learnt from a book, but nearly everything is best taught through experienced/knowledgable tuition, a golf swing , skateboarding tricks, theres a good reason ppl aren't allowed 2 drive on the strength of having only read a book on how 2 do it i mean u pay alil money 4 the tuition, but the method is what u learn and u keep it 4 life. (conversly mayb its just a way of sucking money out of something thts esentially really fucking simple) guess wont know til do it.
