I bought this camera yesterday man the pictures are amazing and so is the video I love the large lcd screen this beat out my Casio Exifilm camera (which broke after 6 months) this is my first canon ever and I am very impressed

The CHDK firmware is coming. CHDK is saved onto the memory card. You make the card a bootable disk(people can help you at the CHDK Wiki site) and switch the card to 'lock'. It gives you more power over the camera including USB remote capture, and exposures up to 64 seconds for taking pics of the stars. It has lots of other features that Canon has left out. I have a working version that you can get from CHDK Wiki. Look it up

I am fortunate to own both the 790is and 870is and would give a detailed comparison. First in terms of picture quality, sharpness and color both looked exactly the same. Build quality 790 is better because it is sleek and rigid with metal body. Lens quality 790is is better because of the wideangle lens and 3.8x zoom. Feature is the same but the 870is has better screen color and resolution. So I would go for the 870is if I were to choose between the two.

It can zoom digitally, but no optical zoom while recording.

I dont get the difference between optical and digital. Do you mind explaining? It'll be very helpful =)

Optical zoom is when the lens actually moves closer to what you're trying to shoot. Digital zoom is not really getting closer to the object, it's like looking at a picture and blowing up a certain part, though it will be more pixelated and fuzzy. Optical zoom is like actually moving closer to the object, but digital is like using a computer to zoom. Also, the high-megapixel cameras we have now capture more pixels and let you zoom in more using real pixels.

In other words, don't use digital zoom

I got the SD870 which is a bit cheaper and has a 28mm wide angle lens. This one has a better build quality though.
