Paulie was waaay too hotheaded at the most inappropriate times. He unneccessarily provoked Valery the Russian by dropping the televsion controller. It's like Paulie can't do a simple collection or have a simple conversation without starting a war.

Paulie is great as an enforcer and "wetworks" operative, but lousy as a negotiator and a conversator. I guess the lesson of the story is stick to what you know, and S-T-F-U!!!

And truth be told as harsh as it sounds, a guy like Ralphie was more valuable to Tony's organization. So if it came down to it, Paulie would have had to go.

I consider "Consigliere"to be a special rank, more like a "warrant officer" rank like in the Army & Navy. Warrant Officers are too be saluted like regular officers, but they don't necessarily fall into the order of rank like the Officers and enlisted ranks.

@willia3r i say its more like a presidential aid/ chief of staff. someone who is the leaders most trusted friend, great with strategy and can be in hard times someone who takes over part time. but consigleres also seem to be the #2 guy in the mob after the boss or 2nd in command. other times its an older mobster whose had a long life and out of respect has risen to the top of the family but will never achieve boss. so id say its a mix of the VP but with immense power & the leaders absolute trust

Paulie should've been a gambling addict. it would have suited his character; obsessive. Pretty much all these mob guys seem to be so used to violence and losing their tempers that it just happens on a regular basis. being so aggressive, they pretty much have to get into one serious stare-down a week, one beat-down a month, one fistfight every 3 months, and whack somebody every 6 months. otherwise, they would feel lose and have an existential crisis.

It is never actually mentioned on the show, but their is no other position he could of had. Chris was made capo, it says so in season 6 ep. 1. Paulie was still in the family and their is no new crews. His promotion to underboss was out of respect and seniority, but it was a marginal promotion, he really worked his own way. By season 6 pt2 Bobby is Tony's main guy next to Sil. Although Paulie was officially higher then Bobby, New York realized that Bobby was the important one, so they killed him.
