thanks for posting this, what a flashback ! I left Independence in 1987 with my mom and brother and sister to move to Arizona, I havent been back but am planning a long overdue trip!
@alnewberry Me either, i'm going later on today!!! i can't wait to go on my favorite ride..The Wipe Out...and eat a funnel cake, i don't have much money, but what we do have we're using up there, because we're only going today...
I love walking up to the square with my friends and just watching a movie or getting some ice cream. It's a nice place to walk around and it's a must see if you come to Independence. 2:07 acrooss the street is McCoy park..Used to be so fun as a child.
Oh yes, Independence Missouri, the city I grew up in and, beleive it or not, still live there. Not a bad city, but the city council could use a huge change.
Nice video. There's barely any Independence, Missouri vids on here. I miss it there a bit. It's different from where I grew up in... actually I grew up every where, especially Independence, MO. So it was nice to be in the city, and then move to Independence which happens to be so much calmer than the other states like CA, and HI. :P
there's also a rumor that they constructed the auditorium in the wrong location. i've heard it's supposed to be across the street like where the temple is.
i'd heard the theory a while back but couldn't remember exactly what it was. i think i just assumed it would be more critical to the church if they had built the auditorium in the wrong spot. because if the resurrection is supposed to occur in the dome it would be a big deal if the dome weren't positioned correctly. i wasn't sure how widespread that was but everyone i've mentioned it to knows kind of what i'm talking about.
The "return of Christ" to the dome is a myth. There are so many silly rumors out there with no basis in fact, it's not funny. The Temple built on the wrong spot would be more of an issue to those who know what they're talking about.
Many of those rumors were started by Joseph Smith, so consider the source. That was the same guy who wrote that the name 'Mormon' comes from English "more" + Ancient Egyptian "mon"! He only picked the place because it was 6 miles from the Indian frontier in 1832. The Old Testament describes a mountainous land, but that place doesn't look too mountainous at present. I've never been anywhere near Missouri, and even I know these things.
I don't know what your source is, but a lot of things are attributed to Smith that he didn't say--often by Young and others trying to gain support for their ideas. Smith's own wife didn't go with Young's group, but helped their son start the Reorganized church later on. I'm no longer actively involved with that church, but I still don't like to see misinformation spread.
The first one is definitely attributable to Smith. I can't really comment on the second though. My original comment referred to myths such as that Christ would return to the dome of the auditorium and such.

Actually, it was the temple which was supposed to have been across the street, between the auditorium and the Stone Church.

Source that location in Independence MO is considered the true "Zion": Joseph Smith, D&C 57:1-5.
Source that the name "Mormon" comes from modern English "more" and Ancient Egyptian "mon", which he claimed means "good": Joseph Smith, T&S 13:194.
If there is any misinformation here, I didn't originate it!

Well, I'm not done posting. Most of my week was spent by myself going out to places. I haven't posted the party footage yet. Much more to come.
