  • I used to keep one as a pet...I named him Swirlypuss....he was very dear to me...

But I had to let him go....Now he's probably dead...

    R.I.P. Swirlypuss

You were my first ever pet and true to nature friend

  • I have one cocooning right now, hope he lives a good life!

  • 2 days into the coccon I took him out. he was bald and confused. I put him in a clean jar with ONE leaf. he made this silk (spit it I think) and made a half assed coccoon with it but didnt use it, he fell off or something. then he curled into a ball on the bottom on his back on the glass and died. for 2 days.

2 days later I check and hes not dead!! overnight he turned into a soft yellow larvae. he loses his body/skull... its SOOO weird. they DO NOT need a cocon to turn to a moth!!

  • LOL @ "half-assed coccoon" he was prolly like "WTF man im trying to sleep...god damn it, not again!!!"

  • I found out the cocoons actually take all winter to turn into a moth, so the cocoon is really just protection. Really weird!

  • damn dude, thats soooo interesting. I never thought these would be so "cool".

and aricka, lol funny. he built one that looked like a spider had wrapped him up in web, they can make like web or silk or something. and the way they make their coocon is absolutely fucking amazing!!

sucks that it takes all winter, I was expecting to see something soon.

  • Yeah it is too bad. You might have tent caterpillars, they build webs.

  • nope. definately woolly bears. they build cocoons with their fur, then I peeled the cocoon open and put the bald caterpillar in a seperate dish, he had nothing to build a new cocoon with. one caterpillar spit himself a new silk cocoon. the other turned to a larvae right there on the glass floor, no cocoon needed.

  • Ah. Did it actually turn into a moth?

  • nope not yet. theyve only been in cocoons for 2-3 weeks. I heard it takes all winter though.

  • I saw one everyday going to school, but today I found him dead on the sidewalk.

    *tear* It was so sad!

    and life scaring :(

  • how do you find them can youpm me?

  • i have one but i need to know what thier main diet is and quickly, could you pm me

    ?

  • you feed them twigs and grass and leaves

  • i kept a wolly bear in a shoebox once. it lived for a long time, and it started 2 spin a cucoon...but while it was doing that it died. poor thing!! :(

  • Nope, they don't sting. :)

  • will someone tell me if they sting

  • so cute!
