I'd like to believe that Mado doesn't kill herself. After all, have you ever wondered why the background of the real world looks so... deserted? Even in her dreams. I prefer the theory that she wasn't ever awake. It would explain why her eyes were always closed, even in the "real" world. Instead of dying to her death, she woke up to reality. She collects all her agony to leave it behind as a way of "letting go." That's why there is no body & dream-like creatures were the ones to see her off.

@Nintendog97 I hate to think she killed herself because of her dreams, either wanting to live in them/they were nightmares. "The story of a girl who faced many tragedies in life, couldn't confront them, & died." Seems a little lame to me. At least give Mado a little more credit than that. If so many people hate the ending, why not create your own? Reject that reality and substitute it with your own - within the nature of the game, ofc. This way, the ending becomes more acceptable.

@KuroPuppeh I have read on Yume Nikki wiki that the cratures that saw Madotsuki off at the end somewhat resemle a lotus flower, which can symbolise purification - in this case hinting to Madotsuki's liberation from her nightmares, and possibly even her hikkikomori ways. To back your theory up further, it's not impossible to 'wake up' from a dream into another dream, esspecially if it's a lucid one. I'm speaking from personal experience.

@KuroPuppeh Yeah, when I'm dreaming and I realise that the first thing that comes to mind is to find a way to wake up, I rarely try to exploit the dream. So I rememer once when I tried to force myself to wake up, I actually woke up in another dream thinking it was reality...

@KuroPuppeh <_< No, it wouldn't explain why her eyes are always closed. She's japanese, that's what explains the eyes....look at Brock from pokemon. She jumped and is dead. Sad really, because there's not really much sense you can make from it, unless you can get the perfect interpretation of her dreams.

@BillytheIV And yet many other characters throughout the game have open eyes. I also don't see why you have to associate those eyes with being japanese... I find that a little rude. :S But, as I said, that's just my personal theory. The wonderful thing about Yume Nikki is that it's free to so many interpretations, even yours. No one can know what the game is truly about but the creator himself.

Sad theory I heard - when the jellyfish creatures come to view the bloodstain in the ending, it suggests that only the creatures from her dreams mourn her, yet they're the ones that drove her to madness and suicide in the first place.

A popular theory on why she kills herself is simply that she didn't have anything else to live for.

In her lucid dreams, she did everything she could ever want. In some cases, she may have even overcome her past issues, depending on how you interpret certain characters and events. Or, perhaps she was still haunted by them.

Either way, it's widely believed that, since even in her dreams where she has complete control she's done everything she could do, she has nothing worth living for.
