hello.. i've been playing guitar for 5 years but my alternate pick still can't function while do riff for the 6th and 4th string play... any suggestion?
question, someone answer please. This is a good exercise for the pick and I started our fingerpicking and got that down pretty good so now Im going to the pick. When doing this exercise I hold my middle finger back because I dont like my fingers im not using to hit the strings, but Im holding it back for so long it starts to hurt, should I be using another technique?
@theDailyDigest I'm having the same problem!! except with mr crowley!!!! I can practically play the entire thing but that!! please any1 who reads this please help
this is great, but i can't find any exercises for a specific type of picking! Such as when you're playing 2 strings and going back and forth really fast, how can you alternate pick the 2 strings fast without hitting the other string? like on the songs TBDM - The Blackest Incarnation, Black Valor
Hi there i'm having significant trouble trying to keep my left hand hitting the frets as fast as my picking, which im very fast at, the problem im having is that i think my hands might be too small, or my fingers aren't strong enough, could you offer advice? my middle finger is the longest at about 4-5 inches
@IllusionalGuitarist Well, your hands sound bigger than mine and I'm pretty comfortable with wide stretches and big chords. If your picking hand is faster than your fretting hand, slow it down to the speed of your fretting hand. Being synchronised is 1000 times more beneficial than having one fast hand and one useless hand. Start at a really low bpm and build it up gradually over the weeks, it'll be much more useful than trying to force one hand catch up with the other!
hey ok ive been playen guitar for 2 yrs n ive been looking up videos on sgredding n they said u shuldnt tense ur rite arm when tremelo picking n now i tense like a lil bit n sometimes a lot but how do u stop tensing ur rite arm cuz i feel like i cnt play guitar guitar anymore
@dc08bfmv Slow yourself down when you practise and don't move up the speed until you feel your arm is relaxed at that speed. Increase the speed until you can play at your desired speed with minimal tension.
Hi if i play the major scale from base string e all the way to the high e and i start on an up pick shud i be able to and can use an up pick on the next string from the one i just played?
Hey! i have a question...while i am picking, i dont know how to pick over different strings...is there a technique on moving among strings? please answer.
hey.. so i've been playing for a couple of months now. mostly i've been doing some chromatic exercises and pentatonics scales. but when i try play a major scale with 3 notes per string my alternate picking gets really sloppy so does my freting hand. any advise on exercises i should be doing????? i'm at a total lost dude..
my problem is i am used to economy picking.... so its hard now to make that stap from up down all the time.... just to practice this... ? lol... or just go on with EP
I have one question. I've been doing this 4 exercises for 7 days now. Each exercise for approx 15 mins, which is around 1 h total each day. I've came all the way to 169 bpm on first exercise and I was really careful about not playing it sloppy, playing it on clean channel, raising only 1 bpm and feeling comfortable while doing it ( no tension). But today I can't even play it on 160 bpm without tension and it's pretty sloppy as well. My forearm feels really worn out. What is your suggestion?
@P0tjeh You guessed it, your forearm is probably just worn out. Just give it a little rest and I am sure your speed will come back. Probably better than before. :)
@GuitarLessons365 I have one tip, or commen to this question ... you may try to start correcting your picking by using only your WRIST (I play like that) and the optimum thing would be doing what Malmsteen does ... minimum wrist + thumb movement ... that´s for me, the perfect right picking hand of the world (Respect to Paul Gilbert as well, of course)
i gotta do some srious stuff wut da technique, but i have speed !! I just miss the string sometimes, and stop practising couse of that ! What do you reccomend ?
@SGTkobiba I'm not sure if i understood you correctly .. but do u mean that u don't like the sound when u hit the string with angel ? If it's this - don't worry . I remember when i started , i hited the strings exactly perpendicular and when i changed to an angel , i really didn't liked the sound . But few days after i started to enjoy it and that's how I'm playing now :)
@NunoDuarte7 Hey thanks for watching. To answer your question, yes most of the motion should be coming from the wrist. Try to keep it loose while at the same time using as small of a stroke as possible. :)
Dude, ur amazing, I'm trying to start to play intermediate songs which invoke alternate picking and hopefully these lessons will help me out, thanks :D
@BvdLNL Hehe, well I am playing the hell out of it so hopefully within a few years it will start to have that worn in look I love so much on vintage strats. My strat has a nitro finish on it as well, so it should wear in nicely over time. :) Thanks for watching!!
Excelent lesson. I have been wondering since you play a strat, how do you avoid the volume knob with the paul gilbert-like grip you have? Could you do a video on pick hand grip and how to avoid the knob on strats like you do?
A real alternate picker should play this in any direction. Look at Michael Angelo Batio.
And you must be able to "pick inside the stings" to do this perfectly. Most players prefer one direction and disregard the other because it's very hard.
@katschrowski LOL "real", whats real? Anyone should play the way the feel the most comfortable by. I prefer shredding by avoiding the between strings and around the next string method and I have no problem playing the riffs I want. I even got twice as fast by avoiding it. :)
AND USE A METRONOME!!!!!! That is probably the most important part in building up speed! Learn how to use a metronome and you will get SO fast much quicker than if you didn't!
use a metronome. set the metronome at a very low speed, slow enough so you can do the pattern repeatedly with zero mistakes whatsoever (important).
once you've got it down VERY comfortably, add a couple of bpm to the metronome. the next day, go back to the original speed, get comfortable again, and do the process again.
even if you do this for a few minutes per day, you'll soon get more comfortable at higher speeds.
ive been really looking for something to help improve my 3 note per string major scales for shredding and this really helped me improve at it, thanks man
thanks....you have helped me...

looking at good quitar players, looking at paul guilbert and simply cannot believe it is possilbe!
XcortX1 2 months ago
cant believe it is possible!
i always get it as two fast 3-plets on each string and a clear lag when I jump over a string in order to keep alternating!
Why using alternate instead of economy in cases when it fits perfect?
Maybe using alternate as the only option available when you cannot use economy and develop a hybride style?
I mean, I am always late a bit, when jumping over a string to keep alternate.
Sometimes I even slightly hit the string jumped over, and it is not smooth at all
