legally t'ain't the Airplane without Grace Slick - this is a fine ensemble called Jefferson Starship courtesy of Paul Kantner and David Frieberg (don't dare request "We Built This City! lol)
Diana Mangano is no Grace Slick but she is a great singer. Listen to her do "Somebody to Love" and I think you'll agree. Although I think Grace is irreplacable, Diana fills her shoes pretty well.
accually its Jefferson Starship "Miracles", the song had nothing to do with jefferson airplane. they cant use 'jefferson airplane' without grace (legally). Marty sold out his share of the band he co founded
This is a fine group that stands on it's own. Ya it would be nice to have Grace, but she can't hit all the notes anymore and has retired from touring. Seeing these guys in smaller venues playing these intimate shows is a real thrill. BTW I saw them with Grace on the Earth reunion tour years ago, and this show was ten times better.
What got me when I first heard this song was I always thought it was a Jefferson Airplane song until I learned that it was made later on, in the Jefferson Starship years.
Man, this is one of those songs that just never leaves your mind or heart. I couldn't hear it enough back then. Once again, this is one of the video's I have been searching for and ecstatic to find it....Thank you to whom ever put in on here..K
I've got nothing against this, but the name Jefferson Airplane is erroneous---this is today's (2005)Jefferson Starship. No Jorma, no Jack, no Grace, NO AIRPLANE--get yer credits right, Mitch!
After posting my comment, I saw you being taken to task in other comments and saw your assertion about the bill--my apologies for gettin' on ya! By the way, "Have You Seen the Stars,Tonight" is one of the greatest songs there is. I love the studio original, featuring Jerry G. All the best Mitch! Peace.
Thanks, it was a real thrill for me getting to see them do the song and an even bigger one to be able to film it. The only other time I had seen the band was on the "Earth" tour, Balin was the only one sober and seemed a bit angry with it all. Also it was at The Coliseum and the sound sucked. This was a much nicer and more intimate show. I got a smile out of Kantner by shouting out a request for "Sketches of China" the only song I liked as much as this.
I saw the Airplane 3 times in '89. At the Fillmore, in SF, after one of the encores,Balin gestured at some of the psychedelic lighting on the wall, and said..."yeah, that was for my benefit." It was hilarious. That night he and Grace danced during "Miracles"; it was magic, and the final notes of the night were ROCKIN' as F**K as they ripped the roof off with an earsplitting "Volunteers"!! Rock on, Mitch.
That's Diana Mangano. She's not Paul Kantner and Grace Slick's daughter. She's from Buffalo. They're from San Francisco.Too bad the old Airplane isn't together anymore.
So, couldn't Paul and Grace have been on tour and left their love child in Buffalo? I'm kidding but it makes a good story.... fans of JA should check out the Grip Weeds for a similar sound.
I think the only band that comes close to these guys is probably The Grip Weeds and they're a way distant second to Jefferson Airplane in their prime. This was a very copacetic show and even the band seemed to be enjoying themselves. There'll never be another Grace and even Grace couldn't live up to the legend in more than a few shows that I saw.
I have this on my i pod and fall asleep to it sometimes..the passion for the song is not the same
maybe its just me but with headphones he sings it like its the only thing he wants to convey to whomever he wrote it for...i will stick to my i pod version this just blows it for me...
Things change, people change. They were together as the original Airplane at one time.....they all moved on, morphed and had to do life as it happened. Now there's this line up. Just enjoy it. One day it won't be here either. Plans go south and people die....its the way things work this side of heaven.....
You never step into the same stream twice. Last true "Airplane" music, or semi-reasonable facsimile thereof, were three post-Airplane albums released under artist name "Kantner, Slick and Freiberg" issued during the interim period before the first "Jefferson Starship" album. The evolution has been interesting. Different folks like different airplanes, and that's the way it will always be.
She's another one of the few who has mastered the art of contralto. She has turned a basic vibrato into an art form. Fine-tuning it into her fists of fury. Grace did that too. And that's why they sound similar.
thats not true for airplane sounding stuff listen to the grip weeds for classic rock there's mooney suzuki, dogs die in hot cars and a zillion more try listening to some of the new kids coming up the pike and go out to see some live music. i've got over 200 vids up and at least 100 of them are recent bands.... check out dr dog or prabir and the substitutes for a classic rock sound with some new material....
ok, point taken. The general taste of the bands were different. Airplane was psychidelia all around, drug songs and all that. Jefferson Starship was a masterpiece of love where blandness was the style. Starship was a botched version of a soul band, and the people here are kind of like ghosts. They keep hanging on, doing their thing. And they are so much better than Starship. I like Mickey Thomas, though.
Balin started Airplane but never fit in with them in their brilliant heyday. He won out in the end when Starship became an ultracommerical '70's-'80's corporate product. The genius of Kaukonen and Cassidy long gone by then.
Starship/Airplane who cares? They were touring as The Airplane so quit going off on me about it, take it up with the band. Got a smile out of Kantner when I screamed a request for Sketches Of China between songs, would have given a penny for his thoughts just then. If anyone knows if there's any video of them doing that let me know I'd love to see it. I knew there wasn't a chance in hell they'd be performing it, but I was happy as hell to get Have You Seen The Stars Tonight?
I loved Grace back in the day too but her voice isn't what it used to be. Diana was okay, nothing compares to Grace when she was on, but having seen her with the band, catching her at her best was a crap shoot.
Mickey Thomas tours with a band as "Starship Featuring Mickey Thomas." Paul Kantner owns the rights to both the "Jefferson Airplane" and the "Jefferson Starship" names. If he's with the band, he can call it whatever he wants to. That said, without Grace Slick, I'm not interested.
Great stuff. Saw them last fall in SF without Balin (David Freidberg of Quicksilver and Starship) sang. They do still tour, Balin is in and out of. They have a webpage with schedule if you google Jefferson Starship.
I posted what I thought was the best 2, will re watch and see if there's anything else worth posting. Blue Floyd opened the show and I have 2 of their songs up as well.
If they were billed as Jefferson Airplane then that is a mistake by the promoters or whoever organized the gig because they are definitely known as Jefferson Starship. And 'Starship' are a completely different band.
