The same thing happened literally across the street from where I lived 22 yrs ago in Tennessee. A backhoe operator punctured an underground gas line. It was early in the morning & we were still in our pajamas when firemen burst thru my front door & grabbed us. I heard a jet engine as soon as they opened my door & when I asked them "what is that sound?!" they said it's the gas rushing out of the ground. It was horrible & it DOES sound like a jet engine. There but for the grace of God go I... omg.
I know a guy that lives in this area, They left 10 min before the explosion; The residents of this area have been complaining of the smell of gas for weeks and PG&E put it off. And looked what happened!
These people made asses out of themselves automatically assuming it was a plane crash. No plane crash would cause this much devastation. The sound people heard was pressure building (and ultimately releasing) as fire (from an ignition point) rushed backwards from the point of ignition until the forward pressure of the natural gas caused it to build up, reverse course, and ultimately explode, taking the path of least resistance. Putting water on a high pressure natural gas line fire is useless unless you eliminate the fuel source by shutting down the line.
Also a fire this large generates an intense heat that can cause 3rd degree burns 200 meters away and more.
