  • That sounds amazing! I use GDAEA for mine (in constant fear of losing a finger!) but I still haven't quite got playing tunes down, just accompaniments. Beautiful.

  • tab? :)

  • Is this a cittern made by Stephan Sobel?

  • @novasscott , no, this Cittern was made by Paddy Burgin in New Zealand.

  • Beautiful, simply beautiful.

  • so is the tuning modal. dgdgd, or fifths, cgdae? or your own tuning?

  • where can i buy one of these online? ive been playing guitar for 10 years now and i love that mideval sound

  • nice!

  • This five-course beauty has got a nice and rich sound - thanks for this one, mate... :-)

  • Alguien sabe el nombre de este instrumento en español?

Somebody know the name of this instrument ins spanish?

    thanks! and great video :)

    (excuse my horrible english, hehe)

    saludos desde Brasil....

    RD

  • awesome

  • Makes me want to hit something with a mace! Celtic indeed. Well done.

  • Bravo!

  • what is the difference in a Cittern and an octave mandolin?

  • cittern is 10-stringed

  • ok thanks

  • Cittern's are also open tuned (I think)

  • They vary. I tune mine FCGDA because I am basically a fiddler. It works well for melody, but DGDGD, DADAE, DADAD, EADAE and others are also used and work better for chords.

  • wow

  • ancient instruments FTW~ Keep it up!

  • It ain't really ancient... More like 500 years old, approx.

  • And the modern instrument known as a cittern isn't the same as the original one. I mean I know that instruments change over the years, but this was invented in the 70s and didn't directly descend from the original.

  • good stuff man..

    keep it up!

  • we need a whole lot more cittern music in the world!

    Ted Green

  • I agree it's such a rich sounding instrument!

  • I'd love to learn how to play a Cittern, it's one of the most beautiful instruments I've ever heard. Unfortunately, I have little to no musical talent and even less money :(

  • i am so buying one of those

  • nickmartyn,

Thanks for the kind words. Sorry no notation. The tune was picked off of the Carrol/Doyle album by ear.

  • where can i get me one of those and how much will it set me back

  • gothmansam,

Sorry for the delayed reply. This cittern, a Burgin, will set you back between 2,500 and 3,000 US depending on how you want it built. Lark in the Morning has some good Irish Foleys for about the same although, having played both I prefer the Burgin. They also have some German built citterns in the 1,400 range although I can't say how good they might be. Their store in San Francisco is an excellent place to try one out.

  • thanks

  • Aicardi-Moore from Argentina build goods citterns and octave mandolas.

  • Uuuurk

Yes, this is an acoustic cittern with a built-in pick-up; this is played through a fender acoustic amp..

  • is this an electric cittern?

  • What a geat sound, very nice.

  • great :)

  • sorry for the delay in answering; the tuning is DAEAE. My friend who's playing had it made by Paddy Burgin, from New Zealand. We met him at a Luthier show last year.

  • Nice! What a wonderful sounding Cittern....An SOS I assume? I noticed the capo, what is the open tuning your using on it?

  • Lovely tune and pretty playing - thanks!
