  • i could see how this woukl work out well acoustically, fave band id say out of everyone that includes classic rock.

  • HAHAHAHAHA xD

  • Who else audibly giggled at Andy being scared of the lawn mower? XD

  • Kësaj i thonë t'i hysh barit me not...:)

  • This song reminds me SO MUCH of the Summer of 1967, in every way, shape & form. It's obvious Andy & Colin had a fondness for that day & age (in the same way Dream Academy did), and "Grass" remains one of my all-time favorite songs of theirs. I hear it, close my eyes, and remember that magic summer when I was 12-going-on-13, and everything was just magical in the truest sense...thanks mostly to the music. Wow.

  • so good..

  • Andy shouldn't argue with anyone about music. He can't make any music I would listen to.

  • And Partridge looks absurd (as he does) but this song is proof that you don't need to smoke.

A Colin Moulding song. We needed more of these.

  • the home demo is way better

  • Is it just me or does Colin Moulding look a bit like George Harrison in this video?

    Ha, symmetry....

  • XTCの曲でいちばん好きな曲でありPVです。

    コリンに戻ってきてほしいです。

this is the most favourite song and promo vid of all theirs.

i want Colin to come back again.

  • I love it! Never saw the vid before, but always thought this XTC song was a cover of a 60s number. Don't underestimate XTC. They're one of a kind

  • No, Skylarking is Definetely THE best produced and written album that XTC ever worte, you have to admit it. Their earlier album's songs were all similar, but in THIS one, every song is its own diverse masterpiece.

  • Thank Todd Rundgren for the production value of Skylarking - but I think that he and Andy P had a few good arguments during the making of this record

  • @blastmir All versions of Skylarking released so far were manufactured wrong, They're all out of phase. Andy is working on a re release of Skylarking on vinyl that will be in phase and it'll sound much better.

  • XTC always struck me as being greatly influenced by the Psychedelic Rock of the 60's/early 70's.

I'd even say they're the best New Wave Rock band of all time.

  • good song...it's been ages since I've last hear it

  • I never tried to swim on the grass, not even backwards.

  • This guys can write dissonant punk, melodic pop, rock, melodic moving lilting passions of originality. Too good for most ears for the brains attached are reared on stupidity and Britney Spears.

  • Indeed. Many people don't take time to appreciate good music. It took me time to like XTC, I'm glad I appreciate them.

  • @101Volts think about it.all the time thats wasted on that trash on commercial radio.when they could play quality music instead.it s sad...

  • @cosmicrider287 I know, There's so much talent that goes wasted. Flipron, for example, Have some pretty good songs but they're extremely obscure. At least The New Pornographers and Neko Case are mainstream, There's some hope after all.

  • Yes this song, this whole album is a highlight of my life. One day I will watch this video on grass and it will be trippy.

  • or it will be terrible because you´re too old for this )))

but maybe that´s what the whole song suggests

  • Hey man, don't harsh my mellow.

  • ? ? - is it now forbidden to be a sart arse only on music, and not on history?

i at least had my time spent with this shit stuff

  • Ahh...to think of the things *I* used to do on grass.....

  • You really can't appreciate the song 100% unless you listen to Summer's Cauldron 1st.

  • have you listened to everything that xtc has done????

  • What does that have to do with the crafting of the Skylarking album?

  • because xtc is one of the best. they are as good as brian wilson. we all know that mike love thinks he can write a song like brian wilson did but he cant. song writer for xtc can and has.

  • That still has nothing to do with Skylarking being a concept album spanning from childhood to death. Each previous song makes the proceeding song stronger and presents the overall message.

  • you cannot appreciate the song unless you listen to everything they have done. I understand the idea of a concept album but I also understand listening to the sum of a bands work and how they got to that album. Its like listening to the beach boys up to pet sounds.

  • Now you just want to be combative. No matter what I say, you'll justify your position and I'll be banging my head up against the wall. That's your opinion and I have mine. I think a song on a concept album has greater meaning when listened to in order because it is a story and you think it has greater meaning if you listen to every song the band ever made. A debate over opinion, especially musical opinion, is meaningless debate that I won't engage in.

  • k lol

  • What wall?? I have never been combative. I dont care enough to combat you. I just know what I like. I dont give a flying fuck what you like. K??? Do you get it??

  • Read what you just typed aloud and say that isn't being combative. o_O

Whatever, dude. You like what you like and I won't be bothered to reply anymore because I see where this is going.

  • its..ok....

  • Bollox ! So you're saying you can't appreciate Season without hearing That's Really Super Supergirl first Bollox !

  • YouTube comments: Your one stop shop for intelligent discussion...not.

  • skylarking cd is one of their best...good songs on it...play it on a nice summers eve.

  • what the f***? the lp peaked at 70 and 'dear god' just sneaked into the top 40.(37).can we go back in time in my doleran and make 'DG' go top ten , 'grass' go top 20 album top 40 ?

  • Sure, why not? Then we'll fix JD's misunderstanding.

  • should we sort him out ?

  • This is my top album of the 80s and this is my fav song from it. Who really cares how it charted?. The whole album is superb as was Apple Venus 1 and most of their other albums. The 2 Dukes of Stratosphere albums have just been re-released w/extra tracks. Always love them too.

  • Mysterious song

  • XTC is really good, their songs make me happy.

  • classic indeed.

  • shock me

    dukes

  • im soo happy i discovered XTC

  • same :D

  • This is so god damned good it's scary. Great sound.

  • how

  • The things we used to do on grass... thats all-pjd

  • Show me the things we used to do on grass... nothing else be said-PJD

  • FREKY VIDEO!

  • won't somebody put SEASON CYCLE on, purty pleeze??

  • It could just be a coincidence, of course, but I have loads of this grass stuff in my garden. It's lovly and green except for the dog has had a wee.

  • That's a naughty video!

  • Brilliant!

  • Directed by Tim Brandt, who used the same reverse-filming technique in Tim Finn's 'Carve You In Marble'

  • what are you talking about big day and dying are great songs

  • this version of the song is horible compared to the demo version on coat of many cupboards. and that version is so hard to get. before you disagree go see for yourself!

  • Ah yes. Very good. I'll think I'll go now and let my mind float downstream...

  • Well this vid sure answers any questions about what kind of grass..hummmm?

  • They're just singing about bloody grass, not the illegal sort nubcake! Although it seems the Americans got confused on that one too...

  • ah yeah sure

  • Believe what you like, but Grass ain't about the illegal sort :P

  • ...then what kind of grass can make you feel THAT great...hahaha...im pretty sure this is the illegal kind

  • The kind of grass you fuck on.

  • you mean the grass you get fucked off of

  • No he means you're both dumb fucks! I think that's what it means..change it butthead

  • they are singing about both as they stated in their book. Just like pink thing was about his daughter and penis. Double meaning is one of the things they are good at.

  • SkyLarking is the best album of XTC!

  • Ah,..Grass,...lovely to get back in touch with

the carefree innocence of youth. "over and over, we flatten the clover..." Skylark,...surely the sweetest bird?.... Skylarking,..a most rewarding pastime

  • my favorite song ever

  • The best album of XTC, great!

  • Skylarking is my favourite Album by XTC. All the songs are great. I like all of their stuff!

  • "You play hard to get, cause you're teacher's pet"... LOVE IT!!!

  • Oh man, those vocal harmonies...

I remember them hating Todd Rundgren's slant on their sound but then, DEVO hated Brian Eno's production of their first album, and it's a landmark in rock history...

I must have listened to Skylarking - and to "Are we not men?" - three hundred times, honest, and it still sounds fresh and new to this day, plus, impossible not to play from start to finish.

  • aw, he had just found his marbles at the beginning of the song, and then he goes and loses them again. :(

  • I also thought that "Wheel/Maypole" was really cleverly done. There are sooo many great songs spread throughout all the albums.

Language in our lungs, Battery Brides, Then She Appeared, Jason ATA, Scissorman, Dear God, Greenman, Harvest...brilliant.

  • I know this is a personal preference thang...but..English Settlement as the best album woot!

Drums and Wires is my favourite..Ok i will admit ES is one of the better remaining choices. Grass/Meeting place fusion really worked well imho.

  • ¨Grass/Meeting place fusion really worked well imho.¨

Interesting then what you think of the rest of the songs on Skylarking. I think imho that it's the best album of all times.

  • Earn Enough and Another Satellite are the only other tracks that i like on Skylarking.

I think the main difference (with Skylarking)is the number of tracks written by Colin (no disrespect to Colin but Andy's work was more lively and crisper).

Big Day, Dying and Bonfire...aren't XTC quality.

  • Not a big fan of Big Day. Sacrificial Bonfire is a crackin' song, though.

  • ahh.. it's still good..

  • I agree with u, todd's production were the best as always ( 12 rods). And again, the band ended hating todd's work, but the secuencial songs are the best thing ive heard in years. The songs are the best of the best ive heard of xtc. Much more song architecture than other albums

  • Love the West Country accent in this song.

  • this was one of the first XTC songs i ever heard and i fell in love with the band right away

  • God I love this album

  • Yes it's right up there with "English Settlement" as one of their best.

  • Funny when Andy got tooo close to the lawn mower.

  • today is january 1, 2008, and this is the third tertairy song of all time, shock me, long standing khon, fancy? Clovereflect the sparklies indeed

  • Such a great album. The way Summer's Cauldron seques into this is brilliant.

  • The things we do on grass tee hee

  • Skylarking feels like summer.

    A good summer.

  • laying in the grass and i wonder whos woman foot it was or was it

  • koslow88 -too bad you don't l;ike it. "Grass" and "Dear God" are my faves but to each his/her own... :)

  • Thanks for posting this! I've never even seen it. Skylarking is the best XTC album of all.

  • i disagree skylarking is an ok album with only 3 or 4 great songs.the rest is just filler.

  • Really? Do you disagree with Todd Rundren's (sp) production? Which songs on it do you like?

  • Those songs are great, but how about "Earn

    Enough for Us?"

Partridge has spoken of Todd's and XTC's

differences in making this record, and how

it took him time to really appreciate what

a great album it was and is!

  • i think their dukes of stratosphere cd is way better

  • well, yer right, I love that

    one also :>)

  • Really fun to watch. Thinly veiled rug references in there or am I imagining it?

  • Rug references? Guess I missed it. S'pose a rug'd be nice if y'r laying on the dirt (lol)

  • Doh! I think you know wot I mean blondifun. Moral of the story is "keep off the grass" and don't type too fast when under the influence.

  • I think I'm in love with the lady that appears at 1:30 in this video!

  • Superb - never knew there was a video to this. This is my favourite track on the excellent "Skylarking" - I love this song - thanks for posting.

  • i listened to this song 40+ times one day while walking around brooklyn

  • Thanks lokrume!! From a fellow Idea forum-er! Keep up the good work - nik

  • i adore this video....favorite line? ....."over and over we flatten the clover"..

that line has haunted me for years

    so evocative and sensual.....

    promising verdant tumblings and

    fervent fumblings...erotic twinings

    fragrant grass stains

    muddy knees and elbows

    straw in hair, eyes bright

    LOVES it.

    make me wobbly and warm

  • I really like "I will pounce on you, just us & the cuckoos".

I know what you mean about the song being haunting...

  • "I will pounce on you, just us & the cuckoos"

    excellent!....yes....haunting...evocative and sensual.....

    this song has it all....

  • Before youtube, I'd only seen the video once, back in '86; finding it here was a real treat.

  • you can read about the "making of" of this vid if you go to chalkhills dot org *THE* XTC fan website!

  • THANKS redgrrl!

    :)

  • Best promo for a single ever very 1986 - cool!!!
