This song reminds me SO MUCH of the Summer of 1967, in every way, shape & form. It's obvious Andy & Colin had a fondness for that day & age (in the same way Dream Academy did), and "Grass" remains one of my all-time favorite songs of theirs. I hear it, close my eyes, and remember that magic summer when I was 12-going-on-13, and everything was just magical in the truest sense...thanks mostly to the music. Wow.
No, Skylarking is Definetely THE best produced and written album that XTC ever worte, you have to admit it. Their earlier album's songs were all similar, but in THIS one, every song is its own diverse masterpiece.
@blastmir All versions of Skylarking released so far were manufactured wrong, They're all out of phase. Andy is working on a re release of Skylarking on vinyl that will be in phase and it'll sound much better.
This guys can write dissonant punk, melodic pop, rock, melodic moving lilting passions of originality. Too good for most ears for the brains attached are reared on stupidity and Britney Spears.
@cosmicrider287 I know, There's so much talent that goes wasted. Flipron, for example, Have some pretty good songs but they're extremely obscure. At least The New Pornographers and Neko Case are mainstream, There's some hope after all.
because xtc is one of the best. they are as good as brian wilson. we all know that mike love thinks he can write a song like brian wilson did but he cant. song writer for xtc can and has.
That still has nothing to do with Skylarking being a concept album spanning from childhood to death. Each previous song makes the proceeding song stronger and presents the overall message.
you cannot appreciate the song unless you listen to everything they have done. I understand the idea of a concept album but I also understand listening to the sum of a bands work and how they got to that album. Its like listening to the beach boys up to pet sounds.
Now you just want to be combative. No matter what I say, you'll justify your position and I'll be banging my head up against the wall. That's your opinion and I have mine. I think a song on a concept album has greater meaning when listened to in order because it is a story and you think it has greater meaning if you listen to every song the band ever made. A debate over opinion, especially musical opinion, is meaningless debate that I won't engage in.
What wall?? I have never been combative. I dont care enough to combat you. I just know what I like. I dont give a flying fuck what you like. K??? Do you get it??
what the f***? the lp peaked at 70 and 'dear god' just sneaked into the top 40.(37).can we go back in time in my doleran and make 'DG' go top ten , 'grass' go top 20 album top 40 ?
This is my top album of the 80s and this is my fav song from it. Who really cares how it charted?. The whole album is superb as was Apple Venus 1 and most of their other albums. The 2 Dukes of Stratosphere albums have just been re-released w/extra tracks. Always love them too.
this version of the song is horible compared to the demo version on coat of many cupboards. and that version is so hard to get. before you disagree go see for yourself!
they are singing about both as they stated in their book. Just like pink thing was about his daughter and penis. Double meaning is one of the things they are good at.
the carefree innocence of youth. "over and over, we flatten the clover..." Skylark,...surely the sweetest bird?.... Skylarking,..a most rewarding pastime
I remember them hating Todd Rundgren's slant on their sound but then, DEVO hated Brian Eno's production of their first album, and it's a landmark in rock history...
I must have listened to Skylarking - and to "Are we not men?" - three hundred times, honest, and it still sounds fresh and new to this day, plus, impossible not to play from start to finish.
Earn Enough and Another Satellite are the only other tracks that i like on Skylarking.
I think the main difference (with Skylarking)is the number of tracks written by Colin (no disrespect to Colin but Andy's work was more lively and crisper).
I agree with u, todd's production were the best as always ( 12 rods). And again, the band ended hating todd's work, but the secuencial songs are the best thing ive heard in years. The songs are the best of the best ive heard of xtc. Much more song architecture than other albums

XTC always struck me as being greatly influenced by the Psychedelic Rock of the 60's/early 70's.
I'd even say they're the best New Wave Rock band of all time.
