nice clip. have any of you fellas checked out the wow cheats pack from warcraftbotsXinfo (replace X with .) ? it is amazing, i recently down loaded it. its got completely everything in it, gold guides, bots, hacks, glitches and even the newest arena glitch. i probably shouldnt tell people about this however at the very least this gives you all a reasonable opportunity to dl it before i pwn all of you
one thing I like about all this is that every single person who shows off linux just kinda sits there for 30 or so seconds jiggling the windows around in all of its superiority of jiggleness. Dont get me wrong I use ubuntu but I'll tell u theres some hardcore issues with it compared to vista... I'm not gunna get into it but I know alot of u who use it .. know these problems.
I agree with you completely that Linuxheads overly villify Windows and that the linux desktop cannot do everything windows can as easily. But it is a damn good, and almost better, replacement that from the get-go has been largely written by a community of people for FREE. You can run HIGHLY COMPARABLE and a more secure operating system for free.
Lots of people fail to admire this because of how easy it is to torrent a free copy of windows and break the law, I reckon.
The best thing about this video? It's from Feb, 2007. Great improvements have been made to pretty much everything shown here. It really wasn't hard to get all this working back then, but it's even easier now...
Hacks?? what hacks? you just wine run WoW and Ventrilo, no hacks!
_
I run my WoW in Suse, Have Beryl but never use it. See, it is amazing first time you use it with all the effects and the cube, but is just eye-candiness, nothing useful at all, I just use KDE's composite, that's it.
Those who say 'you do the same as in Windows' really have no idea what they are talking about.

XP is not a DOS based OS. It's not full of viruses. He's not doing the same thing; he's emulating Windows. He would be doing the same thing if he were using an installation of wow built for the OS (like the mac version).
The pretty graphics add no utility/productivity value whatsoever. Try making your fonts work properly first..
while you're point about XP not being DOS is correct, it is not an emulation of windows. you should try using linux or perhaps check out someone's system using linux and the compiz fusion desktop. it's quite interesting and while some of the eye candy is certainly not required, the freedom to use multiple desktops on a system without an encrypted kernel is huge. it would amaze you how stable linux really is, not to mention fun. Linux still has a way to go but its getting closer...

..Its a program that you would buy for 60$ of the internet called Crossover Linux. or if not buy, torrent somewhere. Google it. BTW Only game it can really run is WoW.. not many games work for it.
the box of ut2004 have a large big fat penguin on the backside of it. ID games works fine on linux from what i have heard. Warcraft3 should prolly work through some program.

I want to try Linux its just A) minimal support versus Windows and B) it would be my first Unix OS and the installation process is a bit foreign to me. It looks really cool though. I know a few Linux guys that are really cool but I've met others who look at me like I'm a 10 year old because I use Windows. Is the community really this stubborn or are there friendly ones that prefer helping and explaining things over idle banter? Once again, I'm seriously interested in trying it.
Download ubuntu, put it on a disc, instert the disc and restart your computer, ubuntu will load up, install it, after your done load ubuntu and get xchat, ask ppl on xchat questions and tell them you are a noob at linux. They are always nice to me.
Zenumren, that's called multiple desktops, it's been on Unix-world for ages. Beryl just added the nice touch displaying each desktop on the face of a cube.
Fantastic. I've been using WoW on linux and its great. WoW is designed very well, it works on both Mac and Windows, and works great with wine. Its OpenGL. It would be nice, however, if Blizzard would officially support it on linux.
I think he did... it's Cedega, which is a commercial offshoot of Wine... but WoW runs pretty well on Wine alone. as you can see on my machine in this video with nothing but standard wine, and the -opengl option added to the WoW.exe binary:- v=1hpE6UqslT8
I still want to know what the music is, it's cool!... Just if anyone is interested, my nephew is running Linux on an Athlon XP 2800+ with a Geforce 7300, so fairly budget stuff, and WoW works perfectly under the vanilla wine (0.9.34)... so go on people... get it!
Lol 2 months with Ubuntu on my laptop and I still can't get the "Linux for humans" to display proper graph acceleration, let alone Beryl ... I keep trying ...
Great video! It might convince some die hard Windows users to try out linux :)
I have some questions though. You say you are running 64bit Ubuntu. Are you running Wine through 32bit libraries? And what about your hardware? Can you tell me the specs of your CPU, GPU, Ram? I guess the rendering architecture you are using is XGL? Or is it Nvidia's TFP? OpenGL content gets accelerated through the rendering layer itself... So it can't be AIGLX, right? Please tell me :)
I have an Athlon64 X2 5k+ with 2GB RAM and an NVidia 7900GTX card. Underlining that I run 64-bit Ubuntu is quite irrelevant as WoW is rendering on the 32-bit compatible libraries shipped with the latest official driver. I'm using NVidia TFP. Everything is vanilla from the official repositories. I've been running Linux for 10 years on servers and my desktop at work but I'm quite the noob when it comes to beryl and xgl/aiglx.
Wow! what a powerful machine! I have to do it with a 256MB laptop / radeon 7500 32MB.. Works fine with AIGLX in 16bit color depth though... I'm hoping to buy a new computer soon. I can't wait for Blur and water effects (not possible with my old graphics card)
Hi, I just wanted to ask... what method of emulation are you using to run WoW. I use native "Wine", but I cant switch between fullscreen and windowed as your example shows... either way, what method were you using to switch?.
Gotta love Beryl! Also, I've never run it on Windows... so I don't know is there's any significant issues, however my old machine was a little slow... do you know if it's CPU bound for emulation or if a faster GFX card will improve it on a slower machine... (XP2800+)..
to run a game in wine you need what it says on the box, so if you need a GF7000+ card you need one in wine to, its cos it can use X to acsses the GraffCard...

Cool cool, but programs are programs, get Yodm3d and WindowFX and you got beryl. Had a 8600 in XP ran HL2dm at 160 FPS, but on linux, 40-70 FPS.

Stupid wannabe OS. Why don't you guys create your own games instead of spending your life trying to do the same things you do in Windows.

Great demo, I think it's the best demo of Linux and beryl/compiz/aiglx/xgl/whatever I've ever seem.
You definitely show what's important for most users when they want to see Linux in action.
Areas of improvement:
* The are some lines on the screen that the camera exaggerates, I don't know how that can be fixed.
* You missed the Start Here button :)
Hasta la Vista was the best!
