I'm reading the comments, I realize there may be a possibility (Because I dont Know Prince Personally, never met the man) Prince may have some issues but some of you guys make him sound like the worst asshole to ever walk the face of the planet. Like he is this angry, jealous, vindictive little man constantly firing people for every little defiance. Is he that bad? A little black nepoleon?
@tun3tym3 I did not say Stone did not have a legendary career without Prince. Prince was a biy when Stone was a major rock star. And if you dont know the last time Prince had a hit, then there is no need to engage in any debate with you.
October 1986 when this album dropped, I bought it at Camelot Music and popped it in my tape and I know P was jealous because he recorded "Shockadelica" in response to Jesse not having a title song on the album and collaborating with Sly.
@TheNewsoul2 jealous? Even though Crazay was a nice song, it hit #53 on the chart. Prince was not a bit jealous. He wrote Shockadelica as a dig at Jesse, and said "All Great Album Titles should have a song by the same name." Kiss hit # 1 for Prince 6 months earlier, and Sign O The Times hit # 3 less than 6 months later.
Yeah but Jesse got to work with Sly Stone and Prince never did after years of begging. And is best album Sign O the Times is modeled after Sly and the Family Stone stylistically right down to the horn players. Prince was jealous of Jesse because he got to work with his main musical inspiration.
@tun3tym3 Obviously, you haven't been to a Larry Graham show... it was the best I've seen in years. I doubt there are any younger people out there that can out play him on the bass! Sly and the Family Stone were trailblazers... they set the tone for generations to come. It is unfortunate for Sly that drugs took over his life, but I wish him the best.
@GBLoverman . Been there done that. Larry is a good player but I'll take Sonny T any day over Larry's playing. Let the bass be the bass. He may have been the dude back in the day and much respect for that. I seen him recently and he was even with Prince in Oakland last year at the time. He opened for Prince actually. He is a great performer no doubt. Wish he would just keep it simple sometimes. KISS.
I rather hear 'one in a million' than a bunch noise. distortion on bass?
Man Sly is a sad case now. They showed him on Inside Edition and he's broke, homeless living in a van, and he looks BAD!! Rail thin and sickly. It's a shame to because he was such a great musician and entertainer.
@Bdog1277 Yeah I saw that!! Dude was unrecognizable! Shit I didn't know it was him because I started watching it in the middle of the segment and when the lady said "Sly Stone" I almost dropped my drink! I mean he looks terrible and he walks and talks really bad. I guess all those years of hard drugs and drinking caught up with him!
@BonaDun Prince had been trying to get Sly to perform with him for years and Sly kept declining. You know you a bad mofo when you can tell PRINCE no! Prince wanted him bad for the Rave 2000 concert but Sly turned him down and he had to settle for the rest of the Family Stone, which is certainly not a bad thing, but how cool would it have been to have Sly there with them? That would have been off the charts!!!
@Bdog1277 That's true. Prince mentioned in an interview that he tried to get Sly for Rave and Sly said no. Sly was one of Prince's main musical influences along with James brown, Stevie Wonder, and Larry Graham. Prince was a huge fan of Sly. I agree with you that if Sly had been there that would have taken Rave to a whole 'nother level!!!
@Bdog1277 are you saying that Prince sought him out prior to Jesse snatching the gig
so as to suggest that Sly preferred Jesse Johnson over Prince?
That's some amazing shit. I guess I missed that report. I can totally see how Sly would decline in the later years though most likely cuz he was tripping more than ever... all old and burnt out...nothing to offer at that point. Even Sly wasn't willing to embarrass himself at that time.
@BonaDun Jesse and Sly did this in '86. Rave was in 1999 so I don't think it was prior to Rave but I did hear that Prince wanted Sly for more than one gig after Rave. I don't know if Sly was burnt out then like he is now. Seems like I remember him making an appearance at some award show on TV a few years after Rave because he had a blonde mohawk haircut, can't remember what show it was though. Maybe Sly did like Jesse better than Prince though. Never know.
@FrenchieCorona I don't think they are but I could be wrong. I've never heard that before. People thought Prince and Morris Day were cousins but they weren't, they were actually high school buddies.
I once heard a version with Just Jesse only. No Sly. It was on a local radio station and the music sounded slightly different. Wished I taped it then.
Outstanding video, and a great piece of history. Great camera work, costumes, dancing, and 80's Prince-era local color. Can't get much better than that.
This was some serious controversy back in the day . . . . . Prince thought he had Jesse on lock, then Jesse goes out & records this with Sly without running it by Prince. Girl fight!!!
@nicolesherburne SINCE WHEN DOES ANYONE HAVE RUN SOMETHING BY PRINCE BEFORE IT GETS DONE . PRINCE ISN'T ANY AUTHORITY OVER ANYONE. GIRL FIGHT ? PRINCE IS THE ONLY BITCH OUTTA THE TWO!!!
I was in love with Jesse Johnson back then. I always liked the way they took turns expressing each of their representation of the "Minneapolis Sound." Funk, pop and R&B mixed altogeher. This song was the jam because at the time our ol' school was being bought together with that still ol' school Sly Stone, ya dig??? A recipe for an unforgettable classic OLD SCHOOL JAM for today. I miss all of them but The Time, Morris and Jesse still tour and STILL JAM; CRAZAY!!!
Man SLY made this whole thing what it is if you ask me! Even at his most cracked he still could light up a stage...I wish he had kept making records!! (ones that we the public could hear I mean...he's never stopped recording.)
Back then Sly was the shit........Jesse was the shit........This song was the shit.......The video was the shit and this era of music was the fucking shit. Don't know bout you but my memory tells me I was having a funky good time when this came out. Funk upon a time I.....was da shit!
Jessie was doing Prince ,in the way he looked ,a little to much here . He is way better than that . The song was hot, Sly looked good , and at the time people thought maybe he was coming back. That never happened , we all were hoping
@MultiGuarddog Jesse has said that not only did he have his own look before he knew who Prince was, but also that that's why he got the gig w/ the Time without even having to audition.
