I love this book, it was amazing. You came to my school and talked to us, and it was AMAZING. I was at the edge of my seat, and i wanted to hear more, but you needed to go D: But I think that what you went thru was so hard... You didnt do anyhting wrong! You fought for your rights! you're so strong! :)
Cheers from California!! My friends and I love your Amazing book, who cares if some moronic judge called you names, surely she hasn't read you book or even history, ever!!
I just finished reading her book, and i searched her on the internet, i have so much respect for this woman. and i am one of the few teenagers who would like to meet her or someone like her, instead of a celebrity. I'm also a muslim, and i hated the way the muslims back then about their way of believing in islam. It is not like that!!, i believe torture isnt the way to get answers, because to prevent torture PEOPLE WILL LIE.
Her courage is extraordinary. Being coerced into marrying a man who has tortured you, this has to be one of the lowest points in her life. What kind of man can torture a young girl of 16 or 17 and then, at the point of execution, coerce her into marrying him? I so admire her strength of will and honesty to expose her life so the truth can be told. An extraordinary life that should give courage to every man, woman and child alive today. :)
I have to say that i really admire you /marina, I am not persian but i do know how terrible it is to have someone going thru the same situation as you and i have tosay that i never thought your book will just brought back all my memories as i was reading that i could not read it for a while because it just made me cry and every singe word i read, was hurting so much and i realized that some how, i did the same trying to cover up something that doesnt have to remain there hurting someone.
I read her book twice! It is amazing!! I still think about what she and thousands if our countryman go through in that prison in the name of nasty Islam! They can pack up their Islsm and take it back to their Arab ancestors and their camels! Shame on all of them who call themselves representatives of God! If that's God, then shame on him to sit and watch my brothers and sisters go through such torture! We are proudbod you Marina! Love your book!
As a Persian person I really admire your courage for coming out and tell the truth. People like you make the difference in the world. Thank you for your courage and let us know your suffering. I am glad you decided to share it with us. If it was not for women like you we still had to live believe barbaric Islamic law and stay home and only raise kids and no education. You thought us to be strong and outspoken, VERY proud to see Persian women like you around.
I read this book over a year ago now & although it was a shocking story I felt that it was a mix of fiction and fact. Only the author really knows the truth, so arguing about whether it is fact or fiction is pointless really!
i am reading ur book - just read first chapter n felt anxious enuf to search u on google and youtube, i believe its gonna be a g8 journey and awakening as i go along further with the book.
farzy, are you really a farsi? because I've met quite a few, each having their own stories to tell. not as horrible as Marina's but enough not wanting to live in Iran any longer. I've also read some of Khomeini's ideas re women....disGUSting.
Your Facial expression while telling the story of you being executed seems like you are telling us about your routine habit of buying milk and grocery from the local store!!! There is, amazingly, no trace of a personal experience in your narration!!! You just say everything off the book you have written!
Actually, you cannot expect her to continue to have the horrifying emotions she went through. It's a good thing it's now a "story" for her. Writing the book was like badly needed therapy.
If you knew anything about the strict rules and procedures of that prison of Evin, you would know what I meant: the story she writes discredit any real and true experience real prisonors might have had.
farzy, you can believe what you wish. as far as I'm concerned, there's no way she made it up - change/embellish some parts perhaps. but the basic experience is fact, I have no doubt.
Just fyi, the book was not received well by other Iranian women who spent years in Evil. Some Iranian women who actually spent years in Evin and have published their memoirs consider Marina's book a fabrication. Not that it was fun to be in Evin -- they say it was much worse. But based on their experience, Marina is distorting the real Evin to either hide something about her past or to gain fame and recognition.
If you google her name in English, youll get interiews with Smiley, NPR, CVS. If you google her name in Farsi, youll get angry protest letters from women who spent time in Evin. I guess this indicates something is wrong. One of these women remembers Marina in prison and calls her a lier. I think Marina should have published her book with a different title Prisoner of Tehran: A Novel.
me45h, mOhammad:), let's say that just half of her story is true, I think it's more than enough. Where do these other women live who call her a liAr is one of my questions. And I believe that she said herself that some of the people in her book are actually a "combination" of people (my words).
me45h, to be honest, I don't see how this book could be stereotyping Iranians. It shows her experience (let's assume this). But there are thousands of other experiences. I have met many Iranians and they are the ones who represent Iran for me. Your expression "part of an industry" remind me of another video which is trying hard to bad mouth ex muslims.
I am not bad mouthing anybody. Please dont characterize my behavior. FYI, I am an atheist and I have never been a practicing Muslim.
I can't assume what many informed people are telling is not true.
My suggestion to you is to read Fatemeh Keshavarz: Reading more than Lolita in Tehran. Or google Hamid Dabashi and see why some Iranian exiles are angry with books such as Marinas.
me45h, not to belabour the point, but I only mentioned that your comment "reminds me" and wanted to leave it at that.
Fact is, having met as many Iranians in various walks of life, I have nothing but high regard for all of them. I cannot say this about the Iranian regime, that's all.
And thank you for your suggestions for more info and reading materials, much appreciated.
You first discovered my name and were happy you had unearthed my hidden motivations. Then suggested that Marina's critiques are prisoners of Iran and can not tell the truth. Then you hinted I must be angry because Marina is no longer a muslim. But you are wrong all along. Critiques of Marina are themselves victims of Islamic republic. Many of them have published their own memoirs of the atrocities done to them. But this doesn't mean that any mixture of truth and fantasy is welcome.
Read my comments and your responses once more and you'll get a sense of what you've been doing. I gave you some useful pieces of information to put this debate among ex-prisoners into a perspective. You try to understand my motives.
I am personally happy that she has partly recovered from the horrors she experienced at Evin. I not happy that she is doing this by fabricating a story that everybody says cant be true.
She has told her story, she is not going to contradict herself now. Maybe you should ask someone who knows Farsi tell you why she has stirred so much strong emotions among people who were tortured in Evin.
Despite some tiny loopholes in writing the book, she is a brave and self confident woman whose job should be appreciated. Marina thanks for moving a step forward to bring freedom for people.
No actually she is a Christian, but if you had taken the time to find out who she is and what she has been through, perhaps you wouldn't care whether she has read the Quraan Mam or not. Maybe you should read "Prisoner of Tehran," by none other than the woman in the video.
i agree with breekat, u should read the book, and like the writer said, her book is about ppl and their tolarance, its not bout how good or bad islam is, there will always be good and bad in any relijion

Germany, England, France, Canada, United States, Sweden.
Their criticism is that she was a collaborater that is now producing a fictional best seller to get her share of fame and wealth.
My criticism is that she is part of an industry that reproduces stereotypes against Iran at a critical time.
