Ian, I am back for another listen and I just must comment from the very first chord you play here, I get a lump in my throat! haha. because I love the piano and you play so well, and this is just such beautiful music, represented with such intense musicianship as a soloist that you give. Thank you for this,
Let me tell you mt brother.... That was F--KING GREAT! I loved that... Your playing and vocals were spot on! Gabriel would be proud my man... Keep the early Genesis stuff coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@nadavcat The very last chord is the same chord that starts the song - Am6... could also be classified as a D9 chord... the notes are (in the right hand): C, E, F#, A (the left hand plays the low D, so technically this is a D9 chord, but the fact that the notes hold until the flute melody comes in later, it becomes an Am6 then.
Actually... to be nit-picky - the chord once the flute comes in is a standard D7 (C, D, F#, A)
Ian, you're becoming a hero of the "YouTube stuff" topic at our Polish Genesis forum =) Or, should I say a star? Anyway, keep up the great work and we hope to see some more of our favourites... =)
@Plociu Poland?!! Insane! That is so cool. For what it's worth... 3 of my top 10 favorite movies of all time were made by a Polish director!! (I'd write his name, but I'd screw up the spelling for sure!!)
Thank you so much for your encouragement. It means so much, especially coming from so far away.
Ian, your musicianship, sense of humour and wicked genius at interpreting GENESIS classics like this is so special and spiritual. Thank you for sharing your fine interpretations. Everyone is very grateful for what you are presenting..
Well... I just shot a quick, unrehearsed tutorial video. Quick is a joke... it was over 30 minutes! (felt like about 10 minutes to me!) So I'm going to have to edit out all the crap and post it asap. I wish it was convenient and easy to upload 30 minute videos on Youtube, but it ain't. Perhaps I should just do a live video thing on Ustream or something!! Stay tuned!
The first time I heard this was @1976 when I went out and bought the Foxtrot album. I listened to it over and over again because I loved the album as a whole but I must admit, it is only when I see you actually performing this piece that I can truly appreciate what a fantastic group of musicians Genesis really were (are).
Another brilliant video Ian, mistakes and all...and I'm sure that Tony made mistakes playing live too but he (fortunately) had 4 other musicians to hide behind.
@CokeeDaPenguin That is wonderful for you to say. Thank you very much. I came to know this around the same time period, so this music has been in my blood for a long time. I appreciate you taking the time to watch it. Cheers!
You are great, flawless, how did you get to know it? did you get a midi file or the actual sheet music, how about giving us a tutorial? anyway, congratulations for such a good work of an excellent genesis song.
@pca321 Thanks for that! I've known this song since I was a kid - thus, the only reason I can sing it without a lyric sheet (I never remember the words to anything... even my own songs!) So it was just a matter of finding the elements that I wasn't sure of (ie. the organ solo) and then figuring out how to play the guitar parts on piano, or at least a decent variation on it. It was fun to learn. A tutorial is a great idea. I'll put something together for that.
Nice work, Ian! I was anticipating you asking 'a flower?' at the end. Should have done it. :) Thanks for continuing the Supper's Ready cause! Looking forward to the rest.
adoro Ian Tanner, è un mito, anche Tony Banks lo direbbe ne sono sicuro, complimenti (non si sente che non è perfetto!!)
I adore Ian Tanner, is a myth, even Tony Banks would say, I'm sure, well done (I can't understand where it is imperfect!)
