her voice is like a tired child complaining sometimes but she is still a great singer - a touch of Randy Newman's speech impediment and style there too. Her CDs should be in dispensers along with tampax in co-ed dorms.
do you not like it? i mean i actually can't tell. you're saying she sounds like she's complaining childishly, and you're saying her CDs should be sold alongside tampons, but she's a great singer in your opinion. is that a 'you like her' or a 'she's not good'? like, i'm not trying to say anything, just curious as to what you mean. and when you say her CDs should be sold alongside tampons, does that mean they're cheap and bad, or that they should be made more available?
Surely one of the most beautiful songs ever written. She and Joni Mitchell were in a different league. 30 years on and just as beautiful. Listen to Joni's "River" to be equally moved.

Whoever picks the music for house is awsome!! I dont mean just here! Even when House was going in the hospital or Kutner and Amber died! The guy is totally perfect for this job!!!!!!!
i still have my original copy of this album and no matter how long I live, or where I've traveled to in my life, this is still a song that makes me cry. It is one of the most profoundly simple and perfect pieces of music I've ever owned. I'm glad I could be in the world with it.
@garymichael1950 It would be interesting, wouldn't it? I just happen to be a writer, and I can see, with you mentioning it, that it could be a wonderfully simple yet poignant piece of work. Very good idea.
@rosemarymclaughlin I've still got my original copy and listen to you! You're like me. Still callin' it an album when everything's on CD now. Don't feel badly, though. I went to the library last year and asked the 'kid' behind the counter where the CARD CATALOGUE was!LOLOLOL 'It's all on computer, ma'ma,' the kid said to me without missing a beat!
@ssm3141 Thanks for the lovely comment! I just bought it again, I tried to buy the download but was not allowed, cannot wait til it arrives. I used to listen to this song and cry at the beauty of some things the ugliness of others....I remember she wrote the album when she was 16 or something ...........WOW what a genius,...............oh I'm off again
@rosemarymclaughlin Wow! Sixteen! I did not know this. What a talent that she would be able to bring grown folks to their knees with her musical truths. As simple as this tune is, I am only able to listen to it when I can handle the emotions. I remember everyone no longer living when I hear it. I see my grandmother, and uncles and cousins that died as children. I think of me being an unhappy child sitting at the window in much wonder. Yep, years, they do go by....
absolutely love her voice. What a contrast from the guy she was once married to...Tom Waits. Would love to hear them do a duet. THAT would be something !!
Sounds like an old lighter and some bubbling going on in the background. Don't be afraid to use matches...it won't kill you. Thanks for taking the time to post the song between bongloads :)-
I am curious about the origin of this song. The song has such a sad feel to it, that I always thought it might be about the day after the Friday that JFK was assassinated, especially with the line "grown ups" crying....
i remember when this album came out. i had a friend who love me but as life was at that time wouldn't say it. i wonder where she is now. yes, years have gone by.
This is my all-time absolute favorite song. And Ricky Lee Jones is one of my two all-time favorite artists (the only other one I'd put up there is Joni Mitchell). So wonderful to see all of these videos of her posted on youtube- thank you everyone!!
It's great when you find out the songs you like are also liked by others...I thought I was the only one..there I go thinking again:) Thanks for posting this song! What a find!
@Dymondeyesz - Don't just limit yourself to this song, her entire debute is one of the best albums of all time and well worth finding on CD or MP3 format, you won't be disapointed. Acutally she has alot of music beyond her first album that is also top notch and worth seeking out, she has alot to say.
I am a long-time Rickie fan. I bought her first album - this one - in 1979, the year it was released. I was sixteen and bought it because I thought she looked cool. I fell in love and have followed her ever since, seeing her live at places like Carnegie Hall and buying her releases. This song has always been my favorite. It is melancholic, but strikes such a truthful emotional tone that it is undeniable and gorgeous.
i've adored rickie's voice since i was a baby and i love this song but what was it doing at the end of the House episode? apart from trying to make the director look cool and fill up cds.
