I got turned on to these guys by a friend after turning her on to Aspen (formerly Cosmic Vishnu) a group from Portugal who also Kill it without the need for a vocalist. Check out "winds of Revenge " if you want a great example. rock on.
I truly love this guys. They opened the "post-rock world" to me with EITS, and this is one of my favorite songs. They deserve so much more recognition for this piece of art. Cheers!
the reason the drummer gets crap is because the tempo isnt solid. you only notice it if you are a drummer who has spent countless hours with a metronome in your ears. imo it's not a big deal, gives it a touch of rubato heh.
i dont know why the drummer gets so much crap. his playing is tastefull never overt the top and compliments the overall feel of the songs very well. some times less is more.
i think the rawness of the drummer just adds to the whole band...i saw them live with isis and they both fucked my head up for a good week..they never get old
I'm not sure. I saw them live and he is a great drummer! I think it may be his recorded drum sound on their albums. It's not always the best (imo :p), but I recently heard one of the tracks on their new album on myspace and his sound is just amazing :)
check out Dosius Nuclear American Rain Dance" if you like instrumental music. Also play this video at the same time as Isis "In Fiction" music video. Bad ass. Thanks.
do you reckon there's a reason why both gojira's and pelican's respective albums that have environmental themes in them have the word Sirius involved?
I just got the privilege of seeing them over the weekend in Orlando and they played this song...incredible! I love this band. There's so much passion in them.
Yeah, I had a rode trip last year, we were driving through the Alaskan Wilderness and all we had was "The Fire in our Throats Beckons the Thaw" and it's like the music conformed to the landscape around us, really powerful stuff.
Yes, and I can actually bear sitting through this band, I like em. Last time I tested my patience, and nearly killed myself from back pain standing through 'Ours'.
haha i hear ya there. i saw them open for circa survive. the rest of the bands were amazing (fear before the march of flames and the dear hunter) but Ours made me wanna fall asleep.
This band has been a SNOOZE fest that legendary Self-Titled EP. That record was a monument. After that, someone must've cut their balls off, because Australasia was HUGE dissapointment.
you must be smoken crack to say that...Australasia, in my opinion, is one of the best ones. Their other albums are solid... plus they are amazing live!
Not their best performance but the song kicks ass like hell, I can understand why people give so much negative comments about them since not many people can accept these post-metal bands, I for one would say you can never compare one sub genre of metal to another one is unique in other way or another
in my opinion pelicans drummer is what makes the band somewhat unique not in his techanicality but his proto drumming style. I;m not the biggest fan but i have 2 say i like the band not unique but different in there own way. and yes im drunk and i am a drummer
I totally agree, it is extremely unique, like all the bits that post rock has left out and pelican has taken them all together and formed its own trashy post metal sound. And the drummer is pretty awesome in his own right, again, how unique it is.
People who spend time putting a label to a band and then pushing it on others are missing the point of music and sound like idiots. It seems like suddenly we have millions of music experts... who are far from being. Hopefully I won't run into any of you dipshits in public, it would ruin my mood.
anyone that says isis and pelican aren't similar is a fucking idiot.
o.k. so whats closer. isis and pelican, or pelican and paula abdul? or isis and the beegees? or pelican and hootie and blowjobs? isis and pelican are both stoner rock/stoner metal/drone metalrockcore ambient stoner. they are different bands, so they dont sound exactly the same, but they are similar.
Yes they are not the exact same band. I think you are missing sharktoungue's point. Slayer and Pelican don't really match up like Isis and Pelican or Tool and Isis right? The only thing that matters is that you like what you listen to and feel pationate about it, and I think/hope that goes for everyone who is watching this.
I don't think Isis and Pelican are smiliar. Am I really a 'fucking' idiot just because of that?
I think there are big differences, no, VAST differences between Pelican and Isis. But let's all stop labeling these bands that go beyond labels and enjoy them for the bands they are! And maybe we can stop calling each other 'fucking' idiots as well! :D
no your an idiot becuase you called this band overratted. have you actually listened to them? they are a very good band man, simle yet complexx instrumentals from all very talented musicians, isis i can say is not that great but this band is very unique once listened to thoroughly.
You'd think after this many albums the drummer would be able to be improve. But no, same sped up rolls, slowed down double bass, and general bad drumming. If they got a new drummer they'd be able to compare to Isis. But as it stands, no. Isis is a much more solid band.
I dunno, Im always in 2 minds about the drummer, I do agree with you on his ability and rubato performance etc, but I think it just gives the music more of that signature sound. I definitely think pelican are one of those bands that require a bit of listening before you really "get them" if you see what I mean. That's how I found it anyway.
Honestly, I agreed until City of Echoes. But some of the drumming on that record is just incredibly bad. Everything to The Fire in Our Throats will consistently be in my CD player, probably for a very long time.
Hmm, yeah that seems to be the general view with people that I've talked to, not that I've heard anything aside from the fire in our throats. But it seems a shame because I always pictured pelican a band that was going to get gradually better by adding more layers to their music, because as much as I like them, I always felt that there could be another layer of sound like singing or a higher melody. Maybe in future releases anyway.
Yes they do compare to isis in a way. How can you guys say they dont compare? same slow/melodic/doomy/melodic/stoner metal or similar in most instances. the only difference is that Isis is a little more ambien music due to their keyboard guy and the high tech instruments plus the vocals here and there. They both are awesome!!!!! how come they are so underrated? damn awesome band!!!
The only similarity Isis and Pelican share is that they're both really instrumental. Isis having vocals scattered here and there in their songs and Pelican is instrumental only. Otherwise soundwise they sound nothing alike. I've seen both bands live and they're both amazing.
stop comparing them. apples and oranges. just listen to them or don't. neither is making music to be better than anyone else and so they should be judged only against themsleves.
