When I read "Why I am not a Christian", my life changed. It enabled me to cast off the false dogmas thrust upon me from about 4 years old and start to grow up. I am still growing up and fondly remember the early days of realising that I could have my own opinion about the world. My guiding principle being to ask "Does it sound like magic? I would be interested in knowing in what way you hope them to be "wry send-up to pretense". Do you have any particular part in mind, or do you refer to the entire post?
As an addenda, and as a matter of interest, Russell was not a Christian, but he inherited the Platonic-Christian intellectual tradition, and represents a form of it in extreme development and therefore in extreme decadence. His great contribution is not as a philosopher, but as a mathematician.
To consider idea, as the product of the intellect, more worthy of intelligent conversation than either event or people, therefore, is to expose the speaker as the heir to Plato and the following Christian tradition in his or her belief in the primacy of the intellect.
My feeling is that we must break with this tradition if we are to free the humanity that for over two millennia has been been imprisoned, bound and gagged.
The intellect should be put back where it belongs, as the generator of rational thought. It is useful for problem-solving; I would not like to fix a car engine without it.
But we cannot fix life with it, as every attempt at social engineering has proved. We cannot live within the purely rational and remain sane. To attempt to do so is to resign from life, with all its absurdities and irregularities. The world of ideas is absorbing, but it is in the end a barren world.
And so back to the original point. The old sore about the relative importance of ideas, events and people is based entirely on the Western Christian tradition (with its roots in Plato) that the intellect is the most important human attribute. The whole of our society is now based on this assumption.
I would challenge this by saying that the intellect over-valued, and needs to be put in its proper place. It is necessary, but should not be regarded as the leading attribute of life.
And by religion, I don't mean organized religion, which I heartily detest as just another collection of dead ideas. I mean a proper reverence for life, as experienced every day, as it is lived in our relationship with others, our sexuality, our emotions and our perceptions.
Put simply, it is not fact that matters, but truth. All facts are true, but truth is a greater category than fact, and embraces both fact and that which we perceive or feel to be true.
When I say that people are the only thing worth discussing, I am not talking about idle gossip, which, again, is the product of idea. I mean the essential relationship of our selves to the rest of the living world, and to one another; how we, as individuals, connect (or not) with the rest of sentient and non-sentient existence. This might be seen as a reference to philosophy, but I am inclined to think it comes closer to religion.
People must have primacy, because if they did not, we would not be here to discuss either this matter or any other. Neither would there be anyone present to initiate either ideas or events.
Events come and go, but underneath them nothing really changes. Also, they repeat themselves continually, with minor differences. Most events are merely contingent, are not organic, and are usually the product of ideas. The exception to this is the natural event, such as a volcanic eruption, over which we have no control.
People, on the other hand, are always with us in the sense that if they were not, there would be nobody to experience either ideas or events.
It's not irrelevant whether ideas are sterile or not. It's very much to the point. If we spend too much time with sterile things we make ourselves sterile. That's (gradually) what's happening to the world. Russell was a good example of such a man. Although he lived to a grand age, he had died in his soul long before. That's why he was so unhappy.

I am absolutely amazed yet completely unsuprised by the lack of television programs that have actual philosophical themes like this. There's just not a single program where people just sit down and talk about this stuff. I'm glad that YouTube hosts a buttload of interviews and programs like this but the lack of modern versions is appaling.

Both were brilliant philosophers and mathematicians; it is utterly absurd to describe Russell as 'laughable' because one of his theories was later disproved by Godel. By such ridiculous logic, Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Spinoza, Kant and others would all be undeserving of respect. They are rightly revered because of their influence in the development of philosophy, not because they were ultimately right or wrong.

So were many people of the era. Most people pre-1945 were racist and anti-semetic too. A hundred years before Russell lots of people thought slavery was a-okay and before that it was natural for Kings and Nobles to rule and that commoners were born dirty.
Fifty years from now who knows what viewpoints will be held as backwards.
I doubt there is any famous hsitorical figure who didn't think someone we regard as backwards today.

@whiteliketar all life exists first and foremost to pass on its genes and perpetuate itself. Sex is the method of that perpetuation. The reason sex feels so pleasureable is fairly obvious to grasp as an evolutionary outcome.
Sex is the most important thing we do - we are compelled to do - and the pleasure of it is one of the aspects which helps better facilitate the activity.
The notions of deviance and pervesity are nonsense with sex between viable partners. Your views of sex are ignorant.

You have clearly never read even a sentence of any of Russell's work. He spent a good deal of his life campaigning against such ideology in both words and deeds. Even in his appraisal of Plato, in History of Western Philosophy, he makes clear the abomination of such practices.
Please, produce even a morsel of evidence that Russell was a Eugenicist, or else back off.

Russell's "Principle of Mathematics" for a definition of "pure mathematics") could be deduced from a small set of logical axioms. That is, Russell and Whitehead intended to show that pure mathematics is in fact logic.
