I did it today. Then I took my ghia for a spin, and Man my car was noisy and stalling!!! I don't know exactly what I did wrong!! Car is running really bad and a knocking noise is sounding. Does anyone know what can possibly be the problem??
Slightly more difficult underneath a bug, but this is exactly how I've been timing my valves. Perfect instructions especially compared to other videos on youtube (some others would show you how to burn valves in no time).
Perfection. That IS the way it is done. Watch out for other incorrect vids on youtube. This is the one to watch. Long live the aircooled VW. And Betty, my 69 bus. :)
Thanks so much. You've really helped me out. I'm out in Oregon where there's a big VW industry, but all the guys know it and charge a bundle. These cars aren't that complicated; I just needed to see someone do it to make sure I was doing it right. So much for Dads that don't know sh@t about working on cars.
ur video really helps but im having trouble to adjust the valves 1 start at cylinder 1 and ajust them an move to the next cylinder and adjust them but then i check cylinder 1 and the valves ar too tigh an or loose what can be the problem
This honestly doesn't look too hard to do. Im not mechanic by any means but as long as you have the tools and make sure they are spaced out 0.006 in between the valves, any average joe can do it! Does the 0.006 go for all engines? Im pretty sure my 72 is a 1600cc engine but im just asking...
isn"t it much easier to look at the marks on the pulley and the case?
and on some engines aren"t timed on tic they might be at 7,5 dergrees before or after...so when you look at the distributor it could be 7,5 degrees before tic am right?
@battisa It's not that critical. A few degrees one way or the other and the valves are still closed. That's what it's all about, and it's TDC not tic. TOP DEAD CENTER.
If you distributor drive gear was installed 180 degrees off, your rotor will point towards the Front driver's side of the vehicle not the rear passenger side. This happens when whoever rebuilt the motor installed the distributor drive gear 180 off..No big deal, just not standard.
this is a great vid...but, strangely enough, my distributor has NO notch...and i also noticed that the points on my distributor are on the other side from where they are on this dist. i seem to recall that on all my veedubs, they were behind the stem.
sooo, should i just aim the rotor in the same direction as on this vid, or would it be totally opposite?
Really glad that i saw your video, another video that i watched was adjusting all the vaves at once and rotating the engine 360 degrees. YOUR IS THE CORRECT WAY TO DO IT AGAIN THANKS!......(WARNING IF YOU HAVE WATCHED THE VIDEO BY John @ Costa Mesa R&D Automotive Machine) DON'T DO IT!!! GO BY THIS VIDEO BY AIRHEAD PARTS
Awesome videos of how to do things right. I wish you would do more. How about one on push rod tube replacement with the OEM and the spring loaded?
Great videos!!!

@GeminiSeven43 - Engine should be cold cold cold, as in park-it-overnight cold.
northwestnick 5 months ago
One thing I didn't hear him say is whether or not the engine should be hot or cold when adjusting valves. ?

I like the cross-check with the distributor to find TDC. You never know who assembled the engine and what type of changes were made.

always remove the feeler gauge when tightening the valve bolt. It's said that it can pinch it and mess up the feeler gauge.

Its recommended that you perform a valve check/adjustment during each oil change
