i don't mean to seem high brow but i think that was implied by the time he said your friend charlie he can "MAKE THINGS HAPPEN"

which led to the latter of his article being published in boys life magazine--- meaning only a boy would do that to his woman to get his self published a real man would have gotten it done through other means
