  • i have a macbook pro running windows 7 thru parallels desktop and it works fine for me. i like both.. i have never actually seen linux before this but im thinking of adding another virtual machine just to try it out

  • linux is sh!t

  • yes it does help... thanks... please tell which OS do you prefer... what config PC u have? i tried Hackintosh on my PC, it works fine, but i could not find drivers for many of my hardwares, example my printer. so Windows wins... In Linux i tried installing, it says there is a mount error.... please help or make a video and notify me... please and i will subscribe.

  • SO basicly it's pretty shit lol

  • aww , now i know how to pronounce Linux, lol

  • You forget to mention that it's also faster and runs on less resources.

  • Thanks..........

  • Free as in freedom not as in free beer. There is so much wrong with this video.

  • OS X - Good for design and has a FEW viruses. If you are a artist get this.

Windows - Good for just working and gaming (as long as you have anti virus and stuff). If you are not an artist and want to have everything work (for the most part, and you aren't stupid) get this.

Linux - Good for everything else. Not as good for design as OS X or gaming for Windows (there are Decent alternatives though.). If you like tinkering around with a computer or even want to know how to, Linux is for you.

  • PC = 9.9/10

    MAC = 7.6/10

    Linux= 8.1/10

  • Linux is the kernal, Ubuntu is the operating system. Both are used by God.

  • @Nathan2all97 Linux is not part of GNU, hurd is the GNU kernel. Because they're free software they have been combined as GNU/Linux.

  • you have speech issues.... learn to talk, seriously do you have terrets?

  • @cocometimber1 shut the fuck up faggot

  • @cocometimber1 What the fuck is your problem?

  • you have speech issues.... learn to talk

  • im burning linux onto cds and im going to sell them to retards

  • Free as in freedom (copy left), not free as in free beer.

  • Great Help Buddy. Thanks

  • It took him 14 minutes to make this video!!

  • Notice the completed rubix cube in the background.

  • WTF y r fags hatin on this guy about his facts if they know y did they watch it?

  • i wish this duche-bag would take down this video ~ he doesn't know what he is talking about. he thinks 'free' means price, which it doesn't. free software it a question of ethics, not price. linux is a kernel not an OS.

it's brutal because this is like the 2nd hit if you type linux into youtube.

this guy is a dumbass, and completely mis-represents Gnu/Linux, and the fact that he runs a tech blog is ridiculous.

  • @triplesquarednine I'd like to see your video explaining what this is. Until then, shut up

  • @L3WIS26 dude, i already explained what linux is above - it's a kernel. i also stated that free software refers to ethics, as in freedom, not price. that is more accurate than his 9min video. and i don't need to make a video on what linux is ~ it's called go look up linux in wikipedia, which is what this guy should have down (at the very least) before making a video on the subject.

and if i chose to make a video on linux, the info would be accurate. unlike his BS. shut up? FU, dumbass

  • There is another way to try Linux. Some distros, Ubuntu and Fedora, for example, have Live CDs which you can put in your disk drive, reboot your computer, and you can try it out before you install!

  • This guy sucks. Do your homework before you try to inform others. Most of your info are plain WRONG!

  • I have the same clock as you

  • So I guess Linux us not for the average computer user right?

  • Comment removed

  • You' re great

  • It's NOT an operating system dork fest! Linux is a kernel! KERNEL!

Don't mean to be bashing you or anything but putting the sarcasm aside it took me a long time to grasp the idea that there is a difference between the "kernel" and the "operating system". The key here is that an operating system is a "system" full of software to make the computer run. THINK: OS = many small programs | Linux = a stand alone kernal or program

  • @bearson2006 and technically Linux can be called an operating system when it's packaged with other programs it uses to run the computer. Thats what you see when you download a "distribution", a package of programs & linux all put together to make an "Operating System". So keep learning, and reading, and coding and you will see what I am talking about. Linux is Awesome!

  • Is Linux good enough to run a website?

  • @zahaj Lol........

  • I know this isn't relevant, but...the dude has a subway poster O.o

  • Linux, assuming Ubuntu, is an alternative O/S that actually can load into Windows as a "program" - great to have around when/if your windows system fails as on the machine I am using now. it can also run old equipment that Vista or 7 will not - example my Epson P1260 scanner. won't run on "7" runs perfectly on Simple Scan.

  • Thank you for the informative video, im new and it helped a lot

  • Virtualisation depends on what kind of virtualisation you're talking about.

KVM (Kernel Virtualisation Management within Linux) using is allot faster, up to 70% faster than Software virtualisation, like Microsoft Virtual PC (which you have to hack to get Linux working with that one), Vmware player works allot better.

Then you install Linux within say vmware player. You could yes have say DOS v4, WIndows 98, XP and 7, then have say 25 different versions/distro's of Linux on the same machine.

  • Isnt an operating system a visual representation of what your computer is doing ?

  • @blackhawk1804 No. Operating system runs manages all the other software what can give you a visual representation of tools.

There are two operating system architecture. Monolithic and Server-Client. Linux is monolithic operating system. It is oldest and first architecture and name for it was long time ago a kernel. Linux kernel is the Linux operating system.

Server-Client is microkernel + servers in userspace. Operating system does not need to have a user interface, those are other softwares.

  • linux and mac and windows are the best operating systems<3

  • Why is there a Subway sandwich poster on your wall?

  • Watching videos on ubuntu is actually hard to do without getting a modification, which is illegal in some countries.

  • i Love Linux. i just Hate the Common Bug Regressions with each new Revision though. if i could say one thing to My fellow Linux developers it would be this. " STOP FIXING THINGS THAT AREN'T BROKEN " But other then that Linux is a Total Win in My book. :-)

  • Thanks for the breakdown into layman's terms. It DID help me grasp what Linux essentially is. Just curious: why do you have on your wall a poster of a sandwich?

  • @Nuttfair One look at the damn comments would've shown you that. Just seven spots down is one. How do you not notice that before commenting? People need to be more observant...I fear for the day this generation enters the workforce. We're all doomed...

  • @Nuttfair Dude, you're like the tenth person to reply to me for something I said over three months ago. Shut the fuck up already. I get it, now go away. Jeez...

  • wow i also didnt know you could have more than one operating system. im not sure if this guy knows what he is talking about.

  • wtf? ive only ever heard of windows and mac lol i had no clue there is more.

  • LINUX IS SHIT

  • @sanctusen666 idk what you have seen but i have to say there are some linux distro's that are better for windows and mac for different things... Ubuntu is good for the average non-gamer user even just based on speed

  • @TheIcantfindusername Not even that, just use playonlinux to install your favorite windows games ;)

  • I heard mostly ps3 fanboys talked about "linux" and I never really understood it and after this video, I still don't understand it. It sounds like a internet bottle drive? Its free and u get to "edit" it - reprogram it and then "hopefully make some money off it (thats why I say internet bottle collecting). Its no where near what others make it sound to be if I go by what this guy says, FAR FROM!! being anything cutting edge or going to take over the industry. I better keep researching though...

  • @07duncan17 yeah, good idea... keep on researching... on the internet. The internet that is being run by ~70% LINUX servers!!! (oh... and on about 92% of supercomputers) :)

  • Operating system is the middle man between the hardware and the software.

  • @Spyez actually that is the kernel

  • @TheIcantfindusername

I'm no computer genius, however, the kernel is the master program contained inside the OS. Just like the CPU is the brain of the hardware, the kernel is the brain of the software in the OS.

  • @Spyez

What you say is true for Server-Client architecture but not for monolithic.

Monolithic operating system is just the kernel like Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, SunOS and so on.

The whole operating system runs alone in kernel space. The operating system was not always called as such. It had other more popular names like master program, supervisor, core, nucleus and kernel. Then Server-Client architecture came where OS was sliced to parts, to microkernel and multiple servers.

  • @TheFri13

What I understand is that the kernel is the "heart" of the OS. The GUI interface and other features are just extras. Is that correct? The OS itself can function with just the kernel.

  • why is it a big deal that ps3 took linux down?

  • NERDS

  • Don't listen to those dumbass comments, you did a good job on explaining, I already know about computers but I would show this video to a beginner trying to learn. Keep it up

  • No offense, but you have no idea what you are talking about. I don't think you are qualified to try and teach people about these things. At least do some research and prepare before you talk. You even have some misconceptions about what an "Operating System" refers to. I don't want to be overly mean, I appreciate that you want to help people. But misinformation is always more hurtful than helpful.

  • I love ubuntu it's perfect I had windows on my Dell formally for gameing and windows corrupted so while I check out the hard drive I ran an older ubuntu I had and browsed with out a harddrive! Off course this mean puting the cd in the tray the whole time but it worked while I was fixing my hard drive so I decide that when u fixed it would run unbuntu. It's great for java and flash games and with wine you can run other games if you take the time to configure them right ( kinda hard). But Linux i

  • he dosen't have a clue what he's talking about xD

  • Linux isn't the operating system, it's the Kernel.

  • ubunti and boobumtoo goes to kungfoofoo and KDE and LDI or PPQ?

  • @PARADOXADOR

You just demonstrated my point perfectly

  • "What is Linux?"

Good job not answering the question in the title of your video!

  • @hairybudda ya he did, it is an OS

  • your facorite linuz diatribution dude

  • rubix cube!

  • Someone help me! i dont have the "Applications/Places/System" menu. What to do?

  • Nice product placement...

  • at 2:20 he finally starts to tell me what it is -.-

  • "What is Linux? "

A broken record that plays every 5 years during the last 20 years the song "Our day on the desktop will come"?

  • Can i ask u a very helpful question, on my computer im currently running linux ubuntu, on windows 7 before it had picked up my wireless im running linux ubuntu 10.10 (most recent) and its telling me it doesnt pick up my wireless driver, i've tried many thingz and have asked many others and am getting frustrated by the lack of internet, an also my computer is a toshiba satellite L665 which has been know for having this problem may you PLEASE help me because "nowadayas" i dunno who to to turn to

  • @UltimateGamer600 Join the club of people who tired Ubuntu and pulled their hairs out. Go back to Windows 7.... it's way better.

  • Wow I know youtube was invented to give everyone a voice but damn some ppl need to f$%^ing stay SHUT !!!!!!!!

  • IM A PC BITCH!

  • nerd

  • @gloriozov If you know what Linux is your a "nerd".

  • When explaining what an OS is, you should of just said it is what allows you to operate on your system :D

  • What a coincidence that i stumbled upon this video and Ubuntu 11 is also coming out today!

I'm going to try to dual boot that version, since I tried Ubuntu 10.4 and it started to boot but left me hanging at the copyright disclaimer message blank screen just before the boot setup. :S hopefully i'll have more luck..

  • wow...thats what lenux is..i cant believe sony took that away and people bitched about it..

  • yaaa, maybe you shouldn't try to explain what an operating system is....you seem to not have too much of a grasp on the concept.

  • You are not allowed to sell Linux. Hint Hint the resent Google vs Linux over Kernels.

  • "The brain in your computer"

    No, that's the cpu :p

  • @themanhunt1234 exactly what I was thinking

  • @themanhunt1234 meh its more like the heart because it lets the computer function meh /nerd

  • @themanhunt1234 "The brain in your computer, No, that's the cpu "

That silly piece of silicon is not even close to a brain.

  • @vlptr

Correct. However many make the connection between the CPU and the "brain". It is even mentioned on some CompTIA A+ revision videos.

  • We have the same shitty surround sound system :D

  • Can it make a beautiful woman appear before me

  • I've got a bazillion videos to choose from, maybe even more and you think I want to watch 10 min. of your poorly edited and rehearsed diatribe?

  • Isn't linux virus free or mean got its protection?

  • Linux is not a OS every thing is Linux on internet Ubuntu,SUSE are some made by the people that want to not just a system

  • ahem

    the cpu is the brain

  • @wasthatnormal CPU is brain dead without OS therefore your not quite right....

  • @wasthatnormal

    Cpu is the heart.

  • @yipyipmingow i suppose the bios could be thought as the brain? since without it you'd be fucked ^- ^

  • @wasthatnormal

Without the ram you'd be fucked. So you don't really make sense at the moment.

  • @wasthatnormal The operating system is the brain, the cpu is part of the body. think a little..without the operating system, you cant do shit on the pc.

  • @Hsocial from technical point of view, cpu is the brain, the hardware. Chemical reactions, thinking and such is the "software" running there.

  • @wasthatnormal Actually... it's more like the heart of the computer.

  • @wasthatnormal Actually... it's more like the heart of the computer. But technically the whole thing is a brain.. so yeah.

  • @wasthatnormal his talking about software wise dude, this has nothing to do with hardware.

  • @wasthatnormal hes talking about software not hardware

  • Is he pronouncing "Linux" correctly? Idk anything about this other than I just read that Linus Torvalds is the inventor, and I doubt he pronounces his name "lin-iss" rather than "ly-nis". Whenever ive read the word "Linux" ive presumed it was pronounced "ly-nucks". Of course, I dont know anything about this.

  • @BriggsStratton11 watch?v=5IfHm6R5le0

  • @CoverlessTech Thanks

  • @BriggsStratton11 They say Linux as that because of Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux project.

  • @BriggsStratton11 Yeah, on Wikipedia there is literally an audio clip with him saying 'This is how I pronounce Linux'.

He pronounces his name 'lin-iss', and Linux sort of like 'lin-ooks'

  • @BriggsStratton11 cause its from UNIX, Linus + UNIX = Linux

  • @BriggsStratton11 Linus is quoted as being more or less not caring about how you pronounce it, at one point he pronounced it lee-nooks but since moving to the US he's calling it Linux(with a short i) as seen in the Japan conference.

  • You can tell he doesn't know about Linux, and computers in general. This guy makes my head hurt. "Kinda doesn't run any games unless you use wine, which is emulation for linux. It's not worth it".

WINE is not an emulator. Also, most games run on linux now. WoW, Left4Dead, CallofDuty, check out winehq.com

  • i have linux but it wont let me download things well it does but it wont let me install them

  • Can I edit Linux?

  • WHY DONT YOU LINUX HIPPY COMMUNITS FREAKS REALISE IT IS SO OBVIOUS!! WHEN YOU HAVE OPEN SOURCE, THE CODE IS OUT THERE AND ANYONE CAN F**K WITH IT AND CHANGE IT TO DO WHATEVER THEY WANT. SOME CREDIT CARD COMPANY COULD START EDITING FIREFOX AND MAKE IT SO IT STEALS UR CREDIT CARD!!!!!! I TRIED LINUX ONCE AND IT GAVE MY WINDOWS A VIRUS. NOW MY CAP'S LOCK IS STUCK. THANK YYOU LINUX. NOT!!!

  • @KanyeTroll trolololo

  • lol KDE>GNU ? what a noob XD

  • You don't know anything about computer my friend.

  • you look kinda like Nick Swardson

  • GEEK!!!!

  • linux is your MOM

  • What Linux OS would you recommend for a person who wants to do games such as Wizard 101, Free Realms, and Fusion Fall on a computer build?

  • WINE is not emulation, bro. WINE freakin' stands for: Windows Is Not Emulated. Get your facts straight.

  • @HealyHQ Actually, WINE stands for WINE Is Not an Emulator. I don't know why people think it is an emulator. It's a compatibility layer. Maybe it's because initially it was an acronym for WINdows Emulator... I don't know.

  • @HealyHQ Close... but it's actually a recursive acronym, and stands for WINE Is Not an Emulator. (Which it's not... it's basically an API translator.)

  • @HealyHQ Close... but it's actually a recursive acronym, and stands for WINE Is Not an Emulator. (Which it's not... it's basically an API translator.) But in his defense, he doesn't sound like he's necessarily a serious programmer or anything... just a tech writer. I think the WINE team probably prefers the recognition more than anything else. =-]

  • @HealyHQ lynuks so much better than windows at spreadsheets

    watch?v=875AbZcWoCk

    -------------------------

    4Xi346

  • @HealyHQ Actually, WINE stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator" (redundant acronym).

  • @HealyHQ actually it's "Wine Is Not an Emulator".

  • @HealyHQ You mean "Wine Is Not an Emulator"

  • @HealyHQ heard it was Wine Is Not an Emulator for the acronym

  • I think is sad how people always mention how missing game compatibility is a negative point of Linux.. I mean, the games we're talking about were especially produced for Windows because that's what the mainstream uses. It's like saying "Well, a Wii is pretty good and fun, but, you won't be able to play PS3 games on it, sadly they are not supported by Wii"

  • I was watchin the clock in the back to see how much time I was wastin watchin this.

  • I thought that part of the linux contract was that you CAN'T sell it without major changes to the distribution.

  • can some one that knows answer this please. so i bought my new laptop and it has Windows 7. if i change it to Linux and i happen to want to restore my laptop. would i be able to do it? i have a recovery drive??/

  • @jayr809 Usually new pcs come with hidden allocation space before the primary partition, just make sure you don't delete that...and then you can use your windows recovery dvd to bring the computer back to factory defaults. To be on the safe side, I would also backup your windows partition using DriveImage XML so then you can restore it back if needed.

  • is linux good? is it better then PC windows?

  • @jayr809 NO heck, never.

  • hm.. who paid money for their OS?

  • For the love of God, OSX is pronounced OS10

  • i didnt understand ? so linux is a operatiing system? are you sure?

only kidding , thanks for the informative vid :)

  • FREE MEANS ITS FREE, REALLY? I THOUGHT I HAD TO PAY :( thums up

  • I still say "You-Bunt-OOO" lol. Been using since it 7.04 X(fce), I prefer G(nome) though, never liked KDE. It always seemed like a kiddish GUI to me.

  • I GOT LOST AT 1:40

  • i dont care what its call, to me linux is just the penguin os

  • This guy is such a geek.

Linux users need to get out more..

  • 1. Linux does play games. And it ain't that hard.

    2. There are no viruese in Linux.

  • @kg4bga Linux will run most all Windows games under Wine. I know WOW works.

  • I always explain that a os is: A computer is stupid. It cant do anything. Now you got all these devices in your computer. To let them talk to you and internally. For that you need some storytelling to let everybody (device or the person) talk with everybody. Now this has to be bound to rules. This rulebook is the os. On this you run software these are the tools you need to accomplish a specific task. kinda. It is so hard to explain something you completely understand:S Wikipedia it would be easy

  • Maybe you can do a video doing some common tasks, like email, web browsing, copying a file, etc. on KDE and GNOME side-by-side...

  • I run Ubuntu on one of my computers. I've never seen KDE in action. I've only used Gnome. What's the advantage of KDE over Gnome?

  • @HungryGuyStories None KDE is just more for people that like small Gadgets & Widget. I do care for it. Ubuntu however is dropping GNOME and Xorg both , and switching to Unity and it sucks bad.

  • Hey! A Rubix cube!

  • Linux has very few fps game, but there are a few I know of, Doom series, quake series, and an fps shooter game that I have forgotten the name of.

Linux is good because One time I accidentally went over my windows ntfs 256 folder depth limit. and used linux to remove the windows-broke folder =D.

  • first off, i like that your spreading the Linux word but do it right... read some more linux is not a OS just the kernel for a lot of os (Debian, SUSE, slackware, etc)

    WINE Is Not an Emulator

    etc

    etc

etc do some reading befor statg half truth

  • What about using Linux with XBMC?? Would that facilitate the use of video games????

  • Loads of free Linux games and lots of Windows games play very well on Linux. There is tons of free software from all categories... Many people use Linux and windows on the same machine using Virtualbox ... lots of people out there to help you and the very best computer techs also know Linux. Good overall video.

  • can i see your penis?

  • its so light wheight :)

  • @MrJemadux

no apple just doesnt like it

  • Why does he have a SUBWAY poster? hehe

  • Wine

    is

    not

    emulator

  • Thanks for spreading the good word.

  • Linux is NOT an operating system! It's just th kernel!

Operating systems (wich use the Linux kernel) are Debian, Mint (that's what I'm using), Ubuntu, Fedora, Redhat, CentOS, ...

  • @broederjacobs :) yeah dude but this is for beginners.

  • @broederjacobs True, Linux is just a kernel. Most of the other extra tools are part of the GNU project, that's why people call the operating system GNU/Linux. Debian, Fedora anf the others are a superset of this, that is, they add a topmost layer (most notably a graphical user interface) to the tools that make de GNU/Linux opertaing system.

  • @ags3006

I know, I've been using Linux Mint for quite a while now. It's just perfect! :D

Now trying to base an own project upon Linux Mint, en when I've got enough experience, maybe I'll try to do it from scratch.

  • @broederjacobs I totally agree with you, and Linux is indeed only the kernel, we should talk about GNU/Linux, however, since this video is (in my opinion) made for everyone who doesn't even know what "Windows" is (basically everyone ... ). This guy is trying to explain to people who only use their computer only to check their mail and stuff like that what an operating system is and what "Linux" is, which is kind of tricky...

  • @broederjacobs I bet he doesnt know the difference of GNU Linux and Linux :)

  • @broederjacobs well, technically, GNU/Linux is the operating system. Ubuntu, Fedora, etc are more like different brandings of that operating system

  • @broederjacobs it's neither it's a OS Platform or a Minimal Base based of Unix

  • @applefanpc

    WRONG.

Linux is actually just the kernel. However, the name is also used to refer to the family of operating systems wich make use of the kernel. However much Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, CentOS, ... may look like each other, they're still seperate operating systems, using the same kernel and sometimes the same desktop environment (wich makes them about the same in way of working and looks).

And indeed most distro's now (Ubuntu for example) are GNU/Linux distro's.
