  • man if my generation were to have an american freedom train today, someone would surely make a political correctness case out of it and claim it was offensive to those who aren't american.

We really need to do another american freedom train again.

  • when was this filmed?

  • 1:05 gave me cold chills :)

  • Why is it when I see these old steamers, I always think of "Field Of Dreams"; "Build it and they will come...."

  • hey... it still use in America...?

if yes... where i can find it....?

i'm very glad if you show it to me.....

  • Truthfully, the AFT paint is nice, but it lacks design. They couldn't paint an american flag or something on it?

  • @xxxDeath9572xxx i agree. it looks awesome like this but they should paint a flag ong the tender somewhere next time the do the American Freedom Train.

  • Isn't the Steam Engine chugging sound like music to ears !!! I love steam engines and the rattling & cranking sound are like rock music ;-)

  • That is such a sweet engine.

  • That's American right there.

  • cool I have an actual bachmann dcc american freedom train daylight and it cost me 185 dollars

  • Mr. Dick Samuels was on the caboose, he is the owner of the Oregon Pacific Railroad. That is one beautiful steam locomotive by the way!

  • Wow this brought back some memories. The last time I saw this train was when my late father was the engineer thru the state of Georgia in 1976. I posted some pictures we found after his death on Wikipedia.

  • Sure wish I could have pedaled beside this one like the other cyclists shown in the video! I only got to see the AFT and 4449 standing still at Ft. Gillem, GA during it's tour in 1976, but I do feel lucky that I got to see it at all. Thanks for posting this.

  • Ich liebe Dampfloks besonder die US Loks die haben so einen geilen Sound der ist mega Geil.

  • @Angelhase1 Tell Cockroach2008 that.

  • One thing I liked about 4449's AFT paint is the white trend around her wheels.

I wish they kept those when they painted her back to Daylight colors.

  • @ThomasRivette I liked the black when she was leased to BNSF

  • 4449 looks good in those colors, I think those are replaceable sides.

  • was that paint or was it a big decal job?

  • as patriotic as those colors are, She should remain in her original Daylight colors we All LOVE

  • Live the AFT colors! I miss 4449 in them.

  • I meant love

  • hey i think i remember you having footage of the 4449 when it was painted black and ran between portland and wishram and back? do you still have it and could you please post it up?

  • I did take footage in 2001 when it was painted black. I'll do my best to get it uploaded in a timely manner.

  • i was on this trip! it was a lot of fun.

  • Great looking steamer there!

  • didnt they stop the aft like 40 years ago

  • i think Doyal should let some of UP Engineers drive 4449 insted of him. It would be great experience for the engineers to drive a steam engine once in their careers.

  • They have the 844... but now for some of us BNSF guy's yes haha. But the hand signals in the cab and how to run a it is hard to just pass on to someone and work he has done with it he should be running it.

  • the 4449 shoudn't pull excursion trains she should have her own matching full trainset and pull normal passenger trains we all know she has power and can probably run about 80MPH

  • I would love to see that happen but with an average of 10 Gal of oil and a 100 Gal of water per mile no one could run it every day.

  • convert her back to coal

right now it would prolly be cheaper than oil

  • Hmm... a coal GS that would be interesting to see.

  • Natural Gas me thinks would work.

  • Maybe but would not be as good looking as oil you know that nice black ploom lol, but gas would work but I don't know how well it would run with it.

  • The desiels run on CNG, i see no reason why a steam locomotive couldn't. it would be cleaner, and you can always throw a little oil in there to get that plume.

  • Only one way to find out I guess... We should fix up the 4460 and try it on that first:)

  • yep. now next problem, who's money we spending.

  • there was a 5 chime on 4449 in the late 1970's

  • There was, then the whistle she has on now was put on along with the 5-chime in the early 80s, then in the mid to late 80s it had a 3 chime, then in the early 90s the 5-chime was removed, from the 90s to present it has it's current whistle.

  • None of the SP Northerns were built to burn coal. The GS-4, GS-6 and any other Southern Pacific Northern were fueled with oil. Why? Because oil locomotives let out less steam when working.

  • ok then...Natural Gas. Just about the same.or heck just rebuild her a little bit and get some coal ;)

  • Actually, the reason they burned oil was because in the area they ran their Northerns, oil was easier to get then coal.

  • Oil was SP's choice fuel because the bunker c sludge they used was dirt cheap and an afterproduct of the refining process. The engines ran with cleaner stacks as a side effect of that.

  • #4449 has a great Hancock 3-chime boat whistle. 01:30-01:40 was the best in my opinion.

  • Ha. I remember this. I see myself
