I used to eat those ramen/yakisoba packets when I first came to Japan until I realised how little nutrition they had. Basically a carb/salt concoction you can get from any conbini. There is such a good variety of healthy Japanese foods especially fish and seafood including seaweed. Not the average Westerner's diet, but definately work a look! Japan has a lot super-foods that this doesn't really cover. There is a lot to discover in a Japanese supermarket.
I'm not a huge bread eater, I only eat two or three slices a week. I miss being able to buy bread in packs less than 10 slices. Here, you almost always have to by the whole goddamn loaf (which consists of about 24 slices!!) It takes me more than a month to go through them all. Especially during the warmer months, by the time I've eaten half of the pack, the rest is already moldy and smells funky!
Also, Japanese bread tastes FAR better than anything you can buy in supermarkets in the US!!
Ha you know what's funny, I actually read a Goosebumps book a few years back that I haven't seen or read since I was younger and to be honest they are quite well written and interesting! So no worries, it isn't weird having an R.L. Stine craving.
fruit can still be quite pricey. well, at least in iwate it still is, not too sure about the current tokyo prices. veggies are good and cheap though :)
the more I watched your vids with comments, the more I feel life of your personality is likable.what is ur most favorite food brand? I like that churumera ramen most of all instant ones.
I have all but 3 of the goosebumps books(still looking for them) and a couple fear street books. ^.^
If you like R.L Stine you should give Christopher Pike a try. He has done a children's series like Goosebumps called Spooksville. He also has a huge Young Adult series of books like fear street. I own them all. lol
Actually until it was mentioned, I never did notice the lack of popcorn in the junk food area... I do have some RL stine, if you want them let me know. I just don't have goosebumps.
One of the big things my friend couldn't find at first (he lived in a mid-sized town in Saitama) was brown rice. He eventually found a decent supplier after some searching.
within any group of people there are going to be ignorant individuals. I personally have not experienced racism in either Tokyo or Iwate. Is it out there? Yes. Have I seen it first hand? Not really.
dude shut the fuck up u little pussy bitch about racism in japan racism in japan does not rly exist onyl if your trying to look for it you will find it so shut ur mouth
hmm, wait I'm not sure who this comment was directed towards. All I'm saying is that I have never seen or felt racism here, but as in any country in the world there has to be one person who does not like foreigners. I quite like Japan, I would not be living here by choice again if I didn't, I feel safer here than back in the states. All I'm saying is racism is everywhere in the world, not saying Japan is racist as a whole or even majority. So I'm confused as to the direction of your comment?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
shut the fuck up you crack whore you dont know nothing about japan ur just one of those dumb fucks who ask dumb questions, there isnt any rascism in japan unless you are trying to look for it i have been in japan for 3 week and i never saw it
yeah i was quite pleased with that. one of my goals this year is to learn how to cook, so the cheap produce and veggies have proved to be excellent for me.
Great video! I love these series of videos. $20 for everything you got is quite the deal. Question - do grocery stores over there (the chain ones at least) offer anything similar to a club card membership? Sort of like extra savings for people who sign up for the card.
I really like how you directed this video. Instead of just filming your entire trip and uploading it, you just showed clips and edited it together with what you got at home. Really nice.
I'd be curious to know how the prices stack up against similar spots in Tokyo... I have to imagine that the same shopping excursion would be significantly more expensive than $20, but maybe not?
sorry rodger, but i gotta agree :-) why dont you ask some japanese friends if they can tell you how to make something homemade? plus and i cant help saying this, being a health nut and all.... but why all the quick/convenient foods?????? poptarts, instant ramen/soba, etc?
At the end of this video I noticed those Bulldog brand sauces. Honestly, I could drown almost everything in this stuff, it's really great. Unfortunately, it's a hard to get item here in Europe and quite expensive.
I had no idea that there was such a huge amount of convenience food items in regular grocery stores. Are people still able to cook nowerdays? What about the quality of these ready-to-eat products? Are they generally top notch?
yeah, i've picked up popcorn at yamaya about a month back haha. didn't see any poptarts though at the one i went to, but i'll be sure to give it another look lol.

Neo Toast? That is a humorous name. They use Stevia in Japan as a substitute for sucrose and fructose, do they not? It is supposedly healthier.
