  • Wow, pretty soon, it'll be two years...

  • TToTT iwate swan!!

  • "Goosebumps" .... :) brings back my childhood.

  • I used to eat those ramen/yakisoba packets when I first came to Japan until I realised how little nutrition they had. Basically a carb/salt concoction you can get from any conbini. There is such a good variety of healthy Japanese foods especially fish and seafood including seaweed. Not the average Westerner's diet, but definately work a look! Japan has a lot super-foods that this doesn't really cover. There is a lot to discover in a Japanese supermarket.

  • RIP!

  • do you speak or know japanese?

  • I'm not a huge bread eater, I only eat two or three slices a week. I miss being able to buy bread in packs less than 10 slices. Here, you almost always have to by the whole goddamn loaf (which consists of about 24 slices!!) It takes me more than a month to go through them all. Especially during the warmer months, by the time I've eaten half of the pack, the rest is already moldy and smells funky!

Also, Japanese bread tastes FAR better than anything you can buy in supermarkets in the US!!

  • R.I.P Rodger

  • -sigh- rest in peace =/

  • wish i could lived in Japan :'(

how does it feel living in JAPAN??

  • you can do anything in this world

  • How much did you pay for one of those sushi boxes?

  • 1.35USD

  • That´s super cheap!

  • When people go to supermarket around evening, most fresh foods has big sale, because they have to throw away anyway.

  • YES RITZ! I eat Ritz more than I inhale oxygen.

  • Haha the intro was great xD

  • POCKY IS AWESOME.

  • Shizzle Swan, watching your recent vidz makes me wanna start "vloggin" -vlogging again^^ Damn right!

  • haha you should go for it :)

  • @TkyoSam Yeah you should get on that shizzle T-dawg!

    Fo sho'

  • I love your videos, dude!

  • ur new look looks good~

  • You shaved off your beard and moustache....why?

  • how far is the grocery store from your place??

  • about a 2 minute walk, so quite close.

  • I loved Gooseeebump books when I was a kid! I hope you enjoy them! Can I ask, what camera do you use?

    Great video, keep them coming!

    Wilder

  • canon powershot sd1100

  • Ha you know what's funny, I actually read a Goosebumps book a few years back that I haven't seen or read since I was younger and to be honest they are quite well written and interesting! So no worries, it isn't weird having an R.L. Stine craving.

  • So is fruit more reasonable in Tokyo now?

  • fruit can still be quite pricey. well, at least in iwate it still is, not too sure about the current tokyo prices. veggies are good and cheap though :)

  • Half of 3.70 is 1.85!

  • thus I am an english teacher and not a math teacher haha.

  • Hahaha

  • Me, You, Grocery store= Us pigging out :D

  • +me

  • lmfao alright!

  • It's pretty amazing to think your already on 12

  • i know haha. perhaps even more amazing is that I was filming episode 15 today.

  • lol such a man's shopping :) but the fillets of meat and the veg n fruit look very fresh and tasty

look at all that sushi. I'd lose about 5 stone in 2 weeks if fresh sushi was that cheap in the UK

  • the more I watched your vids with comments, the more I feel life of your personality is likable.what is ur most favorite food brand? I like that churumera ramen most of all instant ones.

its getting cold out here.stay warm.

  • I could live off of Yaki Soba. Im serious. :D

  • Have to say, I am LOVING the mini-pumpkin on the kitchen table!

  • Lol at all the Pocky.

  • they dont have poptarts!?

  • Neo Toast? That is a humorous name. They use Stevia in Japan as a substitute for sucrose and fructose, do they not? It is supposedly healthier.

  • I have all but 3 of the goosebumps books(still looking for them) and a couple fear street books. ^.^

If you like R.L Stine you should give Christopher Pike a try. He has done a children's series like Goosebumps called Spooksville. He also has a huge Young Adult series of books like fear street. I own them all. lol

  • 0:45 Ohhh I love Pretzs, almost as much as els!

  • Actually until it was mentioned, I never did notice the lack of popcorn in the junk food area... I do have some RL stine, if you want them let me know. I just don't have goosebumps.

  • it is usually after 5pm in most cities but if the store is really overstocked they'll discount it sooner.

  • What i love about you is that you do the things that no ones does but that are really interesting. Cool stuff. ;) cheers

  • yay Swan your beard is gone, looking sharpe. ^_^

  • awesome..and you look younger again now, like old school tokyo swan :P

  • One of the big things my friend couldn't find at first (he lived in a mid-sized town in Saitama) was brown rice. He eventually found a decent supplier after some searching.

  • Swan ... I've heard of japanese peaople are pretty racist whit white persons

    its this true

becouse i love japan and I want to go someday ....somehow ^__^

  • within any group of people there are going to be ignorant individuals. I personally have not experienced racism in either Tokyo or Iwate. Is it out there? Yes. Have I seen it first hand? Not really.

  • hmm, wait I'm not sure who this comment was directed towards. All I'm saying is that I have never seen or felt racism here, but as in any country in the world there has to be one person who does not like foreigners. I quite like Japan, I would not be living here by choice again if I didn't, I feel safer here than back in the states. All I'm saying is racism is everywhere in the world, not saying Japan is racist as a whole or even majority. So I'm confused as to the direction of your comment?

  • ok tanks

  • Your show rocks!!!!

  • he is talking to me don't worry about

  • U SHUT UP BITCH I NOT TALKING TO U

  • Wow, you got a lot for $20, particularly with all the produce.

  • yeah i was quite pleased with that. one of my goals this year is to learn how to cook, so the cheap produce and veggies have proved to be excellent for me.

  • sadly for me i won't be eating sushi like that because i can't stand the cucumber in sushi

  • Love this episode!! Wonderful!

  • from the small portions to the selection of food ive seen people buying puting on weight in Japan should be a little bit less of a problem than usual

  • Great video! I love these series of videos. $20 for everything you got is quite the deal. Question - do grocery stores over there (the chain ones at least) offer anything similar to a club card membership? Sort of like extra savings for people who sign up for the card.

Thank you again for these helpful videos!

  • yes they do, i have one for the grocery store featured in this episode.

  • Awesome video, thanks for uploading them so frequently!

  • there's Nothing wrong with R.L. Stine or liking him.

  • holy fuck food is soo cheap in japan i live in canada and my family usually spend upwards to 250 dollars a week

  • Comment removed

  • i have had that ramen before the one you pointed at first in the 4 pack i love that ramen how much was that one

  • about 200 yen.

  • I used to read all the goosebumps when I was a kid lol c:

I like these but make more J horror reviews please.

  • I was wondering how many books you received from the kind people of youtube. :)

  • 9 thus far haha.

  • lol I really like R.L. stine. is that weird? It is a lil weird, but that's okay. lol

  • I really like how you directed this video. Instead of just filming your entire trip and uploading it, you just showed clips and edited it together with what you got at home. Really nice.

  • Hehe im sure your girl friend watches this

  • Japanese Coco Pops! :-D

  • Wow $20 is awesome! Reminds me some of Bi-Lo. I hope you show your school next! Have fun with your "Goosebumps." :-D

  • Oh yeah Goosebumps. I read those while in middle school, good times, good times.

  • Oooo, clean face!

    Very cute. :3

  • You look so young in this episode with longer hair and a shaved face!

  • $20 for all that? Nice deal!

  • I'd be curious to know how the prices stack up against similar spots in Tokyo... I have to imagine that the same shopping excursion would be significantly more expensive than $20, but maybe not?

  • except for a 1/2 off sushi...could of been a shopping episode in any north american city.

a bit of a shame that you have travelled so far but your taste buds have stayed home.

  • sorry rodger, but i gotta agree :-) why dont you ask some japanese friends if they can tell you how to make something homemade? plus and i cant help saying this, being a health nut and all.... but why all the quick/convenient foods?????? poptarts, instant ramen/soba, etc?

    -anna :-)

  • Niku jaga would be good for Rodger to make.

  • I have indeed made that haha.

  • Didn't you get any tongue at the supermarket?

  • wow your lucky good produce for cheap

  • you finally shaved it!

  • You look like you are very tired. The bags under your eyes are huge.

  • pish posh. i detest. my eye bags are MUCH more HUGE.

  • I've always had large ones (that's what she said).

  • ZOMG at 0:48 i can hear kimi wo mamotte, kimi wo ashita by sambomaster playing in the background lol. awesome episode

  • i sent him some books . I hope it makes it . RL stine rules

  • neo toast?

  • Are you kidding me, $20? That's a great deal.

  • wow a booze section lol XD heheheh swan awesome shoppin vid japan has such a unique shopping experience ehhehehhe XD

  • at my store its 6 pm and all the fresh stuff is 50% off

Glad to see you got the camera out at the grocery store!

  • No Pop Tarts in Iwate Outrageous!

  • Noooo what happened to the beard? Nice vid dude, good to see you have the essentials like coca cola. ^_^ This video made me really hungry.

  • RL STINE IS AMAZING!

  • I am confused, I have heard fruits like apples were very expensive, but carrots and bananas are cheap?

  • apples, grapes, and oranges are pricey, but carrots and bananas are indeed cheap.

  • At the end of this video I noticed those Bulldog brand sauces. Honestly, I could drown almost everything in this stuff, it's really great. Unfortunately, it's a hard to get item here in Europe and quite expensive.

I had no idea that there was such a huge amount of convenience food items in regular grocery stores. Are people still able to cook nowerdays? What about the quality of these ready-to-eat products? Are they generally top notch?

  • the ready to eat things are better than the US counterparts in my opinion. But I like to cook my food personally.

  • Roger, would you kill me if I said that I already miss your awesome lumberjack beard?

  • Ha, it is ironic.

Without it, Swan look about 18-21 at most.

With it, he looks considerablely older, at least 23-26.

  • i know... i was mistaken for a high school student last week. crazy though huh?

  • My beard does the exact opposite, student without, teacher with.

It's weird when I'm asked what school I go to and then what I teach lol.

  • thanx just what I wanted to see...MORE JAPANESE FOOD!!! too bad I have to wait a year to go there again

  • and the only real big shops are mostly in the main citys.. alot of the small stores are closing for the big ones getting bigger and bigger..

  • yeah, i've picked up popcorn at yamaya about a month back haha. didn't see any poptarts though at the one i went to, but i'll be sure to give it another look lol.

  • Are they big on organic/vegan/raw food in their super markets? or specialty store like whole foods in america?

  • lots of organic and raw food, yes. as for speciality stores, haven't seen too many of those in my neck of the woods. i'm sure they are out there however.

  • No Natto?

    oohhh Bento

    YUM

  • not a fan of natto haha.

  • oh ok ^_^

  • that shushi looks really good

  • oh it was haha.

  • New presenter? He's good

  • I see you shaved :P
