I knew Brad van pelt personally,he was humble,a real genuine guy next door type.I attended his funeral,I witnessed his burial in oak hill cemetery in Owosso Mi. One of the nicest people I have ever met. He will be sorely missed here in his hometown of Owosso Michigan. Rest in peace Brad. Jim Carmody
I think Brad Van Pelt won 7 letters in 3 sports (football, baseball and hoops) at MSU, & was maybe their best all-around athlete. I saw him pitch there in 1971, on my way home from classes one day. Had to git before he finished, but I remember (a) he looked awfully strong for a pitcher, (b) was clearly fast, and (c) nobody was hitting him. He's just behind Robin Roberts (Phillies Hall of Fame pitcher) on MSU's 1-season K record list. Had 40 or so rebs in 2 hs hoops games, too. Football?
SHOCK-GRIEF-PAIN Brad Van Pelt may be gone, but he still stands heads above most. I knew Brad personally. He was a man that would give you the shirt off his back and never worry about getting anything in return. A GENTLE GIANT. I opened a restaurant with him, in Santa Barbara. Duffy Daugherty's Gridiron Grill. It was a great time. In the two years we worked together, I don't think I ever saw him NOT smiling. It was a great shock to find this. There's much sorrow now. Rest in Peace Brad Van Pelt.
As "nonthere' wrote, I feel exactly the same. I have lived and died with the NY Giants since I was 6 years old, and i'm now 41! They SUCKED so bad in my school daze, and BVP was all there really WAS with the Giants back then (well, Bob Tucker was the man) but still, Brad was an EXTREMELY underrated player, fast, smart, quick, strong, just awesome. I feel had the Gmen been better, he would have been given far more credit as a LB...God Bless Brad, you were a childhood blessing!
You can't imagine how hard it was to be a steadfast Giant fan back then. Brad Van Pelt gave us all something to hang onto. When we played ball in the street or between the Conduits (dodging the dogshit) I always wanted to be him and yes, I had a No. 10 jersey. It's hard to think of his career in that he reminded me (or vice versa) of Don Mattingly. Both those guys should have had rings.
i'm from owosso mi, and bvp was the greatest person to ever come from this town. We will never see his likes again im sure. We've all been very proud of him, proud to call him "ours". You will always be in our hearts. R.I.P Brad, you will always be our hero.
If the Giants retire Van Pelt's Number 10, you think Eli will still be allowed to wear his number?
