  • @sunny09140

    thanks for the lyrics

  • @sandybarbie1234

The lyrics are from another such gem from India "Pandit Narendra Sharma" .

  • @sunny09140 ..this is a translation by Pandit Narendra Sharma...the original lyrics in Assamese are Bhupen Hazarika's....it's too bad the rest of India is so unaware of the power of Bhupenda's writing, touching every aspect of humanity, songs that are greater than 1000, only few have been translated and in translation, even Gulzar has admitted, he who has translated a few of his songs that he has not been able to do justice

  • @Bhupendafan Thanks for the clarification. I learnt another good thing today ! I appreciate you making all of us aware of the facts.

  • Your voice was as sacred as the ganga itself. RIP.

  • Ek boond kabhi paani ki mori ankhiyon se barsaaye... :(

  • His voice sends a shudder through your spine, touches the core of your heart, and pushes you asking for more...when you realize that the legend, the golden-voiced, Bhupendra Hazarika is no more...The heavens must be sweeter now.

  • @10Fountainhead "The heavens must be sweeter now" - That has to be the most moving tribute I ever came across :((((((

  • @akki4play the assamese lyrics needs a few changes it actually goes like this:

"Bistirno parorey, ahankhya jonore, hahakar sunio nisabdth nirovey,

Burha luit tumi, burha luit bua kiyo.........."

it means : O mighty Brahmaputra (Burha Luit) even after hearing the cries of the uncountable people of so extended banks, why do u still continue to flow!

  • @porous999 Thank you.. I just updated it.. thanks for ur great help..

  • @porous999 Hey i would be great if u could post the entire lyrics (in english) with the meaning

  • This is not a copy of an English song. This song is in Raga Bhopali which is as old as time.

  • RIP great master

  • Songs like this....should be promoted evrywhere.......it moves you from inside......

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika a grt artist a grt man...has passed away.....may his soul rest in peace....

  • Old man river. Paul Robson

  • @desdenova

Very nice song. But it's a copy of a English song

  • @MrSylhetibabu @MrSylhetibabu

It is not a really "copy" of Old Man River, but definitely draws inspiration from the masterpiece by Paul Robeson, who happened to be Dr. Hazarika's mentor in Columbia University. Dr. Hazarika had always attributed the source to Robeson's song - you may check this (at 2:25 min) youtube.com/watch?v=ePjmB4-perI

The word "copy" insinuates plagiarism an is an injustice to the genius Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was.

  • @siddhartha161 You are right...this is completely his own song, definitely inspired by his mentor Paul robeson's Old Man River, he always said that in his concerts how Paul Robeson was a huge influence in his life so whoever says this song is copied is basically ignorant...

  • A VERY VERY BIG THANKYOU FOR THIS POST.

  • thnx........finally my search is over this is real tribute to brahamputra.

  • Great evergreen song touching the melodies...all time great song from the great legend Dada.

  • great , thats why he hot DADASA FALKE award

  • though, it is a beautiful song rendered by Dr.Bhupen Hazarika, the lyrics seem more appropriate to equally big and important river of north east India i.e. Brahmaputra

  • i really dont have words to appreceate this.......................waaah bhupen da....waaaaaah

  • Today's youth must feel ashamed of themselves, running after the ugly commerce of malls and multiplex to catch a bollywood shit playing..

  • Well guys, uploading this song, was the great honor.. it will complete 3 years on Sep 9, 2011.. We will never find this type song ever again.. My salute to Padma Bhushan Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.. I feel Proud to be an Indian..

  • I cried after listening.

  • song for a civilization, where & how the great subcontinent evaluated into today's modern Indian subcontinent. I doubt, if he didn't sing in Hindi, how many Indians would care about such a great singer. I can prove about so many Indian great singers/compositors, who are popular abroad but not in India, just because, they either do not speak/knows/sing in Hindi or don't care about them unless local media start talking about them. How many Indian knows, Cliff Richard is from UP, Freddy from Mumbai

  • wow. what a voice and music.. typical signature of Dr. hazarika. hats off

  • Beautiful and melodious song in Assamese. The calling the "mother water" who was really the mother of "development of civilization" is apt even today.

  • Bhupen Hazarika is a great musician with special original touch. Wish and pray that he will recover soon.

  • very beautiful...very true...and very heart touching.....!

  • hats off..! sir Bhupendra Hazarika. and also pray to God that u may get speedy recovery from your sickness and get well soon....

  • oh ganga ki dhar, nirbal jan ko,

sabalsangrami, samagrogrami, banati nahi ho kyun?…………….

(Oh flow of Ganges, why don't you make the weak people stronger, make the villagers unite to fight for their rights)

    Anparjan, aksharheen, anginjan, khadyoviheen

    netravhiheen, dikshmon ho kyun?…….

(innumerable people are illiterate, letterless, without food, blind,

Why are you showing these blind people the path of devotion..?)

    Ganga behti ho kyu ?

  • why when we call ganga "maa", make it dirty....my heart cries seeing our holy river like this :-((

  • @ Saintchap the song was not just copied....Dr. Bhupen Hazarika did paid his gratitude to original singer....as he always mentions his name when ever he sings the song.

  • THIS SONG IS NOT ORIGINAL,,, ITS A COPY OF PAUL ROBSONS SONG OLD MAN RIVER 1936... CHECK OUT URSELF... WE CALL BAPI LAHIRI, PRITAM AND ANNU MALIKE DO THIS....... CHECK IT OUT URSELF

  • @saintchap.... It may.... But that doesnt lessen the happiness , warmth, patriotism and compassion it brings to the heart.....I wish you could have felt that instead....

  • What a song, great compilation by Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, one of the great son's of the soil.

  • amazing voice it's directly touch our soul and very pure words used in diz song i love it

  • true said..!

  • Hai friends iam mahesh from chennai, kya song hai ye hiss gana ko sunkar shri Bhupen ji ke paav me mere man ko rkdhiya maine....... Bharth Matha Ki Jay.......

  • Very very good song ... brilliant lyrics and of course sung by legends....

  • Philosophy apart this song is about the call to all people living on this land to rise and take responsibility for themselves and the society around them for a better, brighter life.

The addressing to Ganges is just an excuse by the writer of the poem.

  • Every culture began close to river/water sources to survive and hence mankind's very long and deep association with water and its ability to both give life and destroy life. No point arguing that one such song is then similar to another because that is reality across cultures.

  • absolutely right..

  • I disagree dasamitabh. I don't know the song old man & river. But this is clearly about Hindu belief in river Ganga. All religious rituals taking place at river Ganga. This song condemn that all and asking why even bother flow. River & flow of water is regarded as souce of life (I agree with that part) but life it offers is worthless (I agree with that too).

  • The river in the song 'old man river' by Paul Robeson refers to the Mississippi river, which like the Ganga is culturally symbolic in the US. The original song talks about the struggles of the african-american community and the fact that they kept on moving forward inspite of all their challenges. Its unfortunate that a person of mr.hazarika's talent decided to pass on the song, which was clearly copied / adapted as his own creation. Btw, I do like this song as well........

  • Yes, you may have point. But every word of this song is about India and Hindu's belief where they worship river Ganga. In this song he is questioning all that in harsh, but in civil manner. Now if one is to write a thesis on it. It is not all that wrong to get idea from two different books (in this case poem) and make one that reflects your own point of view. It being done all the time. 'Coping' ang Getting Idea is two different things. Hindu worship river Ganga way before America.

  • As per Wiki enclyclopedia:

Old Man River is symbolically an American version of the famous Russian folksong The Song of the Volga Boatmen. Both songs tell the story of those who live and work on a river.

Paul Robeson has also sung "The Song of Volga Boatman" in russian, using same (or similar) melody as he did with Old Man River.

This is genius of Bhupen Hazarika that he is using it to depict our problem.

  • There is no word called Hindu in all of our ancient scriptures/Vedas/Upanishads or Puranas.

Hindu is a word given by the British to all people living on this side of the Indus river.

  • The word 'hindu' is neither Sanskrit, nor Dravidian and did not originate in India, which was known as Bharata. In Persian literature the word Hindu-E-Falak is found. By 13th century, Hindustān emerged as a popular alternative name of India, meaning the "land of Hindus".The usage of the word Hindu was further popularized by the Arabic term al-Hind referring to the land of the people who live across river Indus. It was not used in Indian writings until the 17th century.

  • Great Info.. thanks..

  • and what about Hindu word coming from word Sindhu or Indus. Now we have to learn our history from an American. thats brilliant.

  • Comment removed

  • @Pmd9013 : very nice, great info

  • The word "hindu' was not used in Indian writings until the 17th century. The term Hindu was originally a secular word meant to describe all inhabitants of India and it acquired religious and communal overtones during British Raj

  • agreed..

  • In the Vedantist /Hindu /Sanathan Dharma God and his Existence are not separate from one another.

Hence we find in India ,worshiping the Nature, Rocks, Animals, Trees, Mountains, Rivers, Sun, Moon and all Goodness.

    bristir nor parore..aashyankhyo jonore

    hahakar huniu..nisobde nirobe

burha luit tumi....burha luit buwa kio??

this songs is all about the floods in north east by the mighty river "BRAHMAPUTRA"[interesting fact "BRAHMAPUTRA" means the son of lord "BRAHMA" and it is the only male river in the country] and the chaos created due to the flood....BRAHMAPUTRA is Known as LUIT in Assam............
