  • Crewmen are 0311/0313s. Scouts are 0311s. After infantry school, if you are sent to an LAR Bn. as an 0311 you'll be a scout. Depends on needs of MC. It's all fluid though depending on your deployment and AO. Just about my entire 2nd deployment was spent on the ground in urban areas. As a vehicle commander I was given a team leader billet (sometimes squad leader) on the deck.

  • can you apply to be a scout after SOI because i want to do this not infantry

  • LAR scouts are infantry, LAR crewmen are also infantry. Any 03 MOS is infantry. Again, it all depends of the needs of the Corps at that time. Usually right around halfway through SOI you start hearing talk about how the station assignments are going to shake out. My SOI company (the 0311 half) was sat in bleachers while they asked for 0313 volunteers. Everyone's SOI experience differs in that regard. Really no way to tell exactly what you will encounter.

  • @echoThreeGolf whats the difference for the scouts? is it basically just smaller units, and instead of Humvees you roll out in LAV's? would you consider LAR more motivated and trained than normal infantry? i would assume LAR would more do recon for MEU's and do quick raids on targets and such, am i right?

  • @marleynrs8 yes an LAR platoon or company is going to be smaller than a straight-leg platoon or company. The LAV fighting platform is so quick & versatile and the way LAV's compliment the scouts on the deck (and vice versa) is a beautiful thing when getting after an objective. Basically we did it all but yes, i would say we're more suited to the high-speed mission rather than the conventional push. And I would not comment on any other unit's motivation.

  • @echoThreeGolf i read that the textbook mission for LAR is terrestrial recon. does this mean just driving on until you get shot at? i know they led the way in Iraq. the reason i ask about motivation, is because i wouldn't want to be with people my lives depend on who don't even want to be there. i've heard the only way to get into LAR is to volunteer during SOI, and that LAR is the best grunt duty. is this all true?

  • @marleynrs8 ya that sounds about right for a textbook definition of our mission. this could take the form of sending out patrols to do recon on a new AO where you are looking for recent enemy activity, gathering intel from locals, recording data about terrain features (wadi crossings, chokepoints etc.).. missions are all intel driven whether the intel comes from way up high or from your own internal intel cell. patrols, raids, cordon & knocks, hvi capture, assaults, security, we do it all.

  • @echoThreeGolf so then, whats the real difference between you guys and Recon other than the LAV's. that sounds basically like you're Recon with light armor? how do you remain unseen with those large vehicles? also, what's your opinion on Recon, should I skip Infantry to Recon if i decide i want to?

  • @marleynrs8 LAR is a specialized component within the conventional USMC infantry fighting force. Force/Bn. Recon is the USMC's contribution to our country's special operations community. If this interests you, i suggest focusing on becoming an 0311 first. u don't want to talk about it as if you can simply walk on, because you cannot. i have a very hight opinion of our Force/Bn. Recon units.

  • @echoThreeGolf oh man, ive heard the stories about getting in, so trust me I understand you can't just get in.

  • @marleynrs8 i tried to get into how to become LAR in previous responses. the long and short of it is, it all depends on the needs of the MC. your best bet is simply to follow the path toward becoming 0311 and let it play out during SOI. as for moto, just worry about urself, and if you meet a turd (every MOS has 'em), don't hang out with them. if your stuck with them, try and correct 'em... pick up rank faster and this becomes easier.

  • @echoThreeGolf the reason i asked about moto was because i read somewhere that what happens is guys join infantry cause they think it will be cool and fun, but when they decide they dont like it all they become a shitbird and lower quality of their unit. but, during SOI, is there a "dream sheet" of sorts to apply for available units? this happened to one LAR guy I talked to.

  • @marleynrs8 you could apply that to any branch of the military. it's just a fact that not all young adults are ready for the huge responsibility or the culture shock. i enlisted at 28 so I was a bit better prepared. In SOI, if the numbers and requirements of the MC are flexible, the command will pass on that flexibility to the students via 'wish lists' etc. again though, there is no way to accurately predict what your situation will be. this stuff is not static.

  • @echoThreeGolf ok thanks. i dont think it will be too flexible in the near future, some guys can't even get infantry spots right now, so alot are taking artillery. anyways, it will be a couple more yrs for me so things will change. oh, and how long does it take to get a spot in Sniper School and go to an STA platoon. 2 years or so? i know some LCPLs have pulled it off. does LAR have STA's?

  • @marleynrs8 speaking only from observations i've made in LAR, you could definitely be attending pre-sniper and eventually sniper school at or around your two year mark. you've got a deployment under your belt, you've picked up Corporal, your PFT and rifle quals are excellent etc.. your platoon Sgt. will throw your name in the mix when those school seats open. transferring to some STA unit I believe happens no sooner than at time of your first re-enlistment.

  • @echoThreeGolf ok thanks. what are scout snipers doing in Afghanistan? I have a pretty good idea of what they were doing in Iraq, just from reading books. i personally think theyre a great counterinsurgency tool because they find the bad guys and learn the lay of the land, and act precisely.
