Angkor Wat is as Indian as Hinduism itself! Why would the "native people" of Cambodia build such an elaborate temple and include another culture's art and religion to adorn it, just because a few merchants interacted with them? I believe the Cambodians basically were dissatisfied with their own heritage, felt that what the Indians had going was more interesting (which was probably a case of "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence"), and decided to adopt the Indian's religion and idols for their own. And being powerful as they obviously were, they made it into the biggest and best.

Suryavarman was a Southindian king and the architecture on those temples is typical of southindian temples. India extended till Thailand and Cambodia in those times as it extended to Afghanistan in those times and Nepal.
