historic context? there is no contemporaneous extra biblical mention of jesus. funny, 1st century palestine is a very well documented time period and no contemporaneous historian of jesus mentioned anything about him. you'd think that healing masses or feeding multitudes from a few scraps, causing a riot on a high holiday or any of the other paranormal claims attributed to jesus would be worth a footnote. a few later 1st century historians mention christians. that's historical context!

@Danielezerable If you're referring to Servetus, when the Geneva city council found him guilty of heresy and had him burned at the stake, Calvin was just asked to testify at his trial. Calvin wasn't even a citizen of Geneva at the time and didn't have the authority to condemn the man. In fact, he tried to convince the council to execute him in a more humane way, by beheading (which is still harsh, but better than burning).

historic context? there is no contemporaneous extra biblical mention of jesus. funny, 1st century palestine is a very well documented time period and no contemporaneous historian of jesus mentioned anything about him. you'd think that healing masses or feeding multitudes from a few scraps, causing a riot on a high holiday or any of the other paranormal claims attributed to jesus would be worth a footnote. a few later 1st century historians mention christians. that's historical context!

@Danielezerable If you're referring to Servetus, when the Geneva city council found him guilty of heresy and had him burned at the stake, Calvin was just asked to testify at his trial. Calvin wasn't even a citizen of Geneva at the time and didn't have the authority to condemn the man. In fact, he tried to convince the council to execute him in a more humane way, by beheading (which is still harsh, but better than burning).

Further, not one Church Father ever argued that the Trinity had to be proved OUTSIDE Scripture. And who gave you the authority to decide who's the real Catholic? Remember, the Pope was infallible before 1965!

Also, God's #1 attribute, His defining attribute is not love, it's holiness. Holiness defines everything God says, and is, and does. Yes God is love and the love that God is is Holy. God is a jealous God, and the jealousy over which God gets jealous is holy. Holiness is something that denotes absolute moral perfection. Stop quoting half a verse, at least exegete it properly, all you're doing is equivocating. Catholics don't equivocate that much.

no, youre just not intellectual enough to take it all in context for some reason. Even the salvific love of John 3:16 is liited to believers. The whole verse reads Beloved let us love one another, for God is love. Collosians teaches that the beloved are the elect of God. Scripture also teaches that were to immitate God as His dear children, but not all are His children. All of these verses are written to believers. Jesus told the scribes they were of there father the devil.
