Have you gone into the well and saved the children? If so go back to Windia. Now, head south, you will see a pole on either side of the chasm. Sten can reach across that gap. That's probably what you need to know.

Formations? Normal is one front liner, two middle characters and one rear character. Scatter is three front liners and one rear character. Defense is one front liner and three middle characters.  And Parallel is two front and two rear.

Front = Does more physical damage with a higher critical rate and takes more physical damage.

Middle = No bonuses or negatives to damage.

Rear = Takes less physical damage, but does less damage and gets fewer criticals.

Just so you know, Sanamo's little act is actually one of the few things that were cut from the U.S. version's script. The dialogue is still there, of course, but the old translation fudges just what she says in order to get Ryu to come along (and what Granny admonishes her for doing).
