Some buddies and I went cruising all night, had a few beers, shot the s--t all night, did a little drag racing and played this type of GREAT music all night until daybreak, when I had to catch a bus for Ft. Gordon, GA.

Several reasons: they're more talented than the first ones that were called "The Crystals." They're looking good and sounding good. You'll may note that as the video begins, these Crystals are already receiving rousing applause -- don't know what they sang, but "He's A Rebel" is just an oncore.
Dee Dee is an original member, so it's ok for these three to sing the Crystals songs.....but really, it is kinda like "Cystal-mania", if you get my drift.

I have to agree. When does a group stop being that group. If thre's only one person left, it's not the original group. If they sing the song, that does not make them the original group. I went to see the Beach Boys once. There were only 2 of the 5 originals. I realise that one had died, but, to me, it was "Two Beach Boys and Some Other Guys."
@Fidelever Dee Dee is the one in center. She and La La Brooks (the lead singer on the right) are both from the original 1961 Crystals lineup. I don't think Dee Dee was ever a Crystals lead but I could be wrong. On the left is Frances Collins who replaced another member in 1964. I knew this group was impersonating the originals. The REAL Crystals recorded in the early 60's. These girls look too young to be the originals. I think it's wrong to do this. If a producer wants to assemble impersonators, he should at least use a different name than the original.

Have this whole concert on VHS video - there are acts like The Angels, Martha Reeves and Shirelles on the bill too. The entire concert is a bit flat, but a good opportunity to see the acts once again. These Crystals don't compare well to the orginal girls, especially the songs recorded by Darlene, but give them their due they put up a spirited live performance and sing well in harmony.

Well, the problem with groups going on beyond the original members is they almost always can't keep the magic going. It's not a matter of talent or caring but alchemy. The potion loses its powers. Jean Terrell said that even as the post-Diana Supremes were getting the same bookings, the same T.V. engagements and making a fortune for Motown, people complained the fire had gone out. And believe me the new Supremes were singing their hearts out and looking fabulous. The chemistry had altered.

Yes, Broadway productions are miked. Originally the microphones were lined up at the curtain of the stage and when you got to your number you stood in front of one of the microphones. Now often personal mikes are used attached to costumes. But, strangely, the actors still sing as if singing into a microphone. That's because it is hard to sing and move or dance at the same time. Some concerts are pre-recorded for the same reason.

The original record was recorded in LA, not Brooklyn, by The Blossoms, because Phil Spector wanted to beat Vicki Carr's version to the airways, so he just called them "The Crystals." The real Crystals were touring in New York and first heard the song on the radio, to their surprise. That Spector was always a rogue.

Hello all, these Crystals are not fake. The lady on the left is Dee Dee Kenniebrew. She has been in the group since the beginning eventhough she may have not sung on all their recordings. She has kept the group going with various ladies since the 1980s. In fact the lady singing lead is none other than Lisa Fisher who has been singing with The Rolling Stones for the past few years!
While no one can sound like Darlene Love, I think Dee Dee's group does a credible job.

These chicks look like fakes. Check out the pbs special with the surviving members. None of them are on this stage. There were groups of fakes Shangri-Las floating over the years. Many of these groups names were never copy written so shady promoters bought the names and put groups together. I believe the guitar player from the 80's girl group, Klymaxx did the same thing and she never sang or wrote a song for the group. Now she refuses to let the original members use their name unless she paid.

I have to agree. When does a group stop being that group. If thre's only one person left, it's not the original group. If they sing the song, that does not make them the original group. I went to see the Beach Boys once. There were only 2 of the 5 originals. I realise that one had died, but, to me, it was "Two Beach Boys and Some Other Guys."

@Fidelever Dee Dee is the one in center. She and La La Brooks (the lead singer on the right) are both from the original 1961 Crystals lineup. I don't think Dee Dee was ever a Crystals lead but I could be wrong. On the left is Frances Collins who replaced another member in 1964. If you haven't already, check out the "He's A Rebel" YT video from the same show; the video quality is a bit clearer and it's a just great! Best regards!

I knew this group was impersonating the originals. The REAL Crystals recorded in the early 60's. These girls look too young to be the originals. I think it's wrong to do this. If a producer wants to assemble impersonators, he should at least use a different name than the original.

Have this whole concert on VHS video - there are acts like The Angels, Martha Reeves and Shirelles on the bill too. The entire concert is a bit flat, but a good opportunity to see the acts once again. These Crystals don't compare well to the orginal girls, especially the songs recorded by Darlene, but give them their due they put up a spirited live performance and sing well in harmony.

Well, the problem with groups going on beyond the original members is they almost always can't keep the magic going. It's not a matter of talent or caring but alchemy. The potion loses its powers. Jean Terrell said that even as the post-Diana Supremes were getting the same bookings, the same T.V. engagements and making a fortune for Motown, people complained the fire had gone out. And believe me the new Supremes were singing their hearts out and looking fabulous. The chemistry had altered.

The term "legit" refers to the style of performing on the Broadway stage, a rather formal, project-it-out approach. The song needed a more teenage sound or an r & b sound which, of course, is what Darlene excelled at. "Legit" is short for "legitimate" as in the term "legitimate theater." My tutoring bill for $500 is in the mail. P.S. I've met both Love and Carr, both lovely and very bright ladies with capital Ls!

Can involve great emotion and interpretation, but all kept with the bounds of good manners. That will be another $500 and I guess you won't be dining well for a few years. Yes, Broadway productions are miked. Originally the microphones were lined up at the curtain of the stage and when you got to your number you stood in front of one of the microphones. Now often personal mikes are used attached to costumes. But, strangely, the actors still sing as if singing into a microphone. That's because it is hard to sing and move or dance at the same time. Some concerts are pre-recorded for the same reason.

The original record was recorded in LA, not Brooklyn, by The Blossoms, because Phil Spector wanted to beat Vicki Carr's version to the airways, so he just called them "The Crystals." The real Crystals were touring in New York and first heard the song on the radio, to their surprise. That Spector was always a rogue.

He wrote it under his MOTHER's name because he thought it might not 'sell' if he used his own name. I think everyone knows by now, that he wrote it.
Gene also wrote Hello Mary Lou (which Rick Nelson recorded). Just thought I'd throw that in here.

Hello all, these Crystals are not fake. The lady on the left is Dee Dee Kenniebrew. She has been in the group since the beginning eventhough she may have not sung on all their recordings. She has kept the group going with various ladies since the 1980s. In fact the lady singing lead is none other than Lisa Fisher who has been singing with The Rolling Stones for the past few years!
While no one can sound like Darlene Love, I think Dee Dee's group does a credible job.

Why do some artists, and shady promoters, insist on peddling this crap? What we have here is akin to a classic car totally rebuilt on knock-off and fraudulent parts -- it's basically a tribute group. It isn't genuine or the REAL thing if only the rear left rim is an original part, in other words.

These chicks look like fakes. Check out the pbs special with the surviving members. None of them are on this stage. There were groups of fakes Shangri-Las floating over the years. Many of these groups names were never copy written so shady promoters bought the names and put groups together. I believe the guitar player from the 80's girl group, Klymaxx did the same thing and she never sang or wrote a song for the group. Now she refuses to let the original members use their name unless she paid.
