  • I don't know if anyone noticed, but the tempo slows down by the end of the tune, folks.

  • @BassmanII right-think its cause of Greene.......lol

  • CB was here like 73? respect...

  • Honestly.........how could you dislike this...?

  • Great, really nice to hear this!

  • Thank the lord for YOU TUBE ; i CAN ENJOY ALL THE BASIE ARRANGEMENTS AND CONCERTS for the rest of my life. I WISH THIS WAS AVAILABLE THIRTY YEARS AGO AS I AM NOW 82. Now the rest of my life will be wonderful BIG SYD.

  • Who's on flute??????

  • Dang, Lin Biviano sounds good on this. Never knew how well he could play this style. And Butch Miles is a CLASS guy all the way

  • Man, that drummer is having the time if his life at 3:30. He's trippin' !

  • @Keebbee Butch Miles and his Shiteating Grin!

  • im in heaven fantastico

  • Could listen to this all day. :)

  • awesomme

    ))

  • Geez...I can't imagine how the Count managed the touring logistics w/such a big band--it must've cost a fortune moving those guys around, then you got hotels, meals, etc., etc., not to mention salaries! Like I said, it must've cost a fortune.

  • Jazz enthusiasts should pay special attention to the Montreux recordings. I heard Ray Brown's LA four in Ronnie Scotts and then a few days later I heard them at Montreux. It was like night and day. The reason - the Swiss TV had superior recording facilities and TV. There could be no fooling around. Ray Brown even broke a string - i have never known a bass string to be replaced so fast.

  • @alexkoh7 were you actually at Montreux? That would be incredible - so was I there in 1977 - but couldn't get a ticket to the Basie Concert. My great compensation was that I bumped into Ray Brown beween concerts - and have a photo with him. My japanese friend first time in Europe, crazy about jazz and plays bass(but I did'nt know it then) took the photo. I screwed up the photo with him and Ray. I am now his lifelong slave!!

  • Is that Sebastian Vettel on drums at 4.04 on. : )

  • @canterite the drummer is BUTCH MILES

  • Good sound quallity, very good

  • These guys are tight, awesome playing.

  • Where would they be without Freddie Green (rhythm guitar ) to hold it all together eh? That simple but vital thread that links the whole piece together.

  • they swing sooo hard!!

  • look at the drummer at 3:30 LOL

  • 2:56 just the sickest swing ever...

  • 3:30 lol @ the drummer

  • so amazing

Someone can tell me if that video is available ???

  • Oh what a jazz!!! :P

  • Who was The Count's bassist at that??

  • AMAZING!! I I wanted to born to new york for the music!

  • @jenjis556 If you love it like I think you do...you ARE a NY soul automatically!

  • @dggd In september i come in NY for 4 months and maybe more .. i hope to play jazz music in jazz club... or in big band jazz.. i hope god.. i am born for this..

  • @jenjis556 Ya never know!! Since you're pursuing it, it must be your calling....I wish you all the best. What instrument do you play?

  • @dggd Yeah I play drums¨, and little guitar :) thank for the moral support! :)

  • I can't tell, is that Lin Biviano on lead trumpet?

  • Yep

  • Drumming is very tight...I agree. Butch is one of the very best! Also....just look at him. Is there anyone else having more fun the he is up there? He's always smiling!

  • @dacrocker: That's called a shiteating grin! XD

  • The Count Basie Orchestra is Amazing! The Drumming is so tight, it's amazingly difficult. THe part itself isn't hard, but playing it THAT tight is crazy! Freddie Green(Guitar) amazing especially at this age! God, I wish we still had bands like this!

  • See Clayton-Hamilton Big Band! It plays in the Basie style and even has one of Baise's trumpet players from the 60s; Snooky Young!

  • we do still have bands like this lol. You just have to know where to look. The Count Basie Orchestra is still going strong and putting out albums, and then there is Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis. And of course there are several other bands out there as well.

  • I love watching Butch-he looks like a man who was born to swing the Basie Band and his having the time of his life!

  • @impala327: Perhaps that's why he came back for a ten year stint from 1997-2007.

  • Big Band music doesn't get better than this. Butch Miles almost got a stroke at 3:30....Amazing Big Band drummer

  • Basie is my God - has been since I first saw him at the Festival Hall in London - nin 1958. Is there any other way to play a guitar???

  • Omg I pretty much just came in my pants at 5:30

  • God I can't stop listening to this song i love the shout chorus it's like my favorite part who was the lead trumpet player?

  • This is terrific stuff! Montreaux 77 was the first Basie LP given to me by my grandfather when I began to show interest as a boy. I was hooked!

If quarter notes were dollar bills....Freddie green could have covered the national debt!

  • 3:30. holy shit. it doesnt get much better than that

  • This is from Montreux 77? Awesome! I never knew there was video of this. Thanks for sharing.

  • Pecosa!!!! hermosa tema y arreglo, Sammy Nestico!!!!!!!!!

  • I played this my first year of ever playing jazz in my life and it pretty much blew my mind. Nice mellow beat, yet witty at the same time. magnificentbertram is right about this being a good intro to jazz

  • Doesn't sound like Basie with an amp on the bass...pull harder! hahaha great vid

  • This may be true with gut strings, but if you're using steel, you are actually better off using a pickup.

  • this day in age, maybe...but you gotta respect the no amp sound for authenticity

  • @Jaketrombone Actually, amplifying the bass goes way back since Ampeg introduced its "Amplified Peg". Since then, there has been a plethora of pickup designs mostly to enhance the natural sound of the upright.

  • oh very nice!

  • Listen to this folks.. Count Basies lead words were "Four heavy beats to the bar- and no messing." This song clearly shows just that, with Freddie Green´s awesome guitar completeing Basies distinctive piano. Great stuff !

  • This is why I love youtube.

  • Lin Biviano sounds fantastic. Great style and interpretation most of the "youtube cuts" have not been the best. 5:41 lead player kiss off was the only thing I didn't like. WELL DONE! MORE OF THAT KIND OF PLAYING!!!

  • How can you not like that kiss off??!

You must not be a trumpet player...

  • what a solid barry

  • Any one new to jazz should watch /listen to this. Would be a stellar introduction

  • Fabulous!!!

  • Nice piece of music:)

    Crazy lead-player!!

  • I'm playing lead alto on this right now... I can never hope to match their style.

  • I remember playing this arrangement in college - we were all Basie heads - and thank God I got to see him before he left us. I actually wore out this record playing drums to these great tunes. Thankfully I also have the CD. Is there a DVD?

  • Sure is A DVD It's Great!

  • Great Ensenble!!!

  • And then there's Butch Miles with that S***-eating grin of his. Fantastic Rythm Section!

  • haha! man the last two times i saw basie that's what he must have been doing because they had other drummers sit in. Not even close to butch, pretty much a bummer.

  • fuckin freddy green....hes the best!

  • @selmerman80

yes i agree man but the funny thing was that he never took a solo in his entire life.

  • @selmerman80

hey and i see your a fan of selmer, waht type of sax do you have?

  • @freshhhbihhh142536 I play on a new Selmer Reference 54 alto

  • @selmerman80

Nice, i use to have one of those. Im lucky enough to have found myself a Selmer Mark VI in very good condition, what do you think of these saxes?

  • Das fetzt besser den je. Wäre gerne dabei gewesen.

  • The infinitively swinging drive of Basie's band is something that chills my blood, brings goosebumps to my skin and tears to my eyes.

  • laamboot!

  • Simply great. Can we get an agreement on the trumpet solo?

  • WOW!!wat a song!!!i love this!!!

  • This is one of my fevorite Basie songs to listen (and play). As usual, Basie and his longtime guitarist, Freddie Green were tight.

  • A must dvd this!

  • Great clip!..except i think it's Waymon Reed on trumpet cos that is what is says on the album.also similar another cut of the same track which is def Waymon...I may be wrong!!

  • The soloist is definately Bobby Mitchell. Waymon is on the other end of the trumpet section... next to Biviano. Waymon solos on Night In Tunisia.

  • Ok..I stand corrected!!

  • @brian740

I wish I knew all those names I am so musicaly uneducated... :(

  • @finchtrump When you say "album" - do you mean LP or CD? Please let me have the number of either. This is the best version of Freckle face. Basie's live performances were phenominal - no conducting no re-take, each musician feeling for each other. When possible I used to go to the first and second concerts of the evening - and each performance had that little human variation - but always precise.
