....actually, quite informative and entertaining video. Just in case you play trumpet or another brass instrument, I think you might find some trumpet and brass tutorials quite intriguing over at YOURBRASSINSTRUCTOR's Channel.
Thank the lord for YOU TUBE ; i CAN ENJOY ALL THE BASIE ARRANGEMENTS AND CONCERTS for the rest of my life. I WISH THIS WAS AVAILABLE THIRTY YEARS AGO AS I AM NOW 82. Now the rest of my life will be wonderful BIG SYD.
Geez...I can't imagine how the Count managed the touring logistics w/such a big band--it must've cost a fortune moving those guys around, then you got hotels, meals, etc., etc., not to mention salaries! Like I said, it must've cost a fortune.
Jazz enthusiasts should pay special attention to the Montreux recordings. I heard Ray Brown's LA four in Ronnie Scotts and then a few days later I heard them at Montreux. It was like night and day. The reason - the Swiss TV had superior recording facilities and TV. There could be no fooling around. Ray Brown even broke a string - i have never known a bass string to be replaced so fast.
@alexkoh7 were you actually at Montreux? That would be incredible - so was I there in 1977 - but couldn't get a ticket to the Basie Concert. My great compensation was that I bumped into Ray Brown beween concerts - and have a photo with him. My japanese friend first time in Europe, crazy about jazz and plays bass(but I did'nt know it then) took the photo. I screwed up the photo with him and Ray. I am now his lifelong slave!!
Where would they be without Freddie Green (rhythm guitar ) to hold it all together eh? That simple but vital thread that links the whole piece together.
@dggd In september i come in NY for 4 months and maybe more .. i hope to play jazz music in jazz club... or in big band jazz.. i hope god.. i am born for this..
Drumming is very tight...I agree. Butch is one of the very best! Also....just look at him. Is there anyone else having more fun the he is up there? He's always smiling!
The Count Basie Orchestra is Amazing! The Drumming is so tight, it's amazingly difficult. THe part itself isn't hard, but playing it THAT tight is crazy! Freddie Green(Guitar) amazing especially at this age! God, I wish we still had bands like this!
we do still have bands like this lol. You just have to know where to look. The Count Basie Orchestra is still going strong and putting out albums, and then there is Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis. And of course there are several other bands out there as well.
I played this my first year of ever playing jazz in my life and it pretty much blew my mind. Nice mellow beat, yet witty at the same time. magnificentbertram is right about this being a good intro to jazz
@Jaketrombone Actually, amplifying the bass goes way back since Ampeg introduced its "Amplified Peg". Since then, there has been a plethora of pickup designs mostly to enhance the natural sound of the upright.
Listen to this folks.. Count Basies lead words were "Four heavy beats to the bar- and no messing." This song clearly shows just that, with Freddie Green´s awesome guitar completeing Basies distinctive piano. Great stuff !
Lin Biviano sounds fantastic. Great style and interpretation most of the "youtube cuts" have not been the best. 5:41 lead player kiss off was the only thing I didn't like. WELL DONE! MORE OF THAT KIND OF PLAYING!!!
I remember playing this arrangement in college - we were all Basie heads - and thank God I got to see him before he left us. I actually wore out this record playing drums to these great tunes. Thankfully I also have the CD. Is there a DVD?
haha! man the last two times i saw basie that's what he must have been doing because they had other drummers sit in. Not even close to butch, pretty much a bummer.
Great clip!..except i think it's Waymon Reed on trumpet cos that is what is says on the album.also similar another cut of the same track which is def Waymon...I may be wrong!!
@finchtrump When you say "album" - do you mean LP or CD? Please let me have the number of either. This is the best version of Freckle face. Basie's live performances were phenominal - no conducting no re-take, each musician feeling for each other. When possible I used to go to the first and second concerts of the evening - and each performance had that little human variation - but always precise.

Doesn't sound like Basie with an amp on the bass...pull harder! hahaha great vid
Jaketrombone 2 years ago
This may be true with gut strings, but if you're using steel, you are actually better off using a pickup.
BassmanII 2 years ago
this day in age, maybe...but you gotta respect the no amp sound for authenticity
