Woe.....well ya know Rhode Island isn't the Biggest state so maybe not enough people came??? hmm...But I also heard they demolished it...and saw a pic of them demolishing it.
This is the Rocky Point theme song from the 1980s TV commercials as covered by the local Providence band Neutral Nation. They appear in You Must Be This Tall, and our director Dave Bettencourt went on to make a movie about Neutral Nation as well called "It's a Bash".
man this was my childhood in the 80's i moved away in 1987 to illnois and now rocky point is gone so meny fond memories of that place make me so sad that it is now gone would have liked to show my daughter where i spent my time as a lil girl it is just so sad
I believe it was a horse racing game - you would roll balls and if they went into the SLOW hole the horse moved slowly and if you got it into FAST it moved fast. It was the only real game remenant left when we were shooting. It was on the right side of the midway about 1/2 way between the house of horrors and the penny arcade if I remember right.
I grew up in the 1960's. We use to go there in the late 1960's.
This video is depressing. I remember riding the haunted castle and keep my eyes closed the whole dam ride. I was so scared. I also remember the Jungle ride across from the castle. Great place. I miss that America. Very sad.
it's true that toward the end, RP was a mess, but that wasn't always the case, it if it were still open today, whether or not it would still be "the shit" as you say, would depend on how well or poorly it would be managed. The question will always be, did RP fall apart due to declining attendance, or did attendance decline because it was becoming a dump. We'll never know, but I personally wish I had a place like RP to take my family
I was a child in the 70s, a teenager in the 80s...the last generation to be able to enjoy the life our parents had.
It was open for something like 155 years. The Historical Society couldn't do anything, even if just making it a park/museum? Please no condos. What a waste. The most stark photograph for me is the cable wheel on the skyliner(chair lift)I remember this wheel when I first rode it in'75 with my mother. It all seems surreal now, because as a kid, you could never see that park going away.
Can never begin to express how many memories will die with that park. It was THE place to be. Had a quality about it that can never be reproduced again. My father passed away this year and I remember him bringing us there every summer. Now I can never have that with my kids. It's sad really. Great Great times.
I MISS THAT PARK:( i loved the free fall. and i was so sacred or the sky diver!!! LOL i almost fell out of it when i was little. The last time i was at Rocky Point was 1994 I think or 1995. So sad to see it go its a shame. The clam cakes and chodwer were so good!
wow what a great video, how did you get into the park to film this! is there anything standing today on the properity and can we drive through the old rocky point avenue? please anyone know! thanks a million
Wow I can remember my few visits there as a kid from CT and my family would visit there during the summers and from today I have a picture of me taken in 1970 at ten years old in the photo booth at RP even in black in white it remains part of my past child life and was in moms wallet till recently. My favorite ride during my last visit in the 1970"s was that haunted house when you rode through the cart on tracks and also the park train being a rail road buff.
Ah yes my now deceased step dad worked at Pfizers and that had to be in the early 1970"s and then like 12 during that visit when there at Rocky Point and we eat in that large dining hall and the best part that I remember was riding all the rides for free all day and eating on Pfizers tickets. Great times for sure.
The place was going downhill for ages. The rides were so old it was a matter of time. For me I wish the horror house could have been saved. i was fascinated by it. I wish somone videotaped the inside of the ride when it was in action.
Was that the one with the cart when you rode through it on tracks and the cart banging through doors into the next horror scene as it did not scare me but it was one of my favorites to. I would like to see a vid of it to.
The people of Rhode Island should have done everything in their power to keep Rocky Point open. Mobbed up management/ownership helped it's demise. I guess money was more important than humanity. The people of Rhode Island should have done more. It's too late now!!!
Lincoln, Whalom, Paragon, Lakeview, parks as well as zoos, thearters, bowling alleys, I went to, the old Shopper's World .... and so the list goes on...all gone.
did you go to Lincoln Park too by any chance? Isn't it sad that these little family-owned parks are a thing of the past - now all we have are those huge rip-off chain amusement parks that cost a king's ransom just to park.
I loved Rocky Point :( I am a little dizzy because the video went so fast, but there are so many amusement parks in New England that are gone and I wish they weren't. Rocky Point, Kings Castle Land, Whalom Park, Paragon Park, and Benson's Animal Farm...those are from MY childhood.
does anyone remember all of the EB outings there with the family?
i remember being there as a kid and bringing my kids there for the outings. too bad it won't be there for my grandson, six flags is just too big for little ones.
i also remember when my brother went one time he was waiting in line for the flume, and the platform let go and everyone including my bro fell with the platform, a lot of people got hurt that day. i agree with wkndsquire, the insurance etc put it under-too bad.
I have plenty of stuff from Rocky Point. My Dad worked there. Infact, almost all the stuff you saw in this video is now burned/torn down. :( Well, I'll be happy to send you a few things!
I remember going there as a boy and riding a wood coaster it was in the early 70's. Does anyone know what this ride was called and have any pictures that they could share with me? Thanks all!
You can thank Six Flags for this. I only only remember snippits of Rocky Point back from 93 (when I was only 4 years old). Last year (probably not too long before this was taken) I reentered to see the rements. All I can say is nothing looked familiar. Long Live Rocky Point in Our Hearts and Soul.
Actually, you can blame insurance companies, land taxes and piss-poor management. To have been able to keep a park of this size open, the admission prices would have gone so high, it'd be pointless. But I still miss it greatly. You wouldn't believe how many pics I have.
Actually, Six Flags had nothing to do with RP's demise. The closing can easily be attributed to mismanagement and high liability insurance. Even if the park had been properly managed, the insurance rates for such a park make it nearly impossible to keep a place like this running. The admission to compensate would have been outragious.
so very sad to see rocky point this way. my family spent many hot summer days here, first eating at the shore dinner hall: chowda, clam cakes & water melon to top it off, then to the rides, and last my favorite: the flume to get you all drenched and then begging my parents to do it all over again, but it was time to pack up, walk down by the water, get in that old station wagon, drive home and await our next trip to ROCKY POINT. seeing this just brings tears to my eyes......
Yeah I know what you mean. It's the total antithesis of what an amusement park is while it's in operation. I have old pictures of Crescent Park after it closed...pretty depressing.
*sniffles* Very sad. I lived in the area for a couple of years too, and when I left in 92 it was one of the things I really missed. That and being so close to the shore.
Oh my, I wish I could have checked out Rocky Point in this state, thanks for posting this video. I can't believe some of the haunted house cars are still there.
I think that music drove everyone away.

Any one remember the remote controlled
boats in the pool right under the SKYLINER?
you had a big ol' wheel you could turn just like a real boat. you could back up in the
