love this band...can't say i love this version, i thinks its too far away from the original, at least when jimi covered it he kept the same vocal melody line as bob's...love the violin solo, insane!!!
hendrix and dylan are both in a realm of their own. DMB did a great job on the cover, but like ichbingott said, I doubt they were trying to top anyone by covering this. And yes, if it wasn't for bands covering, some greats would be lost. Example: Cream (crossroads) reminded a whole generation who Robert Johnson was.
90% of musicians don't do covers to try to top the original; they do it to keep that song and the original writers in memory.
Had it not been for covers like this, people under 25 wouldn't know who any decent musicians are. Someone would say "OMG; i just love Janis Joplin!" People would respond with "Did she do backup with Beyonce?"
